RE: WBB: Stanford vs. ASU 3pm Sunday - BostonCard - 01-03-2021

Lack of calls against ASU winds up hurting them as they have to foul intentionally without sending us to the line, chewing up a few extra seconds.

The game is going wind up being unnecessary close, but in the end, it is good we wound up going up double digits heading into the fourth.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. ASU 3pm Sunday - martyup - 01-03-2021

Stanford closes out ASU 68-60. Belibi was solid with 23 points and 12 rebounds. ASU had 23 free throws to Stanford's 8 (6 of which were at the end when ASU had to foul). Williams with 16 points. Our 3 PT shooting was poor at 21%, but overall we were 49%. We held ASU to 33% shooting. Another solid win by the #1 Cardinal WBB team. ALL RIGHT NOW!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. ASU 3pm Sunday - BostonCard - 01-03-2021

Was there a point to fouling with less than a second left and a six point deficit, other than pad the final score to 8?

Thank goodness for Fran, who came up very big in a game where Jones was in foul trouble, Brink was out, Williams was 1/9 from three and cold much of the first half, Lexie struggled offensively, and Wilson unexpectedly sat out for large swaths of the game (also, she was completely silent on offense, not even attempting a shot).

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. ASU 3pm Sunday - TheFarm07 - 01-03-2021

We end up winning 68-60 in a much closer margin of victory and game than I had expected and hoped for after starting off the game so well. We shot well collectively at around 50%, but atrociously from long range at only 4/19 (21%). Also, ASU snagged 13 offensive rebounds and we turned the ball over 17 times. The foul disparity was atrocious (20 to 12 and 5 of ASU's fouls came late when they were trying to extended the game) and 23 FT opportunities to just 8 for us.

We missed Brink's ability to shot block as ASU drove to the basket to get some easy layups during their runs.

Belibi was the star contributor on the offense scoring 23 pts (10/14 shooting) and grabbing 12 rebounds. Kiana was the only double digit scoring with 16 (she was on from inside the arc at 6/10, but frigid cold at 1/9 from downtown). Haley only took 5 shots all game long, as she picked up early fouls and had to sit for most of the first half and play more cautiously down the stretch. Lexie was 2/11, Prechtel was 3/4 in her limited time.

This game really shows that we cannot rest on our laurels; ASU is a scrappy team and we did not put them away as we should have.

Do they have +/- stats for women's college games?
I'd be interested in seeing those numbers.

I saw Brink's injury in the Zona game and IMHO it was completely unnecessary.  Looked like either high ankle or knee in the middle of a loose ball foul.  We were up 22 or 24, dominating defensively with just under 5 min left and there was absolutely no need to have our top rotation players still out on the floor.  That's Jerome time, not Brink or Jones.  This one's on staff, IMHO.

RE: WBB: Stanford 68 ASU 60 - Lorcan - 01-03-2021

I’m not sure you can blame the staff on that one. As a coach, I’d want to get Brink, a freshman, as many minutes as possible especially given that she’s prone to foul trouble. Extended minutes gives her more time to adjust to the college game and stop fouling in the important moments. Injuries happen, whether it’s to Brink or Brown, it’s jarring to see you blame “the staff” for the injury.

Typical unfortunately for this game. We've had 19 fouls called against us compared to their 9 and we've just had 2 FT opportunities compared to their 21.

Rough game but we won.  Started off strong and then completely took the foot off the gas pedal.  The free throw disparity is so hard to understand as Fran is getting hacked all game long on the inside and yet the refs swallow their whistle.  And ASU just has to dribble towards the hoop and they get rewarded with free throws.

The Good:  Belibi showed she can put the team on her back and win a game.  Williams manufacturing points when the team really needed her.

The Bad:  So many turnovers.  And many of them were seemingly unforced.  Passes out of reach of the receiving player, traveling, palming the ball.  And rough rough three point shooting.  Lexie and Williams go 2 for 14 from the 3 point line

Also shows the importance of Brink who coming into this game was our second leading scorer.

RE: WBB: Stanford 68 ASU 60 - 81alum - 01-03-2021

Well, CTT always seems to find a way, even with much less talent, to screw up our offense.  What surprised me was that her offense seems improved over a year ago.  Hanson is the real deal, and their freshman Simmons racked up 16 clutch points.  Those two made the game uncomfortably close for much of the last three quarters.

After a quarter it looked like we would be dominant, but we let that domination slip away.  Why?  We shot only 4/19 from three point range--which is not unexpected against ASU.  Tara always says that your best opportunity to score against ASU is with layups since they guard so closely.  But we had a whopping 17 turnovers--cut those in half and this would have been a blowout.  Offensive rebounds were tied 13-13.  And of course ASU has Missy playing for them, so ASU got 17 points out of their free throws while we only had 6.

Williams stepped up in the second half and scored 16.  I am beginning to dread life after Williams and Wilson graduate.  But Lexi was 2/11.

Fran had a career high with 23 points and 12 rebounds, but she also had 5 turnovers.

The questions that remain:

1. How badly was Brink banged up?  Will she really be back next game, and if so, at full health?

2. Where we we be playing our home games?  I suggest UC Santa Cruz--in Jones's back yard.

3. Can we get Lexi back as a reliable scorer?  She did expend enormous energy trying to hold Hanson in check, but we need that balanced offense with multiple players in double digits.

4. What do we need to do to get our turnovers in check?

I believe that Stanford won without making a single 3 pointer in the 2nd half. It's got to be tough shooting in a different gym every game and nearly every practice.

Kiana Williams' shots make a ripping noise when they go through the net that you don't hear from other players. I would love to hear more of it from her 3 point shots.

RE: WBB: Stanford 68 ASU 60 - Hulk01 - 01-03-2021

Ducks lost to UCLA.  UCLA lead 90% of the game, Ducks came back hard in the middle of the fourth to make it close.

I think they should play Jump more.  Isolate and feed her...she can ignite things.

We will have to agree to disagree.  IMHO using the same logic it's just as important to get Prechtel more minutes to get her game going again.  And we all know play tends to get sloppy during garbage time.

It's pretty obvious to me that Brink, like Jones, is one of those cornerstone players we need to protect under those kinds of circumstances.

Leaving your top players in with under 5 min to go in a rout is, I daresay, a Geno move.

Hopefully her injury is not too bad. We have 5 days until the Oregon game on Friday evening. Even with the loss of the Big 3 for the Ducks, the freshman class is already contributing and complimenting Bolley and the younger Sabally nicely. I think today's game really underscores how much Brink has added just a few games into her collegiate career. She is confident and fearless (though that can be an Achilles heel, I shudder to think how quickly she might have fouled out of this game with the poor officiating) and can be that extra spark off the offense and give the opponent another player to worry about.

What's frustrating for me with the turnovers is that a lot of them are unforced. It's not some swarming defense or defenders being ultra quick and cutting off passing lines for the pick, but forcing the ball into teammates who have 2 defenders on them or throwing a pass at 100 mph. The players are talented enough to not have to make the low percentage passes to manufacture offense.

Interestingly,  Oregon outscored UCLA in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters by 1 point each and lost by 1.

I'm with you, Q, in principle.  And I'm certainly with you in willingness to criticize coaching moves, which seems like a misdemeanor (at least) in these parts - which I really don't understand.  There is nothing inconsistent about acknowledging that Tara is a great coach whom Stanford is lucky to have AND that she makes mistakes from time to time (I happen to think her handling of Prechtel is one . . . but maybe it's all part of the plan . . . which I hope is not the case).

But in defense of the staff on late-game substitutions, it is not clear cut when is the right time to bring in subs - or in what order.  A full line shift like hockey can be pretty disruptive to getting anything going; moreover (and I can say these even from coaching at WAY lower levels), coaches always have a "worst case scenario" in mind before they allow the bench to clear.  That's probably good, even if it means the benches clear a tad later than is likely comfortable to do so.  Up 25 with 5 minutes left is often insurmountable.  But with a good opponent, I can see the hesitancy.  Up 30 with 3 minutes left?  Well, that's more comfortable.  And I do agree that getting Brink minutes is good - if only to build up stamina - as she clearly is a key player on the squad.

Longwinded way of saying while I agree with you in principle, am less certain about the specifics of blaming the staff for the Brink injury.  It was not like she was in when we were up 20 with 30 seconds left.

RE: WBB: Stanford 68 ASU 60 - jonnyss - 01-03-2021

imo it's likely harder to get your substitutions correct when 2 of the 4 coaches are missing

Seriously, the end of Q1 was a joke (and not a funny one).  The team just commits 4 turnovers (none by Prechtel); and then on ASU's last possession, Kiana makes a foolish reach in foul with a few seconds left.  All of those transgressions have no repercussions.  It's only when Prechtel is called for a foul - which was a very dubious call - with .4 seconds left that Tara feels compelled to go to the bench and sub in Belibi for Prechtel's mistake (which, btw, was not a foul).

But even if it were, c'mon . . .

For some reason, Prechtel is in Tara's 'house.

P.S.  Belibi looks great out there.

Noticed that no one here commented on the above - no surprise, really.
But I post the below just so you all know that I'm not the only one who is seeing things a certain way.
The official reporter on the Rivals site had this today, among other things, after today's ASU game:

"Ashten Prechtel will get an opportunity to take on more minutes in Brink's absence but it's my opinion that her relationship with VanDerveer is out of sync right now.  I think Prechtel is playing with one eye on VanDerveer, waiting to be taken out after a mistake.  I may not be an FBI profiler but my scouting report of Prechtel's body language is that she is not confident and it's hard for her to find a rhythm right now."

That's a delicate (and non-coach-focused) way to phrase it . . .

RE: WBB: Stanford 68 ASU 60 - martyup - 01-03-2021

I'm sure Tara has good reasons for her decisions.  Most great coaches do.
