Danna is a play-by-play guy. I agree 100% he should be more like Ted Robinson

Walton is a color guy. He should be less about stuff that isn't relevant to the game. He has a vast knowledge of basketball. He should try to impart more of that and less of the other schlock he peddles

I am guessing that Walton has forgotten quite a bit of his "vast knowledge", you know with him regularly taking 'shrooms and all.

From what I've heard, shrooms wouldn't affect his vast knowledge of basketball, but it would be in brighter colors.

I've mentioned this before, but since we've gone on and on and on about Bill Walton (sound familiar?), I will again say that I asked a colleague (who went on to become rich by selling a major product) what was the best thing he had gotten out of his wealth.  He said it was that he'd gotten to become friends with Bill Walton, who was truly a great guy.

But, being a great guy doesn't mean he isn't annoying to many of us.

My uncle's regular golf partner (at least pre-pandemic) is Skip Bayless, who, in real life is also a good guy.  Which doesn't stop him from playing a blowhard on TV.

Skip Bayless brother - Rick Bayless of Frontera Grill fame, is also a really good guy. And he's one hell of a chef. When I lived in Chicago in the 90s we ate there before going to Bulls games. Rick always had a table for us.

I have literally stopped watching games because Walton was on the scene.

This. I just can't. He's like that entitled uncle who has to insinuate himself into every conversation and thinks every half formed thought that comes out of his mouth is genius. I've basically stopped watch Pac-12 games because he's so insufferable.

Um, you can watch with the sound off.....

I often turn off the TV commentary and listen to Kevin Dana.  He uses an old fashioned radio announcing personality--where you have to inject enthusiasm into your voice to give a blind game a sense of life.  What I like about his announcing is not the excessive dramatic interpretation he uses, though, but the fact that he actually calls the game.  He knows who every player is and describes the action completely.  He is a better radio than TV announcer for this reason.  A few of you might remember the days when some games were only available on radio!  His pregame interviews with Tara often elicit meaningful information.

In contrast, the 2 ESPN announcers when Tara broke her record did not know who all the players were and spent many minutes talking about things other than the action on the court.  Some of that was justified given Tara's accomplishment, but they just let the teams run up and down the court while they held their Tara praise chat--at times the game was merely a backdrop.

Blount and Murphy are my favorite TV announcers since they also call the game and teach a bit more about how to appreciate it with each broadcast.  Murphy has always seemed close to Tara and sometimes a bit pro-Stanford, but in the Oregon game she went the other way a bit.

Walton I can take or leave.  I do get tired of him after one game, but if I only had to listen to him once a year he wouldn't be too bad.  Blowhards are just that way.

You are right about muting announcers you don’t like, but there is a downside to lack of audio.  In regular years you miss the noise of the crowd, and even without a crowd, it is hard to watch a basketball game in silence.

I turn Walton down to where I can hear sound but can't tell what he's saying. In regular years that gets me enough crowd noise to make it feel real.
