I will say the plan to sign pretty much a full starting-11 defense in 2022 is one I agree with and wish we more or less did every year (with some flexibility for BPA). Pipelines need to be more stable and consistent than signing 4 DL in a class then signing just 1 for 3 straight afterwards, or signing zero linebackers total in a class which should NEVER happen.

I completely agree.  I like to use two-year cycles just because there is always some movement between classes due to redshirts and attrition, but the point is very well taken.  There is no reason that we cannot anticipate problem areas three years out.  In order to ensure depth and stability, we need to recruit approximately an entire starting 22 (plus one special teams player) every year.  You allow a little bit of flexibility for a bumper crop at a single position, but we shouldn't, under any circumstances, sign zero players at a position group in a given year.  That should simply not happen.

This is why I am a bit more bullish on the class of 2022 than you might expect given the star ratings of a lot of the players.  What we might be losing in headline players, we are gaining in terms of depth across position groups.  FINALLY!

I’d feel better about the 2021 DB situation if Stanford had landed Trent McDuffie. I read about Ayden Hector here, but haven’t read McDuffie’s name on this forum in a while even though he’s been tearing it up for UW and is considered a top 50 draft pick in 2022.

Neither of those are guys we "missed" on.  So to feel better, you would have to root for Washington, or a school like USC.
Cheers,

Farewell to Tobe Umerah, who never found his great potential actualized on the field at Stanford, and Tae Le, who was a walk-on, but a legit recruit who was offered scholarships at other schools.

Interested to hear any thoughts. And, as always, corrections welcome.

Tae Le had committed to Harvard, then decommitted and committed to Stanford.

Updated personnel tables with KSU depth-chart starters. I also designated other positional responsibilities (viz., returns, holder, kick-offs).

I did not designate a starter where "or" is listed between two players on the depth-chart.

Surprises for me included Damuni not starting at ILB, Herron over Reid at OLB, and Williams over Gilman at S. Not surprised with Bonner at CB.

I also listed the three injuries that we know of -- Wilson, McGill, STM.

Marked West as starter at QB.

Marked McKee as starter.

On the official depth chart, Kelly is denoted as NB. I assume that Manley comes in to play CB in those situations. If so, I'll mark him as NB.

Also, if any injuries are known outside of the three that are marked, please let me know.

Walk-On Union Watch. Three non-scholarship players got PT against the Wildcats. In addition...

RE: 2021 Stanford Football Personnel - Spiny_Norman - 09-07-2021

Did any true frosh play? I did not see any of them listed in the participation report from the box score.

RE: 2021 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 09-07-2021

Frosh Force. As Spiny noted, no true freshmen played against the Wildcats. That's the first time I recall that happening.

RE: 2021 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 09-09-2021

Bench Bunch. The following non-injured non-frosh scholarship players did not appear against the Wildcats.

RE: 2021 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 09-10-2021

M*A*S*H Unit. The following players did not appear against the Wildcats due to injury or COVID protocol.
All three of these guys are starters or key contributors. Wilson and STM were injured to end last season. Same injuries?

I wonder if Peat earned the starting RB position over Jones with his performance tonight.

Great question. I suspect not, although he will get more time. I guess I question his durability, but he really isn't smaller than Jones so I am not sure why it concerns me. Jones in the past was considered a better inside runner, I believe. That hasn't been in evidence this year yet. I am sure we will see a lot of  Peat and a bit of Filkins.

I hope we also see E.J. Smith as a receiver and as a runner as well. I don't know what his usage profile will be, but he is potentially a great YAC guy as I understand it. Problem is, we can't afford a guy in the backfield who everybody knows won't carry the ball. We need to establish that he can hurt you as a runner too. If that isn't going to work then he needs to be in the receiver room exclusively. Right now, speed at receiver isn't in large supply. Maybe he can help that???

We have a few on kickoff cover. I will confess I didn't watch the game, but based on who was out there for kickoff team against USC, there HAD to have been some true frosh in that package for K State.

RE: 2021 Stanford Football Personnel - BostonCard - 09-12-2021

Should you add Tucker Fisk to the defensive line as well?  He has two recorded tackles, and I don’t think they were special teams tackles.

I knew he was playing there. I guess I was not sure whether to designate people at two positions (e.g., guard and tackle, or RB and WR) when they play both, but rather designate the primary. But it is true that he plays two very different positions, and it is a significant contributor for both. Maybe designate it in parens, a la KR and H?
