Could be that, or it could be that a single elimination tournament has a big variance in it's outcomes. All year long on this board in in the press we have heard that it was a "down" year in the PAC-12. Lots of head shaking. Now, we are being told the PAC-12 must be pretty good relative to the rest pf the nation. Not sure I believe it. I think this year everybody is down, and there is a lot of really bad basketball being played in the land.

I certainly have seen a lot of bad basketball. It’s a crapshoot in the first several rounds. Generally by the time of the Final Four you have at least two of the nations top teams in it. But I don’t think there is much to glean over conference strengths from theses early rounds.

PAC 12 guaranteed one slot in final 8 as UCLA plays Oregon. Gonzaga and Baylor look to be the cream of the crop. Have been most if not all season. But they can have an off night or run into a team that shoots lights out. So, who knows.

This article has the probability of making each round by seed.

So, USC (6 seed) had a 30% chance of making the sweet 16
Oregon (7 seed) had a 19% chance of making the sweet 16
UCLA (11 seed) had a 15.7% chance of making the sweet 16
OSU (12 seed) had a 15% chance of making the sweet 16

Colorado (5 seed) had a 64% chance of making the second round.

I played golf with JB in Phoenix when my son was at Syracuse (class of '01). Seemed like an OK guy. Can't say the same about Montgomery in my experience, however, on or off the course. I just know that a big difference is that one guy's teams played better in March than other guy's.

Given what the guys before and after Monty have done at Stanford, maybe making it to the tournament represents a win for this program. Stanford has made the NCAA tournament 17 times in the history of the program (including the 1942 title before the NCAA tournament was a thing). Montgomery has 12 of those NCAA appearances in his 18 years at Stanford. In the 16 tournaments since Monty left to coach the Warriors, we've gone 4 times, three of those within four years of Montgomery's departure.

My son played basketball with John Montgomery. Unfortunately, I'd have to agree with you on his father.

Didn't want to start a new thread on the subject, and it is about a tourney team...

Shaka leaves Texas for Marquette. It is his home state, but it seems that the seat in Austin got too hot for his liking. He will be under less pressure now.

UCLA is in a thriller with Alabama. Bruins up in overtime by 7 with just 38 seconds to play.

They had to play into the tourney.

Oregon is now playing USC. Pac-12 is 11-1 in the tourney.

A good friend and her husband were very, very close to Boeheim, and she constantly reminded me I had it wrong about Jim. Didn't matter that he dumped his wife of nearly 20 years for a woman 20 years younger. . . .

My guess is that they will still have Oral Roberts ahead of all remaining P12 teams. They will be seeded 7th, 8th, and 9th and give ORU better odds of winning the championship despite their elimination.

3 wins against Sweet 16 teams and 2 wins against Elite 8 opponents?

It seems like some on this board bought into the conventional wisdom that all of the pac-12 teams were so terrible that coming in 6th in the conference must be horrendous, but 4 teams ahead of us were Sweet 16 teams

If I remember conferences correctly the Pac 12 has 3 teams in the Elite 8 and no other conference has more than one.

I didn't think the season was horrendous, although the last few games were pretty bad.
Just mediocre like the ones preceeding it have been.
Like previous seasons we did play well at times, as the wins over teams that have gone deep in the tourney demonstrate.

Realistically, the teams in the Elite 8 (except Gonzaga) don't appear to be in the same class as previous years E8, at least from the "eye test".
This year simply was a "down year" period, mostly because of COVID but also for reasons unknown. I think it is difficult to evaluate the "real" quality of any of these teams based on WL record. OSU has come from nowhere, but really UCLA has too. Are they good, or is everyone not so good? I pick the later.

Teams get hot. And it’s one and done. UCLA has also had good fortune. MSU wasn’t very good. Then the forfeit, then a lower seed. Played well last night. They get Michigan with their best player hurt.

Despite all the craziness. The FF still may have 3 one seeds and one two seed. Cream rises to top.
