RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 03-12-2023

Baird, Kipp, Oglivie, and Miner invited to Anaheim to train with USA National Team March 12 (today) through March 18.  I guess that puts a dent in Stanford's spring practices this week.

https://usavolleyball.org/story/eighteen-college-athletes-spring-training-in-anaheim/

"After training for the week, the group will scrimmage on March 18."  I'm going to see if I can go to that.  Only about 15 minutes from where I live.

Will Stanford have any spring exhibition matches in April?  Most teams are having at least one formal exhibition game.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - johnbar - 03-12-2023

Has Hambly ever had public spring exhibitions?
He (understandably) didn't have them during the covid era, but I don't recall if he did them before.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 03-12-2023

I was going to post the same John. I don’t think since Dunning

I plan to be there.  Four Stanford players: Miner, Kipp, Baird, and Oglivie.  At 32 seconds into the video I like the authoritative tip by Baird against a big double block as opposed to her high arcing tips of last season.

I went to the USA National Team college players scrimmage in Anaheim this morning.

Miner: The three setters were Kami, Shaffmaster from Minnesota, and Podraza from Penn State.  Shaffmaster was slightly better at set location.  Miner was the quickest to the ball.  Miner also was the most enthusiastic and vocal of the three setters.

Kipp: Kendall had the most kills from the back row.  A player's parent told me USAV measured her approach touch this week at 10'11".

Oglivie:  Oglivie showed the same consistency in passing and digging as she did during the past season.

Baird:  Katie received the most serves of any player and held up fairly well.  She had a couple of shanked balls but otherwise passed well.   Her tips were aggressive of the "push-down" type rather than high looping tips.   After seeing Baird today IMO none of the incoming freshmen are going to displace her from the starting lineup at Stanford.

Thanks for your thoughts softball fan
Looks like we open 2023 at Northern Colorado and play Kentucky with another or two

Per poster on volleytalk Kipp was best player on floor by a mile. Had same thoughts about Baird as softballfan

I want to play as tough a non-conference schedule as possible to jack up the RPI.  I expect the PAC-12 to be weaker than last year.  Kentucky will be good so that helps.

Someone posted on a Penn State WVB message board that the PAC-12/Big 10 Challenge is going with four new teams this year so no Stanford.  That's a bummer.  I expect Penn State to win the B1G conference this year.  They would have helped make the Cardinal better and would have looked good on Stanford's resume.

As I understand it, all Gatorade State Players of the Year can choose an organization for a $1,000 grant if they want to fill out an application and explain their reasons for choosing that organization.  Jordyn Harvey (OH, 2023 recruit) chose League One Volleyball, a developing professional volleyball league in the USA.

Actually I just like the picture of how high off the floor she is and the definition in her arm muscles.  She clearly spends time in the weight room.  Hope that motivation and work ethic rubs off on her future teammates. Would appreciate a mod putting the twitter feed in a format to show the picture here which I don't know how to do.

https://usavolleyball.org/story/twenty-talented-u19-players-on-roster-for-girls-pan-am-cup/

Twenty players chosen for USA U19 training team for Pan American Cup.  Twelve players will be selected second week of May in Anaheim for the final roster.  Players of interest are:

Julia Blyashov (2023 commit, OH):  Most likely will make the team as she made the U18 USA team for last years World Championship.

Lizzy Andrew (2024, MB, 6'5"): rumored very likely to commit to Stanford if admitted.  I hope she makes the team.

Taylor Harvey (2024, MB, 6'3"):  Jordyn's younger sister.  I don't know if she's interested in Stanford or if she's on the same academic path as her older sister.   Anyone have any info about her?

Taylor Yu (2024, setter): rumored to be interested in Stanford beach. I don't know if she's being recruited by Hambly for indoor.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 04-04-2023

I believe Yu is an indoor commit.
Stanford coaches recently saw A darn can’t recall her name right in Florida. 6-6 MB 2025

Alevok is the MBer

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 04-09-2023

Thanks for the video BACardinal.  I'm getting pumped up for volleyball.  Does the WVB season start soon?

Stanford had four participants at this USAV National team training camp for college players; Kipp, Baird, Miner, and Oglivie.   The person taking the video would have gotten a better result having the camera in a fixed position.

Thanks BobK for Alevok name.  Hazel Alevok (6'6" MB/Opp 2025).  She is what you would expect a 15 year old 6'6" kid to be.  Slow on her feet, slow reactions, and about a 10" vertical jump.  However the ceiling is very high.  Will she grow into her body, acquire quicker eye/hand coordination, improve strength?  Time will tell.

One thing for sure 6'6" will be widely recruited.  Do you know what her interest is in Stanford?  She is Instagram following Alex Dunphy (good), Stanford WVB (good), and about twenty other college volleyball teams (not good).

Hazel was chosen to be a charter member for volleyball at the IMG Academy in Florida for her junior and senior years.  I take that to mean she is highly motivated to be the best possible VB player she can be.

Pretty easy to block 5'8" players when you are 6'6".

FWIW, Stanford is also recruiting Kelly Kinney, a 2025 OH who was chosen for that team.

I really disagree with your analysis of Hazel.  She is tall but also very skinny.  Still a bit of a baby giraffe but is very athletic all else being equal.  Has gotten a lot better in the last year.  She is really good right now but just oozes potential.....

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 04-09-2023

Thanks for the name Big John.  Kinney is twitter following most of Nebraska's players and many Big 10 teams.  I hope Hambly and staff can work recruiting magic on Kinney.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 04-09-2023

Kinney is following Dunphy on Instagram

In the past month I haven't seen a single picture of Sami Francis with her teammates on StanfordWVB twitter.  Is she injured?

Not sure it proves anything but she is in the 5th photo solo, and with teammates in the 7th:

Alex Lougeay was unavailable for most of last season.  I recall someone posted it was due to multiple concussions and she would probably medically retire.  Here is her birthday picture on Stanfordwvb twitter today.  Does anyone have an updated status on Lougeay.

New NCAA rules in Hambly's quest for recruits.  Hope he can get the 2025 prospects out to the farm this fall. I believe June is when coaches can first talk to 2025 players.

Hambly recruiting Kenna Cogill (2025 MB) along with about four other MBs for 2025.  Anyone have an opinion about Cogill.  From videos she doesn't look as athletic as other 2025 MBs being considered but videos aren't nearly as good as in person observation for making an evaluation.
