Per the above, Campbell and Macario are not on the official Team USA roster of Olympians. And this notes the specific difference we've been discussing--are they now Olympians or did FIFA/IOC simply make using an alternate easier? This seems to confirm it's the latter:

We haven't yet been told what that means for their eligibility for medals (and they'd be unlikely to walk in the Opening Ceremonies anyway, since they're in an outlying area), and whether they need to be on a 18-player matchday roster to become an Olympian, or whether they actually need to get on the field. As of right now, if Tierna Davidson never sets foot on the field, she gets a medal if the team wins one. But we haven't been told what Macario/Campbell need to do to earn a spot. 

Especially with Ertz limited, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Macario on most of the gameday rosters. (And another reason why I'm surprised Purce didn't make the roster--she can back up at outside back and at forward in case calamity strikes--a perfect 

This is also interesting against the backdrop of how other teams have announced their rosters. Many didn't announce until the change was made--some of those put out 18-player rosters with 4 alternates, while others put out 22-player rosters. But 4 of those 22 don't yet get the title of Olympian, apparently. 

From a competition perspective, it's the same thing--Macario is just as available as an option to Vlatko as Davidson is. But it sure seems like a miserly way to treat players in terms of the honor of being an Olympian.

The Olympics are a joke. The Japanese people don't want them. Their vaccine rollout is a joke too.

It's all about the pressure that NBC put on the IOC. NBC Sports is run by a bunch of jackals. Hope my friends on the crew are ok.

I'm only watching the shotput competition as a tribute. But it will probably air on some obscure channel.

FWIW, I am extremely confident we'll see the three outfield players on matchday rosters, and fairly confident that at least one of the alternates will see the field. Jane Campbell is nearly certain not to see the field, and #2 keeper Adrianna Franch is very unlikely to play, either. That's just the nature of backup keepers in a big tournament. But if just getting on a matchday roster is enough to get you Olympian status and to get you in line for a medal if the team wins one, then I bet Vlatko will have Jane Campbell back up Alyssa Naeher in the New Zealand match, where we're least likely to see dangerous forwards coming forward in our group matches.

A lot of that depends on how we do against Sweden in the first match, though. Collect all three points with a win, and Vlatko has more freedom to make substitutions and get the four alternates on the matchday roster for New Zealand. Fail to beat Sweden, and we have to have our absolute best 18 ready to go against New Zealand and Australia, and then obviously in the knockout stages. So, if you're starting against Sweden, you don't just have the hopes of the country on your shoulders--four of your teammates might not get medals if you don't secure that win. (I'm confident we'll see at least Macario and Lynn Williams on a matchday roster at some point no matter how we do against Sweden.)

Circling back on this, we finally have a soccer journalist addressing the issue we've been discussing, and he's reporting FIFA confirmed to him alternates only get medals (and presumably, the title of Olympian) if they appear on a 18-player matchday roster:

So, as always, beat Sweden and options start opening up for roster flexibility. Heck, the group could be won if we're on 6 points after the first two matches and we get some helpful results in the other matches. If Australia-New Zealand ends as a draw on the first day and the same happens for Sweden-Australia on the second day? We've already won the group even before the third match is played, so rostering decisions get easier at that point. 

And with Julie Ertz still working her way back to health, Vlatko might decide to give her a little bit more time to come back, instead putting Macario on the roster for the opener against Sweden. Anyway, we'll see soon enough! First match is tomorrow morning in the very wee hours....

Thanks for the update. I'm certain that each of the three outfield alternates will be in the 18 for at least one match, and likely will see the field too. It also seems likely that Vlatko will list Campbell as the backup GK for one of the group matches, one would think.
