That's one way of looking at it. However, every other P5 conference has their dogs in each of the Big 3 men's sports, and
Rice would not be coming into the Pac-12 by themselves, but rather, in all likelihood, with another 3 schools. Obviously, Rice would have to make a major financial commitment to improve facilities as part of any deal, and would also likely have to agree to a much smaller share of TV revenue in the near term.
Having said that, as the poster above mentioned, Rice does bring one of the best TV and recruiting markets in the country (Houston) and academically Rice is a perfect fit for the Pac-12, especially with it's latest decision to grow enrollment by 65% of the next 5 years. And while the recent performance in the Big 3 men's sports have been sub-par to the say the least, expectations are for football to finally be bowl-eligible this year (in Bloomgren's 4th year and with the recent transfer of QB Luke McCaffery from Nebraska) and basketball to post a 20-win season (with virtually the entire team returning, along with a couple impact transfers). And baseball is on the path back to national stature with the hiring of Jose Cruz jr as head coach, and with the infusion of 5 transfers already. Also, though clearly not revenue sports, Rice women sports ranked in the Top 26 in 5 sports (volleyball, soccer, basketball, indoor/outdoor track) and Top 35 in tennis.
I am not so sure I'd bank on Rice bringing in one of the best TV and recruiting markets in the country (Houston), it just happens to be located there. In Houston it is all about the University of Houston, Texas A&M, and Texas.
TCU and SMU would bring in the metroplex, and that is worth considering. Heck, even Baylor would bring in Waco, although I don't want that.

University of Houston does not have much stronger fan support than Rice, particularly for a school of it's size. It's largely a commuter school...and it's academics certainly don't fit the Pac-12 profile. TCU, SMU and Baylor are all religious-affiliated schools which goes against the Pac-12 charter.

No more 8pm kickoffs.
Nothing there I don't like. Too bad it'll never happen. It wasn't too long ago I was a college football fan and a Stanford football fanatic. Times change.

You really think Rice has a future as a football brand?

Quote:The other option, from the Pac-12's perspective, is to sit this one out entirely. The Big Ten, ACC and SEC would fight over the last remnants of the Big 12 and the Pac-12 could rest easy knowing there's one fewer power conference to compete with. That path of least resistance would seemingly make it easier for the Pac-12 to secure a top seed in the College Football Playoff, whatever its expansion winds up looking like.
I endorse this option.

Having been born and raised in Pennsylvania I recall Slippery Rock University consistently putting a good product on the football field. I checked their 2019 schedule. They convincingly beat Shippensburg and Millersville.
Slippery Rock is only a one hour drive from Pittsburg, a big TV audience. I suggest adding Slippery Rock to the PAC-12 schedule and bring in the East Coast fans.
My point: Schools should be added to the PAC-12 if they improve it; not dilute it.

While the rest of the P5 was sleeping, the SEC, which already had a brobdingnagian lead in all things football, seems to have pulled off an athletic Pearl Harbor.
There are rumors that the SEC will continue its assault by invading southeast Asia (poaching top football powers from other P5s). The other P5s will have largely been consigned to football irrelevance. The only hope of survival seems to be to join the trend to professionalize. As one of the top four or five universities of the world, I doubt Stanford will follow this path. Perhaps the majority of PAC schools will feel the same. This seems to be a moment when Stanford and the rest of the conference tmust think deeply about how far they will go and, even if they professionalize, can they keep up with an expanded SEC. If they choose not to professionalize, how will they structure themselves and operate in this radically different landscape. Pretty soon, if not already, we will not be in Kansas anymore.

One of my best memories as a kid sitting in the "Old Lady" (old Stanford Stadium) was when the stadium announcer Ed Macaulay gave the Slippery Rock Score, the fans would go bonkers when Slippery Rock won, Ed always gave the Slippery Rock last on purpose. Attached is an article on Ed Macaulay. He was an outstanding announcer.

Well duh. This is the only thing that makes any sense, which is why I thought of it yesterday.
We might see rapid involvement from Congress to stop the winner take all movements that seem to be afoot.

My bet is that ultimately there will be two power conferences, one with the current SEC as its anchor and one with the current Big-X as its anchor, with Stanford naturally part of the latter.

so maybe two conferences, say the American and National, each with four divisions, maybe the North, South, East, and West, each division with four teams. Playoffs with division winner and two wild card teams per conference. Championship could be the "College Super Bowl"....

I am sure the NFL will take it upon themselves to look for ways to profit off of this, maybe they will trade the Raiders for Bama and the Lions for the Buckeyes for starters followed by the Bengals for the southbenders and the Texans for the Aggies............

All things must pass including my interest in college football. Started in 1953. My interest in playing 18 hole golf courses. My interest in special effects because keyboards took over for opticals.
So let the Stillwaters, the Montgomerys, the Baton Rouges have their fun. Stanford should stick to their mission and play a version of D3 football with real students who have no interest in pro football. Turn the stadium into a launching pad for the Bezos crowd.

I would enjoy watching Stanford play against Slippery Rock, USF, St. Marys, Santa Clara and Mare Island (sp) to mention a few.

Fort Ord was loaded during the Korean War. My college coach played two years at St. Mary's, two at Ord and then four at SFSU. The NCAA didn't do much tracking on the Small College level. Back in that day Alameda NAS, Moffitt Field, Hamilton AFB and other California bases had teams.

If Stanford ever were to throw in the cards on being a football factory, I think a good place for them is the Ivy League. Transportation and cold weather would be issues, but you could get rid of athletic scholarships (give other forms of financial aid to students needing monetary help).
RE: More conference realignment? -

Folks, it doesn't have to be this bleak. Back in the 60s Stanford had some NFL destined talent and the world didn't end. They were pretty much just students. There is a way to have very high quality athletics without all the trimmings. It doesn't require 35 million a year from ESPN to have a football program. It won't be like it is today, but we don't have to blow the whole thing up or become the Ivy League.
It may very well be that in "today's world" it is impossible to tone down the expense and profile of college sports while retaining excellence. If that turns out to be the case, it is certainly due to a failure of imagination and leadership in the collegiate administrations. People need to learn to say no to more money in return for their soul. What we need here IS a restraint of trade and some good collusion to stop the madness.

Yeah, that's always worked so well. Not that I don't agree with you but none of that seems likely to happen before a complete breakdown.
