In 2019 he was in Brazil. Last year was his first in the program, which bolsters your point.

Exactly.  McKee's only season to date was the abbreviated Corona season (so six games).  In terms of eligibility, he is technically a redshirt freshman (and an academic sophomore).  That said, if he is good, we should use him sooner rather than later.  His Mormon cohort, Simi Fehoko, produced one good season for the Cardinal (2020), then split for the NFL after what was technically his redshirt sophomore season (in 2018, he only played four games and caught one pass for 6 yards, so he entered 2019 as a redshirt freshman).  The two-year Mormon mission makes it possible for athletes to leave earlier if they feel their draft stock is up simply because they are older.  If McKee is the real deal, play him now, because if he is the real deal, he will be gone after the 2022 season.  That's two seasons.  We got 3 1/2 seasons out of Hogan and 3 out of Luck.  Since those seasons (2009-2015), productivity from our highly-touted QBs has tanked (Burns/Chryst 2016, Chryst/Costello 2017, Costello 2018, Mills/Costello 2019, Mills 2020).  Some of this is beyond the coaching staff's control.  But the motto needs to be: play the best talents early and often.

This perhaps start like 2012 with Josh Nunes (West) gives way mid-season to Hogan.  Back in 2012, Shaw stated clearly that "Hogan wasn't ready at the first game of the season."  That is Shaw's call this week.  West does "know the offense" better.  With Shaw, the physical skills are PART of the package.  Mental acument, knowing the plays, making the reads is a BIG element.  Safe call:  start West, rely on the O-Line, use three RBs (Jones, Peat, EJ Smith).  K-State will cheat up -- they have aggressive Safeties.
So we throw it over the top, or the fade jump ball in the Red Zone.
Wilson is injured at WR, but Tremayne, Higgins, Humphries, Silas Starr are ALL 6'3"+ with moves.
The speedsters:  Farrell and Bowman have sub 11sec 100 yard speed, like Michael Recter.
I believe either West or McKee can get the ball out, because they will have time.

True, but West can't throw it that far and the opponent knows that. Hopefully, the medium stuff will open up if they put 9 in the box.

If anything, I think West starting this first game means that he won't finish the season as starter. Shaw has never had a QB competition where the winner of the competition aka game 1 starter ended up finishing the year as the starter.

I also think Keller's knee injury in the Sun Bowl affected him both mentally and physically more than we know. He was 6-0 as a starter and used his athleticism surprisingly well. I remember him being the lead (and very effective) blocker for Christian on a number of reverse plays. That was gone the following year and hurt his game. Probably made him think too much.

It may be that McKee will be playing lots, if not most of the game anyway, but West may get the start as a reward. It also is probable Shaw wants to minimize mistakes early until he sees what his running game will actually bring. From what I have heard, West is pretty good with throws in the short to medium range, but just doesn't have the arm to throw deep. Depending on the game plan, that may be fine, especially with Wilson out.

I highly doubt this is the reason. Shaw is starting West because he thinks that West gives the team the best chance of winning. We may disagree with that, and those who do will be proven right or wrong tomorrow.

I agree.  He thinks West gives the team the best chance of success, but that might be because of an over-emphasis on experience.

Well If West plays half the game goes 13 for 19 159 yards like he did against Oregon last year I’d be happy
Yes I can’t get the ucla game two years ago out of my mind either

We are stuck in the bizarre situation where our only real hope for a decent season is that our head coach is once again showing his total incompetence in picking the right QB.  This is a sad situation but everything about Stanford football right now is just depressing.  And that is before the season even starts where we at least have some hope.

LOL, the possibility that the coach might have been right and that all us bloviating keyboard coaches might have been wrong about our assessment of West just isn’t even contemplated.

If your Senior QB is not appreciably better than your RS Soph, you play the RS Soph, in hope he grows into the position as he gets more experience.

Based on what was shown today, West playing in games is as useless as tits on a bull for the Stanford Football program.

I am bumping this thread because it seems like an appropriate time to discuss Stanford's 2022 QB position. From this thread I learned some things about West and McKee, so thanks to all who provided such insightful contributions.
Now considering the  2021 QB performances, for the 2022 season is the likely starter West or McKee ?

I think that most folks who care think West has worn a Stanford uni for the last time. Here’s hoping McKee comes back healthier and more comfortable, and that either Patu or Daniels becomes a competent backup.

Yeah, my guess is West is off to law school and contemplating his political career.

RE: Jack West to start vs KSU - Austroturf - 11-28-2021

Yes, I would agree that West is done.  When Patu got the start against OSU, it was clear that Shaw sees no future for West at Stanford.  He will also not be drafted, so I suspect he will head off into some other professional direction.
