Joe, that's crazy depth, if all the positives about the 4th stringers (Demetre, Bosagna, Emma-Nnopu) turn out to be the least bit true. I'd bet Demetre gets a lot of playing time by EOY.

Since I live only 30 minutes east of Spokane I decided to buy tickets to watch our team play Gonzaga on the 21st. I tried to buy a ticket online, only to discover that the game is already sold out!

I have just looked at the official stat sheet on GoStanford -- Yes, an exhibition game against a totally overmatched opponent. But I don't know that I've ever seen a stat sheet where EVERY SINGLE PLAYER was a plus in the +/- stats (least was Prechtel, at 11, followed by Lacie with 12; most was Bosgana with 34). Also, everyone had double digit minutes, the most for Iriafen with 17:55. If this isn't a deep team, I don't know what the definition of that is.

speaking of definitions, if everyone plays less than half the game, you have to - by definition - have over 10 solid players.

It's going to be brutal, though, though given the strength of the pre-conference schedule and the the Pac-12 meatgrinder. I just hope we can keep everyone healthy. The depth can help that, meaning that Tara can let people rest in games as needed.
So . . . , onward!
I would rather we play a tough early schedule and test this team rather than breeze through a bunch of cupcakes with 30+ point wins. I wouldn't go so far as to wish we suffer a loss or two, but I hope we get challenged and have to dig deep to pull out victories.
Yes, how much can you conclude from this? How much did the team learn about playing against top teams? There's nothing wrong with scheduling an extreme mismatch I suppose to get everyone excited about the season.
Playing a cupcake in exhibition and a few mismatches against somewhat more respectable teams (Morgan State) is standard operating procedure. It gives Tara a chance to get our freshmen used to the pace of DIV I play, and gives the 2nd and 3rd stringers a lot of playing time that they could not receive in a more evenly matched game. But we will get to a Vic Schaeffer team (Texas) next week, and have Gonzaga, Maryland, Tennessee, and South Carolina (among others) before beginning an absolutely brutal Pac 12 schedule. By that point the rotation will be a lot less than the 17 on the roster. Our schedule looks to me to be as difficult as anyone in the country--we will see if it seems that way as the wins and losses get assigned.
I enjoy these games, partly because we do get to see players who will likely recede later in the year.

Oh, I believe you, sir.
DEMETRE is really a Top 10 recruit from the Class of 2021 - Prospect Nation #7 overall, ASGR #8 overall, Blue Star #10, ESPN Hoopgurlz #11 (she originally was ESPN Hoopgurlz #4, then went down to #7, and finally #11). But what makes her special is for a 6'3 player, she already had a 3-point shot in HS. Therefore, she can be considered a stretch Forward/combo Forward. That versatility will get her some playing time, realistically in the vicinity of 10 to 15 minutes/game
Then there's BOSGANA and EMMA-NNOPU, who are in the pipeline of the Greek and Australian senior national teams, respectively. I bet their respective national coaches want to see them as regular rotation players at Stanford ASAP.
At 6'2, BOSGANA is a tall and lanky SG who is aggressive at driving to the basket and can stroke from 3-point range, kinda giving me that Kate STARBIRD vibe. Unfortunately, the HULL twins and JUMP are ahead of her in the SG depth chart, so it will be a major challenge for her to crack the regular rotation this year.

A couple more observations now that I have scrutinized the stat sheet.
Anna Wilson at point guard--3 assists and 2 turnovers. At least a couple of those assists were spectacular. The turnovers came in the second half when it seemed to me she was trying to do too much. That is just a matter of experience. Clearly the vision and the physical skills are there. But I cannot stress enough how important it was that she hit those treys. We know from Marta Sniezek what happens to us when we run a "pure point guard" onto the floor who is not enough of an offensive threat. And we know that Wilson has been streaky on offense but consistent on defense. For her to give us what we need, she has to hit her shot enough to force all opposing teams to come to the perimeter to defend her. So far she has checked that box.
Prechtel and Iriafan each had 3 assists--as many as Wilson. The Princeton is working when bigs get assists. Clearly it was working yesterday.
41% three point shooting as a team. Granted, it was against inferior competition, but there are teams that can't shoot 41% in practice. This bodes well.
Scouting report defense. Clarke's top two scorers were held to 2 points and 4 points. They did get 13 points from a different player. But clearly our defense locked onto the scouting report and shut down their top two. Easy enough to do given the physical mismatch, but it is nice to see that our team executed the scouting report.

I'm hoping that Bosgana forces her way into the rotation this year. We always have great defensive teams. Wilson, Hamilton, Hull 1, Hull 2, Emma-Nnopu are all great perimeter defenders. And Brink is a great post defender. Plus the team defense and the help rotations are all so good. BUT, against the very best teams, we struggled to score. Yes we still won a lot of those games but if our 3-ball wasn't falling we were in trouble. We lost one of our best offense initiators in Williams to graduation. Yes we still have the amazing Haley Jones. But someone else needs to help initiate the offense. Lexie and Brink can do more. Wilson, Belibi, Lacie, Prechtel and Jump are all better when they receive the ball in scoring position vs initiating the offense. Bosgana looked very good at using her shifty moves, deceptive speed, passing vision and overall length to initiate the offense and either get a shot off in the lane or pass to an open teammate. Haley Jones is clearly the best at that on the team. But hopefully Bosgana gets the chance to develop into a second offense initiator.
I know the team tries to initiate the offense with Prechtel in the high post using her height to find cutters but it always seems a little too slow to develop and the really good defenses will snuff that out, shoot the gap and get a transition bucket going the other way. For that to really work, Prechtel also needs to be a threat to drive from the high post and she just isn't that kind of player.

Yeah, I'm sure playing against last year's National Champs and the fact that the Hull twins are from Spokane has made the game a very hot ticket.

I totally concur with your assessment of the limitations of Stanford's offense with their lack of personnel WHO CAN INDIVIDUALLY BREAK DOWN the half court defense of outstanding teams. Haley JONES has repeatedly shown that she can do that, and you observed from the exhibition game that Elena BOSGANA can also provide that. Hopefully, Tara and her coaching staff realizes that.

Yes, well, I hope those kids felt that way about their visit to Maples.
Did anyone notice that they started Skylar Culbertson with a big cast on her hand/wrist, and then subbed her out immediately after tip off? I wonder what the story is. According to their stat sheet, she is a senior who hasn't played this year at all--probably due to that injury. So maybe they wanted to give her an official start in an exhibition game, against Stanford.

Yes, I noticed that. I didn't look her up but assumed she must be a senior who was being given an honorary start.
I remember Stanford WVB once starting an injured senior but subbing her out before the first serve.

My seatmates and I had already commented on the cast. When we saw her on the floor for the tip, we simultaneously said, "Wait, she's PLAYING?" But then Tara called the TO so the could switch her out. Class act.
