So far the portal guys are all 2nd stringers, aren't they. They may want to see if someone wants to make them a starter.
More likely that they are looking for a grad school scholarship

True, that.

It occurs to me that one of the “larger” senior decisions, so to speak, belongs to Josh Pakola (who weighs 310 pounds.) Or it belongs to the university regarding Josh Pakola.
Nobody seems to know whether he’s still trying to get back and whether it will happen. I saw him hanging around an open practice from outside the rail before the season.

Pakola’s family refers to him as Stanford class of 2023. So hope so

Out of football, what three years? I wouldn't count on him Bobbbbbbb.

He played in 2020. I make that one year :)

2019 recruit. Made four tackles over two years. Some issues I gather. So my rosy eyed pal what impact do you think he will have? Are you still hoping for Jack Moller to finish his career? LOL.

Hey Phogge I have 4 seasons of eligibility left and have decided not to return. I've lost a step or two now that I'm in my 70's and as a former middle school WR I can only get separation when we run a QB sneak anyway. Alas, Shawvita won't return my calls. They'll sing a different song when their car warranties expire.

Hey Q, I didn't play enough my freshman year to letter at State. I'll go back and be a backup QB. Oops, we cancelled the program.

2019 - true freshman, played in 1 game, gained 50 pounds
2020 - Covid season, played in 3 games before leaving due to issues
2021 - DNP
2022 - ?
We just don't know if he's good yet. Four-star, 310-pound defensive linemen aren't growing on trees at Stanford. We will be playing true freshmen on the DL next year, so no joke, his return would be an important development at a position of great need.
I would even rank his return ahead of qwerty49's comeback, because we're already fairly deep at WR.

As always, remember that the charts under "Stanford Football Personnel" list eligibility status. I have demarcated the four current players in the transfer portal. (Justus Woods is not listed as he left the team early in the season.)

Agree, and too bad. I thought after five years he would want to move on with his life. But, if he hopes to continue to show talent to NFL, he probably has to enroll in a grad program. Many times he was the best Stan front seven player on the field.

Martinez originally committed to Cal.

Samuel, that was an interesting comment. Not sure whether it's good or bad.
By my count, the team has 59 returning scholarship players who will be in year 2-4. I'll assume no bad attrition there. (KBK or McKee would be really unfortunate departures that hurt far more than Reid.)
And absent a decommitment, I project 24 incoming players.
That leaves only 2 spots for returning 5th or 6th year players. I won't count any spots for incoming transfers as that would further constrain space for the valuable veterans on the roster. Although I think it would be a substantial loss if Pakola did not return, I won't count him either. Maybe you think losing Reid is worse anyway.
Absent attrition, that means there are likely only 2 spots (maybe fewer) for Michael Wilson, Brycen Tremayne, Ricky Miezan, Jacob Magnum-Farrar, Kendall Williamson.
So my question is whether you are expecting attrition that allows most or all of these guys to stay, or are you just opining that Reid is more valuable than all but two of these guys. If the former, is there anything solid to suggest you're correct? If the latter, I respectfully disagree.

I don't think he's NFL bound. Maybe a UDFA. He's been the same solid, not great player for years now. Likely going back home to Utah/BYU, and a free Masters while actually living with his wife seems like a good option.
The fact that he was frequently the best front seven player on the field is just as large of an indictment on our front seven as it is a compliment to him.
