The thing is that the artificial limits have existed for quite some time and we typically won anyways. What’s new is the “required sports”, which reduces the flexibility. An interesting exercise would be to see what would happen if we could just pick our best 19 sports, without the requirement that the come from baseball, mens and womens basketball, and womens volleyball. Looks like baseball and womens basketball score regardless, but that we would be able to substitute better scores for mens basketball and maybe womens volleyball.

What I see missing here is acknowledgement that Texas had a GREAT year. I’d take their year over ours even though ours was also accomplished.
Sometimes you need to tip your cap rather than complaining about the scoring.

They had a great year, but I feel like Texas has had similar performance in years past before the new required sports were introduced. I don't think their performance has markedly improved, they've always done pretty well in the sports that they focus on.

Looking at the spring sports recap and how many of their teams came in first or second, it almost wouldn't seem right if they didn't win it this year. Sometimes you just have credit the better team...

4 championships for Texas ties their school record, and they still have a chance for a 5th.
If they win it all in baseball, I don’t think any credible system would put Stanford in front of Texas. If we win the CWS, both teams will have four titles. Texas would have more second place teams, but Stanford would have more teams scoring points.
If we were to win it, I don’t know that I would trade a CWS title for Texas’ year.

I have keeping track of the Directors' Cup for the last 20 years, and, until last year, Texas was never a threat to Stanford's dominance. In 2018-19, Texas finished 4th, 355.25 points behind Stanford. In 2017-18, Texas finished 5th, 298.75 points behind Stanford. They were 7th in 2016-17, 9th in 2015-16 and in 2014-15. They finished outside the top 10 3 out of 4 years from 2009-10 to 2012-13. So, Texas had certainly been getting better, but there were other schools that were stronger. Florida has never finished lower than 7th. Only Stanford can also make that statement. Florida has also finished 2nd 5 times and 3rd 6 times. Until 2008-9, UCLA had also never finished outside the top 10. They've finished 2nd 8 times and 3rd 7 times. Thus, Florida and UCLA own essentially half of the 2nd and 3rd places of the 27 years the Cup has been awarded.
Texas is having a phenomenal year. They have 4 titles and 6 2nd places so far with baseball still to finish. Stanford has 3 titles and 1 2nd place. Tough to argue that Texas doesn't deserve the Cup.

Texas won't have women's tennis in the bag next year, though. It loses its top two players, sophomores Peyton Stearns and Kylie Collins, to the pro ranks and to LSU, respectively (UT's assistant coach is the new head coach at LSU). Texas also loses the freshmen Zamarripa sisters, who are turning pro.
