That fake tanned duck slammed into her going for a rebound.  Of course no foul called.

That doesn't sound very appetizing...but thanks! Sling giving me fits tonight.

We're up by 18 with Brink only scoring 3.  That's a good sign.

I predict that Lexie will give us back-to-back Pac-12 POW.

Tonight our 3rd Q scoring was higher than the first two.  Thanks Tara for correcting that issue.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Friday 7pm - CompSci87 - 01-07-2022

JVG was in briefly.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Friday 7pm - TheFarm07 - 01-07-2022

We lead 66-50 heading into the fourth quarter. We avoided our third quarter swoon (except for a 8-0 Ducks run roughly 3/5 of the way through the quarter that reduced the lead down to 10) and in the end, actually expanded our lead by five points.

Lexie still going strong, up to 25 points now (10/17 shooting, 5/8 from long range). Luckily Jones' injury does not appear to be serious and she was able to resume playing late in the third quarter.

Jump, the only other player in double digits, but our scoring is evenly split with nine players on the board. We are shooting very well for the game.

Outscored 12 4 in 4th. Too many turnovers

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Friday 7pm - martyup - 01-07-2022

Okay, this is getting scary.  I didn't expect to get uncomfortable about this game.  But, I'm there.

7 toss this qtr! Make it 8

It kind of feels like Shaw's turtling.

One of these refs looks like a younger version of Missy.  Perhaps her daughter?

Wow, Gonzaga is coming to play here Sunday!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Friday 7pm - TheFarm07 - 01-07-2022

We win 80-68 as we made the fourth quarter far more interesting than it should have been, as Oregon managed to trim the lead to within 7 at one point.

Lexie set a new career high with 33 points (13/22 shooting, 7/10 from 3-pt range) as she took over the game offensively with Jones and Jump as the other double digit contributors.

We couldn't stop Endyia Rogers on the other end, she had 22 points and Sabally had 19 points as well, but we largely neutralized Paopao who was just 4/18 from the floor.

We were fortunate that the Ducks could not capitalize on our mistakes, but those errors must be trimmed. It's frustrating, because I feel like a lot of the turnovers were unforced.

Why do we keep shooting ourselves in the foot? We turned the ball over 18 times, including four times in the last four minutes of the game; a lot of them unforced or trying to force the ball in. Fortunately, Belibi came up with a couple of great defensive possessions, preventing Sabally from scoring inside when Brink picked up her fourth foul.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Friday 7pm - 81alum - 01-07-2022

A superb 3rd quarter but the let-down came in the 4th--fortunately not long enough or steep enough to cost us the game.

But what a day for Lexie!  Career high 33 points on 7/10 three point shooting, and did not take a single free throw.  Reminded me of McPhee against Oregon.  Brink with 5 blocks and 4 fouls.

I worry about Feb 20 when we travel to Oregon.  Oregon will be substantially improved and in better shape by then.   But I will take this and enjoy the Lexie show for now ;)

Now, bring on Gonzaga!

Turnovers were a major issue. Agreed the vast majority unforced. Didn’t Lexie even dribble the ball off her foot leading to a backcourt violation once. Too many attempts trying to force into the post with no angle to make the pass. Sabally outplayed Brink who had another subpar game for her standards. We just need to play cleaner. Thank goodness for Lexie or who knows how this game plays out. Oregon is tough. The return game in Eugene will be tough for us to win.

It was a good game to be able to drink wine with in the 4th quarter! I needed that to survive to the end. But that's a W -- and what a game from Lexie!

RE: WBB: Stanford 80 Oregon 68 as Lexie hits 33 - qwerty49 - 01-07-2022

We are so lucky to have the Hulls.  Absolute ballers and what a night from Lexie.

A tip of the hat to Belibi and Iriafen for their inspired post play.  Brink was uneven again but sometimes I wonder if we expect too much from her at this point.  I just wish she would shoot ten thousand FTs in the off-season.

Jones started slow, not too engaged as we tried to figure out their zone, then warmed up some, but after that hit to the head she didn't seem quite the same.  At least 3 turnovers down the stretch.  Not always a great decision-maker, but she is the one I want on the foul line when we're in the bonus and the other team needs to foul.

Wilson was solid too, very much in the flow.  What a great TD pass she made!  Between her and Lacie I have no worries about PG.

When this team is in the right flow, it plays beautiful basketball.  I thought the team D in the first half was super, getting better all the time.  We really have quickness now, and that wasn't always so.  I thought TVD did a great job managing the rotation.  It just felt right.

Yeah, it was a nailbiter until Lexie hit the dagger at 1:32 to put us up by 10.  But don't forget that Oregon is a good team with solid starters and that they have some excellent players in Rogers and Sabally.  Paopao was wild tonight and the announcers kept making excuses for her, but she had a step on her defender every time.  And don't forget our big halftime lead was mainly due to great 3-pt shooting and the Lexie show.  Next time we see them I think it will be a lot closer.

RE: WBB: Stanford 80 Oregon 68 as Lexie hits 33 - chimera - 01-07-2022

That was a fun game that was too close late.  Lexie had a fantastic game.  The points say it was her best ever, amazing!  Overall, mostly due to hot three-point shooting, the offense looked good but man those turnovers in the second half.  It was like a collective brain fart.  those were some odd turnovers.  Lack of focus for a while.  Defense was just ok.  Oregon is a very good offensive team and they have a couple of players who are individually hard to stop, mostly Rogers in the game.  I thought the defense was solid generally but could have been better, and that the rebounding was subpar.  Fix the rebounding and this game is a big rout.  Nice to see a fuller roster, but wonder what is going on with Demetre, and with Harriel, who was not there.

RE: WBB: Stanford 80 Oregon 68 as Lexie hits 33 - CompSci87 - 01-08-2022

Did folks get the season ticket holder email with the link to a chalk talk by Kate Paye?

One little bit from there is she mentioned Harriel had had "different health issues" (I assume that means more than one), and so they are taking it slowly with her. She has made some good contributions in practice.

RE: WBB: Stanford 80 Oregon 68 as Lexie hits 33 - 81alum - 01-08-2022

Yes I did get that link and tried to share it, but it would not share.  Probably limited to season ticket holders some way.  I did note the information about Harriel.  I'm hoping that she and Brown will both be able to make important contributions next year, but we shall see.

With regard to last night's game, as I reflect on it, I have a few observations:

1) Lexie's barrage of treys was deliberately set up by the motion offense.  All the hits (and open misses) that she launched from the corner were the result of the motion offense pulling the zone away from the corner before delivering the ball back to Lexie for an open look.  Lexie would arrive in the corner often a half second before the ball was delivered to her there.  This is the same play that we often use to set up Jump, but last night it was working for Lexie.  I also noticed that when receiving the ball Lexie was nearly as fast at getting the shot off as Jump--not quite as fast--but fast.

2) When Oregon was forced out of the zone--which is notoriously bad at defending the corner--Lexie began to slash around screens.  She was 6/12 from two point range.

3) Oregon's zone wreaked havoc with our back door cuts.  A motion defense like the Princeton relies on dragging man players around and getting them out of position.  The Oregon zone was disciplined enough to guard passing lanes more than players, and this cut off nearly all passes to the interior.  Getting into the paint was only going to happen by drives from outside of the paint.  Hence Lexie's drives in the second half around screens.

4) Officiating last night was radically different than on our SEC trip as far as ball screens were concerned.  Oregon screeners routinely moved and hip checked and were not called for it.  Sabally in particular.  We probably did too.  Those were called a lot against Tennessee and S Carolina, including one tough call against Brink.  This probably did not favor either side.

5) One Paopao gets back to her full self she (and Oregon) will be a lot to handle.  Her drive and floater in the lane is impossible to defend.  Williams sometimes delivered a similar move, but this is Paopao's bread and butter.

6) Oregon really, really missed Sedona Prince.  It was abundantly clear that Sabally was out of breath and exhausted by Stanford's fast pace, and we took advantage of that.  Having Prince would have given them much needed depth.

7) I don't think hitting 12/21 three point shots (as we did) is a sustainable strategy for the long run. We need to perfect our midrange shooting (Demetre's forte) to serve as an alternative weapon against the zone. And whatever happened to Brink's jump shot? We saw a lot of mid range and three point shots from her last year, and many went in.

8) We will see how the next month goes, but I could easily see Oregon being favored over us when we play them at their place.  They are going to improve a lot.  We had better do so too.

I agree that Demetre would have been great to see in this game as she is money from mid-range and that is a total zone buster.  However I disagree about Brink’s mid-range.  She can hit the shot but she is far from consistent with it.  It’s a little like Jones can hit a 3-point shot but I don’t love her taking it.  I really like Brink’s current mentality (and presumably what the coaches have asked her to do) which is mostly drive from the high post and try to establish position in the low post.  They are such high percentage shots and when she has it going are pretty unstoppable unless she is double teamed.
