Man, if we would just settle down and wait for good opportunities we would be way ahead. We just seem determined to try to squeeze passes through keyholes to get that glory assist.

I was going to ask about all these bounce passes into traffic. Doesn’t seem like a high success rate strategy. Also see reluctance to pull the trigger as the shot clock winds down. I get that their defense is disruptive but we seem to be contributing to their disruption. We can still do this!

Jones, Brink, and Prechtel were all real solid in the 2nd half. Both Hulls struggled all game. Tough road place to play. Glad we pulled it out.

I hope Wilson is OK. Even though she doesn't start, she is our PG. She got practically all the PG minutes until her injury in this game.

We outscored them in every quarter except for the 1st. IMO, this was a C game for our team, primarily because of our 21 turnovers.

However, we held CO to their lowest score (52) of this season.

We looked extremely out of sorts on offense even in the second half - didn’t really feel at all like the Princeton Offense I am used to. But some big shots from Ashten and solid defense/rebounding was enough to pull it out.

A gigantic relief. I hate JR Payne teams--they stymie the flow of the game, and that is the point.

Our defense did a very good job tonight indeed. Hollingshed did not score 32 this time, she scored 7. Foreman did not go 5/10 as she did in their last game, she was 1/4 from three point range. And Sherrod had a big defensive impact, but scored only 6. It turns out that our defense was even better than their defense--they were less than 30% shooting, and despite our abominable first quarter we wound up at 39%.

Jones, Brink, and Prechtel saved us on offense in the second half. Jones scored 11--all in the second half, and I thought Prechtel's two treys midway through the fourth quarter were the decisive turning points of the game.

Kudos to Wilson, who rapidly replaced Lacie at point during the first quarter meltdown and helped to stabilize things. She wound up with 30 minutes to Lacie's 13. She did have 4 turnovers and just 1 assist, but assists were very hard to come by with this defense--we did manage to scratch 12 assists together which was pretty good for only 20 made baskets. But the most effective point guard--with 5 assists--was Jones. Unfortunately, Jones also had 7 turnovers.

Both teams shot 14/20 free throws. Our early season free throw woes seem to be abating.

Rebounding was a strength. We had 15 O-boards compared to their 18 D-boards. They had 9 O-boards compared to our 34 D-boards. Rebounding really was responsible for our win.

We also had 6 blocks and they had 0, but they had 15 steals compared with 6 for us. That was their biggest strength and the reason they got out to a big lead.

By the end of the game, I think the officiating had evened up and was fair. Colorado had 25 fouls compared with 14 for us--although we wound up shooting the same number of free throws. Colorado's frenetic defense was bound to cause fouls, and in the end it hurt them badly, with their leading scorer fouling out.

I hope that Wilson and Sherrod are both OK physically, Wilson seems to have hurt her lower back, Brink fell on Sherrod and Sherrod seemed to be having pain in the hip that she had previously injured. Wilson walked off the court after the game, Sherrod was carried.

All in all, the worst quarter of basketball this season followed by three gritty defensive quarters which we won. Colorado never scored more than 15 points in a quarter; we scored more point in the 2nd than the 1st, in the 3rd than the 2nd, and in the 4th than the 3rd.

Awesome 2nd half!
- Their aggressiveness on defense ended up being their downfall as Miller fouled out and both Hollingshead and Sherrod were in foul trouble in the 4th.
- Haley was great in the 2nd half.
- Cam completely neutralized Hollingshed. Loved that matchup.
- We are so deep and versatile. It's such a luxury to be able to play small some games and then big in others. 40 minutes from Prechtel and Belibi tonight and in the 2nd half we always had 2 bigs on the court along with Haley.
- They only ended up with 52 and that's just not enough against us. But if that team ever starts making 3's, they are trouble.

That went from the ridiculous to not quite the sublime, but to much better after that debacle of a first quarter. Never seen anything like it from a Stanford team, not even against Texas did we turn it over quite so much to start the game. Just not ready for the intensity and pressure. I thought the game was super physical and that the refs let a ton go early then tightened up in the third quarter. Miller getting into foul trouble helped us a lot. She was the one scoring for them when they needed it. Brink and Jones were not good first half, played well in the second half. I guess I could say that about everyone almost. Prechtel was great. Wilson did well running the show for the most part. Hope she is ok. Hope Sherrod is ok. that did not look good for her. Nice to see Van Gytenbeek get out there in her home state and hit a big three. All our CO players played and generally did well. Tough road win after an ugly start, I'll happily take it, but please, no more starts like that, for the sake of us loyal fans, whose heads explode when the team plays like that.

I’m with 81alum—I’ll take high-pressure, high-skill basketball against the South Carolinas of the world any day over a matchup with a Payne-coached Colorado.

I have to admire the Buffs’ grit and hustle; some of the dogged plays that Sherrod and her teammates make are the kind that I cheer for when they’re made by the Hulls. BUT they go a step further in a way that makes these games no fun to watch. I’m not praying for a win so much as I am praying that no one gets hurt (so much for that). I’ve got much less basketball expertise than others on this board, but it seems to me that Colorado really sets the tone for the level of physicality here. And sure, both the Wilson and Sherrod injuries were accidents that could happen in a lot of contexts—landing poorly and being landed on respectively. Still, common sense tells me that odds of injury go way up when bodies hit the floor as often as they do when Colorado ups the physicality ante. Getting the W becomes less about crisp ball movement, smart set pieces, and the kind of “beautiful basketball” our team plays at its best and more about who’s willing to muscle harder and tiptoe riiiight up to the line. I really, really hope that Wilson and Sherrod are ok (although things looked particularly grim for Sherrod). This style of play can come at a high cost to the very real lives and careers of deserving young women.

I will say, despite our ugly first quarter, I was especially proud this of win on an emotional level. It’s been frustrating to see this team get distracted and discombobulated in the third quarter and let their foot off the gas. Not today. They persevered and hopefully proved something to themselves. I’m always surprised when announcers seem surprised that Prechtel comes up big in moments like these; she’s made for them, and I love seeing Tara trust her to step up and deliver. Belibi played some impressive, encouragingly error-free ball when she was on the court. Iriafen made her minutes count and went after the ball without any freshman hesitation. And in a season where I’ve been missing Ki, it was great to see Wilson’s quickness and defensive skill return with impact. Certainly not our best game, but I’m a fan of the heart, resilience, and growth we saw tonight.

Glad we made it out. Wish we didn’t have to do it again (although at least we’ll be at Maples). I also hope our team stays healthy given the number of screaming, inconsistently masked fans in the CU Events Center. On to Utah!

A lousy start to the game, but Stanford played steady after that. Like a rising tide, Stanford just kept coming on.
Down 11 early? No panic, just play your game.
It seemed CU went to the 3pt shot too quickly, and that only dug a deeper hole for them. They have the defense that could have made the last 10 minutes different, but they weren't able to do it.

Next time, they may be hitting their 3s and not getting into foul trouble. It could have been tougher.

All 10 players did pretty well tonight. All scored. 4 players had 7 or 8 rebounds. +22 rebounds (incl. 45.5% under our basket). 70% FT%. 37.5 3PT%. The 1Q was a disaster offensively, but rebounding & defense kept us within striking distance.

Cameron didn't get a double-double, but her big number was 1 (foul). She kept the penetrators turning away from the basket.
Prechtel had another solid game against CU, with some big, long shots. Good near-basket defense.
Jones has a slow first half & way too many turnovers, but in the 2nd, I knew she could take it to the rim when the shot clock got low. 5 assists helped balance out those turnovers.
Lexie was maybe weaker than usual on offense and had more turnovers than desired, but is always there on defense.
Lacie did what Lacie always does - not too much scoring, but tenacious defense. 7 rebounds in only 12 minutes!
Jump - wow, she only had 2 3ptrs? - was playing like one of the Hulls.
Wilson played a mostly solid point for 30 of the first 36.5 minutes until she went out for an injury.
Fran didn't score much but was part of the Stanford shot vac, sucking up 7 rebounds in 15 minutes.
Jana and Kiki played 8 and 3 minutes each but did well in their few minutes.

Of note, their high scorer Hollingshead only scored 7 points in 32 minutes.
For once, the opponent was in much more foul trouble that Stanford!

Although the result of the foul calls wound up in Stanford's favor, the officiating was poor. Officials listed as Corey Long, Darren Krzesnik, Brenda Pantoja. The topper was the foul called on the 3pt shot near the end. The proper call was a non-shooting foul by whichever Hull it was against the player that fell into the shooter. The officials were inconsistent on the call when the defender has their hand on the dribbler for more than a touch. There was also the unusual call (Q2?) when one of the Hulls just took the dribble out of bounds and the official indicated she was pushed out and gave the ball to Stanford rather than calling a blocking foul.

Shot chart indicates CU had 11 (of 20) layups to Stanford's 10 (of 25). Lots of bunnies missed.
(Oddly, the same stats that say Stanford had 11 layups also says that Stanford only had 20 points in the paint!)
But Stanford had 10 (of 27) other shots to CU's 6 (of 32).

PS I think Stanford should trademark "Shot vac".
