My initial take on this:
Thank goodness Utah can't play defense like Colorado, and Colorado can't play offense like Utah.
The second game of an away series is always the hardest to prepare for. The players just have a lot fewer reps in practice to digest the scouting report. And Utah is very different than a year ago. So we came out looking unprepared and we were.
Neither Prechtel nor Belibi proved able to consistently score under the basket. Only Brink could do that. In the first half we had difficulties getting her the ball down low. Finally by the 4th quarter we solved the puzzle and she started scoring at will. She only missed 3 shots and got 7 O-boards--she might have scored each time she got the ball inside on either her first or second or third tries.
Lexie finally got her shooting touch back. And massive kudos to Wilson, who scored a much needed 12 points and usually at key moments. Lots of contributions from others.
Going forward, we must figure out how to defend the Utah three point play, which commonly involves a guard attacking the basket but then pitching back to an open three point shooter. It happened way too often. Definitely our worst defensive game of the year. Utah is the 3rd highest scoring team in the nation, but we did not know what to make of that stat with limited games. Well, it seems legit, and is the result of a really good offensive scheme and not superstar players. I admire them.

Both sides scored 18 points off of free throws.
Our turnovers started off poorly, but we wound up with 13 for the game, so a dramatic improvement in the second half.
We had 17 O-boards compared with Utah's 22 D-boards. That is the stat of the game.
Jump had 4 assists, as did Lexie. Jump is turning into an all-round stat-stuffer and not just a three point shooter.

Unless the postponed game at Washington is rescheduled, Stanford only has 1 more trip out of state in the regular season - at the Oregons. 7 of the final 12 games are at home plus games at Berkeley and at the So Cal schools.

Unhappy that a foul wasn't called on Brink on the rb she grasped over the head of the Col player? Called a tieup instead.

We ended up shooting 27-61 (44.3%), 11-27 (40.7%) and 18-24 (75%).
Utah ended up shooting 22-49 (44.9%), 11-28 (39.3%) and 18-25 (72%).
We had 41 rebounds to their 28. We had 17 offensive rebounds to their 6.
We won the 1st, 3rd, and 4th quarters. We outscored them 23 to 10 in the 4th.

The answer to all the “why can’t we…” questions is that we are not playing against cardboard cutouts, and the other team is actively trying to prevent us from executing our game plan. As one of the best teams in the country, we can usually prevail and do enough of what we want to do and prevent the other team from doing what it wants to do to win.
Although it would be nice to have a wire to wire dominant performance (Maryland was close to that, at least until the fourth quarter when the game was already decided), but again, the other team will work to try to at least get a good stretch in, even if they aren’t at Stanford’s level and stymying is for a whole game is not easy.

Their coach was really mad when their center fouled out for the moving screen on Lexie on the possession with 1:24 to go. Pretty clear moving screen preventing Lexie from trying to go around it. Then she didn't like the jump ball call with 33 seconds left. Fair call because Brink did have it along with the Utah player and was still holding on as the Utah player tried to rip it away from her.. Finally, the one where she went off was when Brink got the rebound off Wilson's missed free throw and put it right in the basket with 30 seconds to go. Brink got it over the Utah player but didn't look over the top of her. The rebound was high enough and in an area where Brink could grab it really high and put it right in without much contact with the Utah rebounder. The game was over at the point and the Utah coach just decided to vent her frustration. I get that a chance to beat #2 in the country had just slipped away but her meltdown wasn't really justified. No big deal in the end. Great game by Utah but Stanford was just a little better at the end.
Cheers,
Pete F.

I did not watch the game. Will catch it later. I just wanted to point out that ugly as it sounds like it was from reading these posts, we do this a few times every year, including last year - ugly road games in the conference season. So while it is surely worrying, it is not uncommon and doesn't mean the team is not on pace to improve and get to where they need to be. I think some of it is teams get sky high to play Stanford while Stanford players are coached not to get too high or too low for these regular season games. After that I can't explain it. We do need to cut out the slow starts. Those will bite us in the butt at some point if not.

I wonder if what happened to Belibi will become a new fad of collecting fouls? Start to line up for a wide-open 3, have an inside player come running across your path jumping to block the shot but aiming so as not to hit you, and then dribble into their path (vs away from their path). Seems pretty easy to do.

One of the downsides of scheduling two rivalry games the same weekend is that if either team is unable to play, then both games will be missed, making the ability to schedule the make-up games very difficult. On the other hand, maybe the healthy team can schedule make-ups that weekend.

I don't think anyone has commented on this -- but both Brink and Belibi had field goals that were mid-range jump shots, NOT in the paint. Don't think I've seen that previously this season, almost certain it was the 1st from Belibi, and one of the 1st from Brink. If they continue this in future games, that's a real plus.

No, Utah had the ball out-of-bounds at the Stanford end of the court, down 8. Utah calls time (with 2 more TO left) with 25.3 left in the game, presumably to advance the ball. Nothing unusual about that.
But the coach probably felt she needed to get her players fired up and to show she supported them. The game was almost definitely out of reach. I think she intentionally got a technical after she called the time-out. Looked pretty mild to me. I can see her complaint, even if I don't believe the calls were bad. Nothing unusual about a coach getting a T in that situation. But it did mean that the game was then over, but maybe it will bond coach & players for the future.
I wonder if Michele Smith would say "Not a big advocate of this communication strategy" (as she did about the quote attributed to Adia Barnes). Frankly, I don't see much difference in the two strategies.

It has absolutely been a thing in the NBA. This year they started to crack down on it.

Quote: After several years of player foul-hunting that had reached near-comic proportions in some cases, the NBA’s competition committee (made up of a select number of NBA owners, GMs, coaches, players and referees) decided enough was enough.
