I went to an early practice Lewis’ Frosh season and what a revelation. A gun for an arm. It had been a dry spell after Dick Norman

Probably the best Stanford punter ever too Bobbbbbbbbb.

RE: Mahomes vs Allen - jacket3ree - 01-24-2022

I'm trying to recall a better set of divisional playoff games in a single weekend ever.  Those games were all nuts. I grew up in Denver with no hatred toward the Chiefs (or Chargers, but eff the Raiders) but have developed an affinity for the Bills over the years.  Denver fans became professionals at suffering brutal Super Bowl losses, but what Buffalo fans had to go through, with four straight cascadingly worse defeats?  Ooof.  Plus I kinda like the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area.  Also, while not a real Niner faithful, my wife is, and I don't see the Niners beating Mahomes in any kind of rematch. They had him third and a mile two years ago and it didn't matter.

But what a great nightcap to the weekend.  Crazy good QB play. Crazy.

Watched with Mrs. Jacketree and I remarked that the Bills needed to find a way to hold the ball until the last play.  "Can't screw around she said."  That missile to Davis.  "I don't know.....13 seconds......"

We both would have squibbed it.  Honestly if they were ahead by more than 3, I would have done an onside kick. That will waste at least five seconds in a scrum, leaving one Hail Mary from 60 yards out, or hook and lateral junk. But they couldn't do that. Butker is way too good despite a case of the mini yips earlier in the game. (Always happy to see Tech's hero of heroes do well.)

Not too many teams with a great QB and time for two plays needing a FG would run stupid lateral stuff on a kickoff return. NFL rules say you can fair catch an airborne scrimmage kick that has crossed the line of scrimmage (punt), or an airborne free kick (kickoff).  Once it hits the ground, no fair catch. So I think you have to squib.  If KC is smart they down it immediately, because with their remaining timeouts that still gives them at least two plays to get into FG range. As it was that's all they needed.

Because....what the hell was Buffalo doing on defense?  Romo couldn't believe it.  Rush no one, leave the middle of the field wide open.  If I'm the Bills' owner, I think that DC is looking for another job.  Inexcusable. Play straight up, just normal Cover 2 with some pressure, and if you get beat (most likely tied), you get beat. Maybe spy Mahomes, but with normal coverage some long scramble just eats clock.

I think if the Bills won the coin toss, they win. Allen was unstoppable.

KC was the only home team/favorite to win.

RE: Mahomes vs Allen - Branner77 - 01-24-2022

Felt bad for Phillips and Josh Allen. Bills vaunted pass defense had inflated stats by "defending" against pitiful Jets, Dolphins, New Engl passing "attacks" for 6 games per season. Also glad that Jordan Poyer went home a loser. Too often a cheap shot player, going all the way back to his Ore St blindside/targeting hit on Chris Owusu.

Most memorable Stanford punter? Tripp Hardin, a freshman dorm mate.

Several years after I graduated, I remember watching the Masters and almost fell off my sofa. There was Hord Hardin, as president of Augusta National, presiding over the Green Jacket ceremony. Tripp was formally Hord Hardin the third. Who knew. . . .

RE: Mahomes vs Allen - Phogge - 01-24-2022

Lewis punted for the Bengals for years. A few kicked them higher but nobody in red kicked them longer. He had A 90 yard TD run when they shifted him to halfback in Washington’s first year as an awful QB. And a great BG in the rain at Cal.

RE: Mahomes vs Allen - lex24 - 01-24-2022

Wonderful video out there of Mahomes leaving Chiefs celebration, racing across field to find Allen, give him a hug etc.  Mahomes is not only fantastic QB, he seems like a terrific young man.

Yep, although Bailey gives him a run for the money.

It’s my actual job to look at digital media to prepare for the game I shoot that week. I’m shooting top EZ at the SB so I will study the media from both title games. Hope KC makes it because they have so many weapons to make it an interesting game.

No, I don’t.  And I get you were talking about more than that route.  Just remarking on how pathetic Bills defense was.

As an brobdingnagian Josh Allen  fan who really  wanted to see him win, I have to say (as Josh himself  said last night): Mahomes running across the field to find Allen after the game was really classy. Hard to root against that guy, so I won't.

On the other hand, no.10 on the Chiefs can . . . . Well, you get the idea.

I like Mahomey. He seems like a good guy. I have a different opinion of his gf/wife, brother, and mother. They appear to want to be protagonists through no merit of their own.

RE: Mahomes vs Allen - Phogge - 01-25-2022

Allen is going to win a SB. Mahomes too. But as Viggo Mortensen said, "Not this year."

RE: Mahomes vs Allen - jacket3ree - 01-25-2022

Dan Marino was going win a couple. We'll see.  KC and Mahomes have to be the favorite at this point, don't they?  First four years of his career: Four AFC title games, two or three Super Bowls, and maybe two titles.  Draft needs are different for every team, but that's a pretty solid start to Round 1 in 2017.

1. Miles Garrett (DE)
2. Mitch Trubisky (QB) whoops
3. Solomon Thomas (DE - Niners pick)
4. Leonard Fournette (RB)
5. Corey Davis (WR)
6. Jamal Adams (S)
7. Mike Williams (WR)
8. C Mac (RB)
9. John Ross (WR)
10. Mahomes (GOATish looking QB)

Did the Niners trade for Jimmy G before or after the 2017 draft?  Switch QBs and the Niners crush the Chiefs the last time, if the Chiefs even get there without Mahomes.

RE: Mahomes vs Allen - akiddoc - 01-25-2022

By rule, once the ball hits the ground on a kick off and it is recovered by the receiving team, at least one second comes off the clock. Essentially the receiving team must fall on the ball while it is on the ground or be on a knee when recovering/catching it to keep the run off down to one second.

Garoppolo trade was about six months after the 2017 draft. Obviously all nine teams ahead of KC would draft Mahomes if they could go back in time.

Lewis played pro ball in Canada at one point.  I thought he would excel in Canada since their game was more wide open with a wider field and Lewis was very athletic for a qb at the time.  But maybe our neighbors to the north look at Lewis as the second coming of Joe Kapp and decided to go a much different direction.

And how many times have you seen a squib kick bounce off some guy and roll around.  Brain fart of major proportions.

RE: Mahomes vs Allen - Phogge - 01-26-2022

Big blow to Lewis in 1965 was losing Bob Blunt early in the season. Stanford’s only real speed. Ralston recruited one of the greatest classes ever who became sophs in ‘66. Gene Washington was anointed QB and Lewis moved to halfback. Washington failed and Lewis took over late in the year. Who knows how good they would have been if Ralston had moved Wash to WR at the start.

Mega Josh  Allen fan here, but I don't  know if he will ever win, or even compete in, a Super Bowl. Father Time gets all of us. Pretty soon, running won't  be as big a part of his arsenal. Will experience and game savvy fill that hole, like it did for John Elway? I certainly  hope so, but that is not automatic.

Also, when you run as much as he does, there is a substantial and constant  risk of season ending injuries, especially given the ridiculously long NFL season. We Wyoming  football  fans already known that Allen is one hit away from  being out for the rest of the year, despite his size.

Then you figure in the NFL salary cap. Mahomes already has more weapons than Allen has. Will the Bills make wise enough roster moves to deal with the lower and lower cap space left by Allen's contract? Personally, I kind of like the Buffalo area, but it is a challenging place to recruit free agent talent to.

Bottom line: None of us knows how the planets will line up in future years. Allen may never get another shot.

What we do know is that there was a clear path to a possible Super Bowl win for Buffalo with 13 seconds left in Sunday's game. So I will repeat what I was yelling then:

Don't kick it deep. Squib it.

What the Bills did at that point was monumentally stupid. There may never be another chance. I hope there is, but none of us is promised tomorrow.
