so there was a chance...

I missed the game and only found out what happened by reading this thread.  Is Bobby Hurley still alive and not incarcerated?  Because I've got to think that he either dropped dead of a heart attack or punched a ref (or Hasse).

RE: MBB: Pac-12 tournament - 2006alum - 03-09-2022

Is it bad that I'm annoyed we won because there's now a slightly more plausible change we're stuck with Haase for another year?

RE: MBB: Pac-12 tournament - martyup - 03-09-2022

Keefe with a double-double!

Down 16 with 3 minutes to play is not a good look for a coach.  I'm not sure the miracle comeback can be credited to Hasse.

As you are blasting the guy after one of the most miraculous Ws in Stanford hoops history, can you at least show enough respect to spell his name correctly?  It's Haase.  [And it's hard not to be exceptionally happy for (a) the players, and (b) the staff, after a comeback like that].

How about resuming the drum beat after AZ breaks out the can of whoop-a$$ tomorrow?  At least let them all enjoy today.

There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth in Tempe.

RE: MBB: Pac-12 tournament - martyup - 03-09-2022

"not a good look" is blasting?  Give me a break.  The point is that the players did a great job of executing a 16-1 run to finish the game with a win.  I don't think that run will affect any decision that may be made about the coach's continuing employment at Stanford.

RE: MBB: Pac-12 tournament - Papa John - 03-09-2022

Stanford outscored ASU 16-1 in the last 3 minutes. After Kimani Lawrence's dunk and missed free throw at 3:01, ASU had 8 possessions. They went 0-2 FG (not a typo), 1-4 FT, 2 TOs. What a meltdown, and what a comeback for the Cardinal.

And while Ingram struggled to score, he pulled down 10 rebounds, including the final rebound of the game, had 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block and only committed 2 TOs.

Is a 16-1 run to close out the game "a good look," or just one not attributable to the coach?

Look, I fundamentally believe that Haase must be evaluated on the overall body of work (think Samuel McF best summarized this here or on a post on TOS).  This last game is part of that body, as will be the AZ game tomorrow, which likely will be an L.

The real point was (a) to ask you to spell the guy's name correctly, and (b) to let the team and staff enjoy this one.

They deserve it.

RE: MBB: Pac-12 tournament - martyup - 03-09-2022

Thank you for pointing out my typo on our coach's name.  I'll do my best to avoid such errors in the future.  I'm pretty sure that nothing I type here will interfere with the team and staff's enjoyment of this win.  And by the way . . .

RE: MBB: Pac-12 tournament - 2006alum - 03-09-2022

How much joy should our 16-15 (Massey no. 87th ranked) team take from beating a 14-17 (Massey no. 79th ranked) team by one point? I think that kind of demonstrates the problem I have: even our heroic wins are so utterly irrelevant that it's hard to get excited.

I'm thrilled for the guys and was jumping up and down in the final minute, but it's hard not to worry about this stuff. A blow-out loss, which it was looking like until 3 mins to go, to lose the final 6 games "feels" different than this. A miracle comeback in the first game of the conference tournament against a mediocre team -- and it takes two to tango...ASU coughed it up with turnovers and missed free throws (including two front ends of one and ones) at the same time as we finally started hitting some shots -- of course shouldn't save Haase's job or change the view of the season or his tenure. Who knows how Muir thinks though. If we play well in a valiant loss to Arizona tomorrow, it's not that hard to imagine a sell-job that the team was playing hard and showed signs of life despite losing 5 of their last 6. I don't buy it, but the fear is real! In my view there's nothing that could happen from here, short of winning the Pac-12 tournament then getting to the Final Four (!), that should save Haase's job.

My thoughts exactly, and all for a chance to be crushed by Arizona.  But at least the youngsters had a "March moment."

The chance was 100%, and is now still 100%.

RE: MBB: Pac-12 tournament - BostonCard - 03-09-2022

100% stuck or 100% fired?  I figured we were stuck with him, but Bob, who knows about these things has heard rumblings that he would not be back.

I am thrilled for the team. I will never root against Stanford. My hope is that Haase leads the team to an upset of Arizona, and then wins the PAC-12 tournament and takes us to the tourney. The chances of that are vanishingly small, though as someone mentioned, the chances of coming back from a 14 point deficit with 3 minutes to go were also vanishingly small.  I’ll take it, enjoy the night, and then go back to arguing that Haase should be fired after we get smoked (in all likelihood) tomorrow.

Frankly, I'm really tired of such negativism.  I hope the players on these teams never hear of The CardBoard so they never wander here and see this stuff.

YES -- this baby will be ugly...
AOC & Riley

Amazing comeback
HIGHLIGHTS... Man, go buy a lottery ticket! Spencer Jones with clutch 3s, and Keefe with the throw-it-in at the buzzer!

Nope. But when the couple fights constantly and has to call the cops to resolve their differences, I think, "gee, I hope they separate."  And when the kid isn't provided with adequate food, shelter, and nourishment, at some point I think it's time for CPS to step in.

And that's where I'm at with Haase. Those analogies are much harsher than I wish them to be, but the reality is that I have zero faith that he will ever be able to right the ship, so I'm left to hope against hope that a teacher reports the parents to CPS and makes the suffering end.

ETA: Sorry to be harsh, but we have by far the largest endowment for a D1 school, easily the greatest endowment dollars per undergrad, and we're parents' and students' number one dream school year after year. We have what is unquestionably the best student-athlete culture in the country in terms of recognizing the importance of both the student and the athlete. We've shown we can recruit and admit one and dones, to boot.

I'm simply not willing to tolerate this kind of mediocrity, and while it's not solely Haase's fault, we've been wandering in the desert for the better part of 20 years now, and I'm pretty dang sick of it.

RE: MBB: Pac-12 tournament - needle - 03-09-2022

Didn't see a second of the game, but am extremely happy that the team gets at least one highlight memory in what's been a dreadful 3+ weeks to close out a year/career.

Stanford:  "We will continue our Vegas magic!!!  Wildcats, prepare to face our wrath!!!  RRRRRRRRRRR!!!"
