But worst case, Zhang hits a quadruple bogey, and then her score doesn’t count, so the worst Stanford can do is get to +12.

And just like that, Zhang pars it and Stanford wins the stroke play portion, taking the one seed and earning ourselves a match against Georgia… and Zhang is your individual national champion.

I understand the history associated with the #1 seed but, all things considering, I am excited about how things ended up today. First off, there was no tie for the 8th seed which is actually really helpful for the #1 seed in my opinion. When teams have to go to a playoff hole they get experience "playing for their lives" and the winner of the playoff has that experience plus momentum heading into match play playing with house money. Secondly, we are on the opposite side of the bracket of Oregon and SJSU and ASU (home course advantage) did not make the cut. There are few things more exciting than college golf match play, hopefully we have 3 rounds to enjoy!

So the individual winner can only come from the final 15 teams? What if a team is No. 20 after Day 2, but their top player is leading the tournament… is she basically done and doesn’t get a chance to compete for the individual crown?

The eighth place individual was from Ole Miss and played the entire tournament as an individual. Borja and Lau, both from Michigan (who didn’t make the cut) were tied for 13th on the individual side.
the individual cut was at +7.

The top 8 individuals from teams that didn't make the top 15 also made the cut.

Interesting order of play for Stanford. Heck in the leadoff spot, Zhang in the middle, and Krauter & Seay as the anchor matches.
ASU & U$C finish 9th & 10th. Really disappointing for both teams, but especially ASU who was effectively the host (although Grayhawk is not their home course).
#3 South Carolina & #4 Wake Forest also missed the cut.

Here's a question from a neophyte on this scheduling format. It shows Stanford tee times starting from 7:10 am to 7:50 am. I believe Golf Channel coverage doesn't start until 2:00 pm. Is that correct?

There should be no doubt by now that Heck is playing until Stanford either wins the NC or loses a match. No way that Coach Walker would insert Sturdza, a frosh with no NCAA championship experience, into the lineup at this stage.
Match play is much different from stroke play. It is definitely more pressured. Every match counts. A player cannot help but feel the weight of their teammates' expectations. Stanford has even more pressure as the #1 seed and the #1 team all season. An opponent like Georgia may feel like they are playing with house money. Less pressure, nothing to lose. I hope that the Stanford players can use the experience that they gained last season when 4 of the 5 (all except Zhang) were in the quarterfinal match which Stanford lost to Arizona. Seay and Heck won. Englemann and Krauter lost. Krauter also played in match play in 2019 when Stanford lost 3-2 to Duke in the quarters. Krauter won her match that year.
Individual records and rankings go out the window for match play (see last year when Gile Bite Starkute ranked about 250th in the world beat 2 time 1st team All American Angelina Ye from Stanford in the deciding match). I'll just say that I trust Coach Walker to put her players in the best position to be successful. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow which is the longest, hardest, and most exciting day in college golf all year. Go Cardinal!!

I think Walker got the matchups she wanted, even if they are not necessarily in the order she might have thought ideal. Now it's up to the players to do their thing; if they play well they'll win, if they don't they probably won't. But I hope the team that shows up tomorrow resembles the third-round team much more than the fourth-round team! Maybe it was good to get one lesser round out of their system.

Krauter posted her best score of the week today. Seay also posted her best score of the week (aided greatly by an ace). Zhang stumbled a bit, but I have every faith in her. She may be right up there with Mariah Stackhouse in terms of mental toughness.
The wild cards are Heck and Englemann. Englemann posted no birdies today. Heck's only birdie came on the final hole. Is that a sign of fatigue perhaps by both of them? I think that Stanford has to get a win out of 1 of those 2.
Keep an eye on Bae and Mahe from Georgia. Birdies are very big in match play and Mahe led the entire field with 16 birdies during the 4 stroke play rounds. Bae was close behind with 14. A team comparison of birdies:
Heck (12) vs. Bae (14)
Englemann (7) vs. Don (10)
Zhang (15) vs. Mahe (16) <---- marquee match
Krauter (9) vs. Cowart (2, but she only played 2 of the 4 rounds)
Seay (9) vs. Hung (4)
I'll also be watching the Oregon-San Jose State match. They have arguably been the 2 best teams during the spring golf season. Should be a barnburner.

Coverage of the quarterfinals starts at 12 Eastern/9a Pacific and coverage of the semis starts at 2p Eastern/11a Pacific

Stanford held onto first place despite Zhang & Heck both playing poorly (for them). This team has depth that I don't think anyone else can hang with, but in match play you just never know (see last year). They can't play like that today (or tomorrow if they get there) but they know that and I think they have that "bad round" under their belt now.
The one thing that worries me is Heck's stamina. Today is going to be a very long day - hopefully.

The score was briefly 3-1-1 to Georgia, but they dropped a lead and so did we. Heck is 1 down through 5 and Zhang is 2 down through 3, while the other three are all square. Still very early, of course.
Englemann took back her lead by winning the 5th, Zhang won the 4th hole to get back to 1 down, then Englemann won the 6th to go 2 up, then Zhang won the 5th to get back to all square, and then Heck won the 7th to get her match back to all square. A nice little momentum swing there! Four matches all square, and Englemann up 2.

The lead match Heck vs. Bae has completed 9 holes. They are all square. Among the 5 matches, only Englemann has held a lead so far.
Zhang has played sloppy with 4 bogeys in 8 holes. She is lucky to be only 1 down.

Ugh, well, it's all there to play for. Three matches (Heck, Englemann, Krauter) all square, with Zhang and Seay both 1 down. Time to turn it on!
And right on cue, Krauter birdies the 8th to take the first lead in that match!
