anyone know what is required/likely to cost if the SEC/Big 10 would want to get rid of some existing members who are located in less desirable TV markets?

I have always understood the demographics drive the TV revenue. In the Pac-12 only the massive LA media market has demographics broadcasters crave. UCLA & USC are simply more desirable because of their location in an important media market and talent pool.
Most of the other schools in the Pac-12 don't have enough support by TV viewers in their markets, forget the rest of the USA. That's not Larry's fault. Larry bet big on expanding the Pac-10 to sweep in Texas, but it fell apart. He made a lot of mistakes, but look at the Big12. Texas was given so much but in the end they still left for a conference with better TV demographics.
FWIW if/when USC and UCLA move to the BigTen they will almost certainly struggle.
tOSU, Michigan & Wisconsin will be able to tell CA recruits they will get to play in front of their family a few times over 4 years and will be on real national TV every weekend. Worse USC and UCLA players will need to fly 4-5 hours to play early Eastern time zone games 4+ times a season. Even NFL teams from the west often lose those games, I just can't imagine that USC or UCLA will be better off. In the NFL it is OK to go 12-5, so dropping a game or two because of travel logistics is not the end of a season. Losing a few games in a college season is a few too many. I expect the existing BigTen coaches will be more than capable of explaining that SoCal based recruits.
And then there will be those UCLA conference home games with the Midwestern BigTen team packing the house will not help their cause at all. At least they will get $10-20 million more per year in TV revenue and will certainly sell more tickets to their "home" games.

With all due respect to the non revenue sports the nets don't care. Perhaps the CWS can buck that. It's nice to watch the NCAA golf tourneys but I bet that the ratings are miniscule.
I wonder how the Stanford Brahmans will feel about their hoops teams flying to Ann Arbor, College Station, Bloomington and points east for games. Same for baseball and softball. Plus you know that sooner or later the BIG20 will be playing primetime football on Wednesday and Thursday.
Stanford, if offered, will be forced to accept unless the school decides to disarm. Hard to believe that the Domers would refuse.
I'm also not so sure that the Bay Area has enough blue chippers to whet the super conferences' appetite. I think Oregon and ASU are more attractive and Utah and Colorado are closer to the center of the country.

I'm sure the USC alums will love this. No trips to the Bay or Arizona or the Rockies. Instead they can get cheese in Madison, rolled oats in Iowa City, champaign in Urbana, boilers in West Lafayette, etc, etc etc. They must be ecstatic. . ..

Is it possible USC was on this course and it was used to help the pitch with Lincoln Riley and also his transfers?

He says Big 10 to 18 teams. Most tweets coming out now say Big 10 to 20 teams.
I think UNC and Duke are in an iron-clad deal with ACC and won't be able to get out.
I wonder what UCLA and USC Olympic sports athletes think of going to Wisconsin and Minnesota in the dead of winter.
If PAC-10 stays intact will it be cut in Stanford sports programs deja vu all over again?

i would think it would hurt recruiting. why would you go to ucla to play half your games on the east coast? why not just go to penn state in the first place?

I just can't believe that USC/UCLA want to be the only west coast teams in a conference and have to take big flights back east to play almost every game in every sport. It makes a lot more sense that they have gotten assurances that the B10 will add 2-4 more west coast teams. That would make this totally doable. Still play ~5 games on the west coast and travel a bunch less.
The question is who gets invited. Here are the media markets:
LA 5.5
SF 2.5
PHX 1.9
SEA 1.8
DEN 1.6
SAC 1.4
PRT 1.1
SD 1.1
SLC 0.9
Not sure what either cal or Stanford really bring from the SF media market. It is clearly the biggest but those schools don't draw. Stanford's big advantage will be the strength of both our overall program but also both our football & hoop teams which have sucked recently, actually have at least a history of being pretty good at times.
UW makes a ton of sense - big market - strong sports programs - only really need one school.
Both ASU & CO seem to make sense from a media perspective. But both have limited history of success other than CO in football 30+ years ago.
UO only makes sense if you don't care about media but they have a strong programs. Also may need to take to get UW.

Especially in the non-revenue sports. What student athlete, yes, student, would want to spend a ton of time traveling. Even with a few additional schools from the west, it's still a nightmare.

If Washington, Oregon, Stanford, kal went too, that could limit the travel time for the LA teams and also preserve some of the rivalries across a bunch of sports. Also, B1G apparently likes AAU schools and those 4 fit. Regarding actual draw on TV markets, they supposedly got Rutgers for the NY market which is even more of a stretch than Stanford/kal.
If the presidents have a say, that could be part of the negotiations. Preserve rivalries, limit travel time.

Mine is on my lap as I type. Keeps me calm. When she was a kitten a few years back, she fell asleep on me and kept me from screaming and throwing things at the tv while we were getting killed by the Domers. . . .
She's a hoot on zoom calls, especially with my international clients.

One of the articles suggested that the other 4 members of the Pac-12 South (AZ, ASU, CO, UT) could join the Big12.

I am sure that playing football or soccer or baseball will be a real joy when it is 90 degrees with 80 percent humidity which has been known to occur in the Midwest. Back in the day when Stanford was playing Big Ten Style Football the other teams in the Pac 12 did not look forward to the physical beating, especially usc and ucla, now those two will get pounded on by Hardballs, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinios, Minn. and Michigan State just for grins.
