I too pine for an era when playing football was less transactional, when guys played for one another and for the joy of the sport, not to best position themselves for the NFL or for the transfer portal. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely support having players who instill a culture that you stay at the school out of loyalty for one another and put the team in front of individual goals, and, institutionally, I've said several times that the biggest thing we can be doing (more so than NILs or transfer portals) is to plan for and enable graduate studies among our own student athletes. I think that's something that can easily be sold to the powers that be, to not only be able to say that we have very high graduation rates, but that a substantial proportion of our student athletes graduate with a master's degree or a second undergraduate degree.
But I am also a realist, and as it has become increasingly obvious that the NCAA, the schools, the coaches, and even many fans view student athletes as an expendable means to an end (winning football games and drawing in money from TV), and increasingly view players throughout the college football landscape prioritize advancing their own aims rather than the teams, it is really hard to blame our guys for doing what, basically, everyone else is doing. When everyone else is looking out only for themselves, it is hard to expect our guys to look out for the team at the expense of their own ambitions.

I haven't given up. There is very strong evidence Stanford football players have been uniquely selfish/individual career-oriented under Shaw. This is the result of a complex mix of factors, some within our control and some not. There are also Stanford-specific things that make attrition difficult. But the fact is our players leave for the NFL extremely readily, transfer for lateral football opportunities extremely readily, and focus on the 40 year decision/non-football futures/big courseloads to maximize academic optionality at the expense of football far more than players at other schools. These are things a new coach/culture COULD (not necessarily will) have an influence on, potentially at the margins but also potentially more fundamentally.
Believe me, our players are not "doing what everybody else is doing." We've become unusually selfish (or put more charitably individually career-oriented/professionally-oriented/academic) than others.

I haven’t looked systematically, but the large number of transfers in our conference rivals suggests that this is not a Stanford-specific issues. I mean, in order for USC to bring in a gazillion transfer, they had to have at least that many roster spots; those came from when, for example, Slovis to Pitt and Dart to Ole Miss suggests that this is not a uniquely Stanford problem.
We are in a new world.

Leading tackler for the last two years and second in 2020. I know the trend is dispiriting, but it is happening everywhere to a rapidly increasing degree. This can certainly be expected during a coaching transition, especially among graduates. I'd be interested in seeing a quantitative analysis vs. other teams, along the lines that BC is suggesting, if anyone is aware of one or has time to compile all the data.

Damuni in portal as grad transfer per his social media. DL Jacob Katona in portal per 24/7 portal tracker. PWO who is an academic sophomore?
RE: Portal tracker -
msqueri - 12-02-2022
I think quantitative analysis of this misses the point to a degree. Yes, most teams are now seeing a lot of transfers. What's damning for Stanford is our best players are transferring, many of whom end up transferring fairly laterally. Moreover, Stanford's culture of leaving is a lot more than the transfer portal. The most damning part by far is how many players - year after year - leave eligibility on the table to be Day 2, Day 3, or undrafted picks. That's really not normal.

Notre Dame's starting QB has declared his intent to transfer. Not a great endorsement for Marcus Freeman. Stanford does need QBs.

If Damuni graduated and didn't make the grad school grade at Stanford, the portal is all that is left. So counting that as a result of the departure of Shaw makes no sense. Besides, opting for the portal is becoming endemic to the game. Michigan's backup QB is heading out. Guys want to start or play a lot and in theory the portal offers that opportunity. Loyalty to brand and coach is probably going to diminish as we become semi-pro teams for the NFL.

"Starting"
Come on, obviously a backup who played because of injury to the starter and, moreover, isn't good enough to prevent Notre Dame from getting a much higher-profile QB like Hudson Card (or heck, Tanner McKee). This isn't an indictment of Freeman. It's what QB2s in college football do these days.

Too bad, but if he is graduating and didn't make the cut for graduate school at Stanford he is gone. We need to stop getting upset by guys who graduate and can't make our graduate school cut. It is what it is. Now if we know they got accepted into a Stanford Masters program that is a different deal. We have more to worry about with the non graduates who want to leave.

Didn't he get the job because the starting QB got hurt? Perhaps he feels he is going to lose it again and wants to go somewhere that he feels he will definitely be the starter.

Yes, Tyler Buchner had a season-ending injury. Drew Pyne was the back-up and started the rest of the season. If Pyne is transferring, it's because he is afraid he won't be starting next year. Maybe the new Stanford coach should give him a look.

Wonder if he's considering the offensive juggernaut the Irish lost to on Oct 15?...... (I know, I know - a W's a W and I <was> thankful for that one)

"best players" - is that really saying that much? While the transfer portal is allowing many players to leave, it gives the new coach a brobdingnagian opportunity to create a new atmosphere around the team.

Puzzled as to why you're shaming the Merc-News. Is the headline factually incorrect or misleading? As for click-bait, headline writers are valued and remain employed by their skill to attract readership. It's in the business model. :)
