RE: Isn't there a basketball game on now - Mick - 12-03-2022

4,848 for a home men's game vs. #19 UCLA. The last year Monty was coach, Stanford drew a similar amount for an early season game against Sac State. Their last seven games that season were sellouts.

Average attendance stats over the last decade about -- what -- half full?

RE: Isn't there a basketball game on now - BostonCard - 12-04-2022

It’s halftime of the ASU game and I don’t think this team merits starting a new thread for.
Nine turnovers and seven field goals at the half sums it up. Stanford trails 32-21 to ASU and this looks like a bottom quartile pac-12 team.

You’re right no new thread deserved
At the half we are typical of Haase’s teams against anyone good: 5 assists to 9 turnovers
And distinctly being out hustled
Hard to watch, even with an adult beverage to wash it down

Within 4 now after a S Jones 3.

RE: Isn't there a basketball game on now - BostonCard - 12-04-2022

We got it as close as two, but with less than 2 minutes left, ASU is up 8.

At least Haase is doing a great job at getting pre-NBA players to come in and spend a few months on campus.
Perhaps our futility has been the selling point.

Why burn yourself out with a deep run in a conference tournament and a deep run in the NCAA tournament in the weeks before the NBA draft analysis starts.   Why waste time learning a complex college system that you'll only use for a season or two?

Wouldn't it be better to play a glorified pick-up game offense and get most of March off so you can work with agents and trainers before the draft?

RE: Isn't there a basketball game on now - BostonCard - 12-04-2022

I don’t think there is a coach in the NCAA who has gotten less out of his 5* players than Haase.

Sweet mercy it is over, 68-64.  I feel like Stanford basketball is like one of those mythical punishments, like water for tantalus or Prometheus getting his liver eaten every day or Sisyphus Rolling the boulder up the mountain.  They are just good enough to get you interested but bad enough to always break your heart.

Totally agree
They “close” as in Coach Shaw terminology
They “competitive” in that and $5 buys you a latte at Starbucks

I’d love to see Coach Haase in presser say “We’re only one 5* recruit away from winning PAC-12”

I hate to admit this, but Hurley is a far better coach than Haase.  ASU ran *actual plays* on offense.  We can only dream of that level of offensive competence under Haase.

Also, if the Stanford continues to not take transfers, and every other P-12 team gets to reload every single season like ASU did, I'm going to give up watching college sports.  It's like if your favorite pro football team decided to sign no free agents--good luck winning more than a few games the next season.

What “actual plays” did they run?  Basketball is more about “sets” than plays.  And transition.

A bunch of pick and rolls plus several backdoor cuts.  We could not defend the pick and roll at all.

Russell Turner is going to be in the area next Thursday, when his Anteaters are in the South Bay to play a road game at Santa Clara. His UCI team already has a road win over Oregon this season.

We should consider hiring him before he gets away back down to Irvine.

Should have hired him last year, or the year before that, or the year before that

We actually took a 1 pt lead at 51-50 and then stopped scoring (mostly).

After watching the women dismantle Gonzaga with bomb after bomb, watching the men clank shot after shot is so...ugh.

Theoretically we have some outside
shooters but it seems that clanking is contagious.  =/

I asked GPT-3 to produce a lymeric.  Needs some work…

Quote:Coach Haase of Stanford's team
Was the reason their play was a scream
His strategies were flawed
Their offense just floored
And their defense was just a bad dream

RE: Isn't there a basketball game on now - SkiBum80 - 12-05-2022

With apologies to BC & Edward Lear:

There once was an old coach named Haase
Who back as a player ran fast
But he grew a bit older
And his team bus did pull over
For alas it ran clean outta gas

Stanford will miss you as a fan then because there is no way Stanford will take transfers in numbers to meet the needs or desires of multiple coaches in this new transfer portal world.

Many schools have as many incoming transfers each fall as they have incoming freshmen.   In a number of those universities transfer students actually have inferior high school academic resumes compared to their incoming freshmen peers.    So it is not difficult at all for schools that admit thousands of transfers to admit a couple of dozen football players and perhaps a few dozen athletes in other sports.

The 2021-2022 Common Data Set reveals Stanford admitted 55 students.   Not 55 students for sports, 55 total.
For 2020-2021 the number was 86.   And those are big numbers presumably aided by COVID-19 enrollment disruptions.
For 2019-2020 it was 24.
For 2018-2019 it was 27.
For 2017-2018 it was 31.
For 2016-2017 it was 42.

I just can't imagine Stanford University would double that number just to admit replacement athletes for sports teams.

And then there is the admissions complexity.   At a lot of schools the coach can shop the portal and more or less offer a spot to an athlete in real time.   At Stanford the athlete in the portal would still need to complete some form of application.   That real admissions process can't be appealing for those seeking to leave a program ASAP.    I would think most want to get real offers in mere weeks and then take an offer as quickly as possible.

Just for comparison for 2021-2022
UofA - 5,907 admitted transfer applicants
Colorado - 3,135 admitted transfer applicants
USC - 2,208 admitted transfer applicants

For schools admitting thousands of students, it really is not a big deal to fast track admissions for a few dozen athletes.

FWIW - For hoops I don't think the transfer portal is quite as powerful for men's hoops as it has been in football.  Even first year college basketball athletes can opt for the draft, or pursue international opportunities.   And the prevalence of one and done types gives those that stay in a program for a couple of years a pretty decent shot at meaningful playing time.   There are quite a few programs that routinely get into the second or third round of the NCAA tournament with scrappy players that execute a system with incredible precision.

The men's hoops team almost can't get better recruits than Haase has been getting over the last few cycles.   Muir, who came in with high profile hoops experience, should be able to assess the situation on the court.

I really hoped the trends were obvious over the last 3 seasons, but perhaps it will take an absolute dumpster fire of a season to clarify the situation for Muir.

RE: Isn't there a basketball game on now - CardinalLover413 - 12-05-2022

While there are some talented guys on this team, I just feel like there isn't enough playmaking and scoring from the guard position for the offense to run well. We have some guys at the 2-3-4 spots who can shoot, but without somebody who can break down a defense, it doesn't really matter

RE: Isn't there a basketball game on now - M T - 12-05-2022

Excuse the math, but I always wondered what was the impact of the different sized balls for the men and the women.  Please correct me if I screw up here.

Inside diameter of the hoop is 18".  Women's ball has a circumference of 28.5 to 29" ( 9.07 - 9.23" diameter) and weighs 18 to 20 oz.  Men's ball has a circumference of 29.5 to 30" (9.39 - 9.55" diameter) and weighs 20 to 22 oz.     For a ball entering at a 60 degree downward slant, the 18" is the hypotenuse of the 30-60-90 triangle, so to be a swish, the ball has to go through an ellipse with a minor axis of 18 * cos (30deg) = 15.59"  and a major axis of 18". (Minor axis corresponds to front-to-back; major axis is side-to-side.) To be a swish, the path of the center of the ball has to go through the smaller ellipse with the diameter of the ball subtracted from both axes.
For the women's ball (29"), that is 6.36 x 8.77" which has an area of 175.2 sq inches.
For the men's ball (30"), that is 6.04 x 8.45", which has an area of 160.3 sq inches.

So, the women have 9.3% bigger target to hit to get a swish.  (This is applicable to any swish shot, but assumes a downward angle that I would associate with 3pt shots.  It is not applicable if the ball touches the rim.)

This team still does not "have the talent."
