At some point players like this ought to ask themselves whether it's more important to them to be paid a spectacular amount of money or to be on a team with a strong enough roster to win a Super Bowl.

The 49ers just made room salary wise for Bosa. Lance to Dallas for a 4th round pick

My exact thought, Bob!

And McCaffrey can now wear #5...

Really hate trading Lance to Dallas when Niners could have had Micah Parsons instead of Lance.

Wait. What?!? Weren't you leading the "Niners couldn't have improved their team if they hadn't picked Trey" parade just yesterday? Didn't I suggest they could have had Micah for half the price? Good lord.

Did I say I would have taken Parsons instead of a QB? No, I did not. And for the record, I wanted Justin Fields. But I have never thought the Lance trade and pick was a bad choice at the time.

I don't like trading Lance to Dallas for a 4th rd pick, especially because if they didn't trade for Lance they could have taken Parsons not giving up any picks. But again, they couldn't afford more first rd picks anyway. They had to get rid of some of them so they could afford more proven players.

Pure speculation.  We will never know how the draft would have played out had the Lance trade not occurred.  To suggest Parsons would have been available at #12 is unknown.  Besides, hindsight is a waste of time. You get one chance to make a decision. You make it, you live with it. No looking back. No what if’s…….

Regardless, I like the trade with Dallas.  They treated Lance fairly by sending him to a good team, they got a decent choice in return and they helped their cap situation a bit (not much - still lots of dead money this year and next).

It's not that complicated.

First rd picks cost a lot of money. When you don't have them you can pay other more proven more, be they your own draft picks or free agents.

The Lance situation is weird because the Niners have otherwise religiously only paid for proven very good players. They chose to pay about the most unproven guy they could in Lance. The move might have made sense, but it absolutely deviated from their doctrine otherwise. So I guess it makes sense that Lance didn't work out. But the injuries he sustained really couldn't be factored into the equation when deciding to draft him.

I don't see how Dallas is a better situation for Lance. He's gonna be #3 there this year just like with Niners. And he's not gonna be anything better than #2 in Dallas next year as Prescott has a $60M cap hit in 2024. So really, all that is happening is Lance is getting a change of scenery. He's not gonna have his 5th year option picked up next year, so he'll be a free agent in 2025, able to pick where he wants to go, possibly never having started more than 5 games.

Whatever, the James Wiseman analogy is now complete.

Okay, guess I'm a simpleton

First rd picks cost a lot of money. When you don't have them you can pay other more proven  more, be they your own draft picks or free agents.
Then why don't teams trade their first round picks every year if they aren't worth it?

The Lance situation is weird because the Niners have otherwise religiously only paid for proven very good players. They chose to pay about the most unproven guy they could in Lance. The move might have made sense, but it absolutely deviated from their doctrine otherwise. So the Niners historically only pay for proven very good players. How many of these first round draft picks were "proven" at the time. I assume the Niners paid them? Eric Reid, 2013; Jimmie Ward, 2014; Arik Armstead, 2015; DeForest Buckner and Joshua Garnett, 2016; Solomon Thomas and Rueben Foster, 2017; Mike McGlinchey, 2018; Nick Bosa, 2019; Javon Kinlaw and Brandon Aiyuk, 2020; Trey Lance, 2021. Only one I think not still in the league. Three others considered busts. Overall pretty good picks in the first round that you so disdain. Oh, and a quote from pre-draft 2021: ". . . I feel like the Niners are getting a shot at an elite QB for almost nothing. Of course you always want your first round pick, but everything costs something." Wonder who said that?

I don't see how Dallas is a better situation for Lance. He's gonna be #3 there this year just like with Niners. And he's not gonna be anything better than #2 in Dallas next year as Prescott has a $60M cap hit in 2024. So really, all that is happening is Lance is getting a change of scenery. Actually, he was number 4 with the Niners according to recent reports. . ..

Whatever, the James Wiseman analogy is now complete.
Huh? I'm not an avid fan of the NBA, so I don't recall, how many picks did the Warriors give up to trade up for Wiseman? Not a lot of household names in the 2020 NBA draft anyway. . . .

Given Prescott’s health history, Lance may get some playing time this year, definitely next.

Correct, that is why I say “may” this year.  Next year, Lance will be #2 since the contract Rush signed is easy to terminate after this season.

My suspicion is this whole thing went down like this:

- Niners signed Darnold not knowing when Purdy would be back
- Lance and Darnold were told it is open competition for #1 until Purdy is back
- Purdy came back sooner than expected and was made #1 because neither Lance or Darnold did enough competing for #1 to show they were better that Purdy
- Lance and Darnold were then told they were in competition for #2
- Darnold beat out Lance for #2
- Lance asked to be traded if the Niners could find a place for him
- The Niners, being a player-friendly organization decided to look around and see what they could get
- The best offer was a 4th rd pick for Lance and his full contract, so they acted in their own interest (as they should)
- The fact it was to a team where he would be #3 again is a risk Lance took when asking to be traded
- Seems safe to assume Lance was thinking he could at least get a #2 job this year when he asked for trade

IOW, I can't see Lance being too happy being #3 somewhere else. At least the Niners liked him and felt some kind of loyalty to him in the sense they wanted him to succeed since they gave up so much to get him. He will not have that dynamic in Dallas. They will cut him in a heart beat, whereas the Niners would be more patient.

Moreover, Darnold is also on a one year deal and will be a free agent too. And, Dallas right now has more money allocated to QBs in 2024 than any team in the NFL, a full 28% of projected salary cap. Meanwhile, the Niners right now (without Darnold signed) have less than 1% of cap allocated to QBs in 2024.

Though I think you missed the mention above that, according to multiple reports, Brandon was ahead of Trey, making Trey #4 with the Niners.

I watched Lynch's presser and speculate the Niners didn't really want to trade Lance but did so because they like being player-friendly and he asked. It is also my speculation that the Niners acted 100% in their own interest from that point forward and that Lance didn't expect to be traded somewhere he'd be #3 again. He may even have regrets about his destination.

As for Allen being better, that's not supported by what I've seen them do in the pre-season games. And nobody I know has suggested Brandon Allen is better than Trey Lance. That seems like crazy talk to me.

If Niners do feel Allen is better than Lance, Kyle Shanahan should be hired as CEO of every failing company looking for funding. Nobody has ever made a failure sound so promising.

Dallas is a good spot for Lance - zero pressure and a chance to move past a journeyman without strong credentials once he gets acclimated to the Cowboy system.

I would not be surprised to see Lance as the #2 by the end of the season.

Well, in the final pre-season game, Will Grier played the whole game for Cowboys:

29-35 305 8.5 YPA 2TD 0 INT 122 Rtg
Also 10 rushes for 53 yards and 2 TDs

Trey Lance could only dream of this kind of stat line. Based on this one game only, not only will Lance not be #2 in Dallas, he might not even be the 3rd best QB they have.

Again, based on this one game, Dallas will have to cut a guy (Grier) who is better than who they just traded a 4th rd pick to get, and who costs much more than Grier.

Maybe the Niners can pick up Grier from Dallas when they have to cut him, or maybe they can trade the 4th they got from Dallas back to them for Grier, and the teams will have effectively just swapped Lance for Grier.

I don't like trading Lance to Dallas for a 4th rd pick, especially because if they didn't trade for Lance they could have taken Parsons not giving up any picks. But again, they couldn't afford more first rd picks anyway. They had to get rid of some of them so they could afford more proven players.
My head is spinning so much, I feel like Linda Blair. . . .

Given Prescott’s health history, Lance may get some playing time this year, definitely next.

Prescott is only signed through next season and his cap figure is ENORMOUS ($59.4 million, though he will make $29 million). He's 30. He's had injuries to his ankle, calf (strain) and right thumb. He's had legal issues.

Multiple sources claim that Dallas had graded out Lance as a second round talent...still high for a quarterback, and one who could fit into the system that Dak Prescott runs.
