First time since seeding began, a number one hasn't made it to the elite eight. Wow. What a tournament. This will be a season when the grandmother who picks teams on the basis of colors or mascots wins your pool.

Gonzaga and Drew Timme take on UConn and Adama Sanogo tonight. It's a contest of dominant post players we haven't seen in college basketball for a long time. It's been what, since Anthony Davis at Kentucky that there was a truly dominant big man in college hoops, and when have two great post players recently faced off in college basketball?
Timme is sort of a modern day Kevin McHale, just an absolute post playing savant. Sanogo doesn't have Timme's array of moves and instead overpowers opponents with his size and strength.
Interestingly, these guys are seen as late 2nd round picks in the NBA prospect universe because neither one is an elite athlete, but that shouldn't take away from the intrigue of this match-up.
UConn looks to be the deepest team left in the tournament, and is my favorite to win it all, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprise to see Gonzaga win tonight, and someone other than Gonzaga cutting down the net.

As the tourney advances, most of the teams I want to advance have lost. Teams that I now prefer win the championship are San Diego State and FAU. Creighton is ok. Yukon looks strong, but don't want them to win it. Prefer Miami don't win it, nor Texas (Director's Cup).

Wow, SDS plays great defense. Hadn't seen them this year. And, Matt Bradley, the transfer from Cal two years ago, scored 2 or 4 points, and most of his shots weren't that close. Matt Bradley, but yes, he wasn't on the floor in the closing minutes. Seems to be struggling a bit offensively.

We hosted the Aztecs earlier this year. I was at Maples to watch the game. SDS was clearly the better team, but the difference was not that great on that particular day.
We lost 74-62. They shot 51%, but we held Mensah to 2 points, Bradley to 7, Arop to 6, Seiko to 8, and Trammel to 6. Keefe was starting then. Spencer went 4/15 and MJones was held scoreless.

The people who pick by color or cool sounding mascots always win our pool.
Three of us teamed up this year and turned our stochastic rainfall model into a massive tournament Monte Carlo simulation using a matrix of power indices for teams rather than historical rainfall distributions. Played the tournament 100,000 times on three machines starting the Monday after Selection Sunday. Houston was the expected winner over Alabama. The remainder of our Final Four consisted of Marquette and Gonzaga. I'm sure in the rush to enter the matrices we did something stupid like move the decimal place a la Michael Bolton in Office Space.....
I'm rooting for SDSU v. UCONN in the final for the Marin angle, with SI (Darrion Trammell) beating Marin Catholic (Joey California). Also no team located west of the 100th Meridian has won a title since Arizona in '97. I don't think I would watch an intra-swamp-state battle on Monday.
ACC did continue its 40 plus year streak of having at least one team in the Sweet Sixteen, so Da U has some worth this year.

How many 2nd team All Americans in the Final Four? None
How many 3rd team All Americans in the Final Four? None
Wong from Miami and Sanogo from UConn were honorable mention AP AA.
Oh and from what I can tell there are no 5 star recruits or McDonalds All Americans in the Final Four either.
I also found it interesting to note that 16 different teams have been represented in the last 4 Final Fours.

One year we had a new Japanese structural engineering graduate join the firm, she knew nothing about basketball, let alone the post season tournament, she really wanted to learn about American culture, so she entered the office pool, smoked everybody. Her methodology was how cute the uniforms were that the cheerleaders wore. Then the Super Bowl came and once again she smoked everybody once again. She got the correct score, which she arrived at by the jersey number of the cutest player on each team. She took her winnings and donated to a scholarship fund for local high school students.

That's what she told everybody. What she didn't tell you was that she had access to the Fugaku supercomputer, and used it to make her predictions...

What an amazing comeback by possible future PAC-12 member San Diego State against Florida Atlantic. They trailed all of the second half, by as many as 14 points, and finally took the lead on a buzzer beater.
Of course, if they hadn’t missed 8/11 free throws at one point, they wouldn’t have needed the buzzer beater.

Lamont Butler, who hit the game winning shot, was offered by Stanford. He would have been a big upgrade over what Stanford put on the court at guard this season.
SDSU beat Stanford early in the season. They played well but I didn't see a Championship game participant.
