I read somewhere that LSU was doling out big money to baseball players. Also, maybe Montgomery didn't like DHing for most of the tournament, or maybe he doesn't see Stan bb going very far next year, or...In any event, too bad. An excellent player and good Stan representative. Also, not real surprised.

Is Braden giving up his degree?

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - cardfan77 - 07-11-2023

It appears so, sadly

Oh no, you just reminded me of his throwing error costing us the game against Rice and ultimately the CWS tittle.

They won with him in that role because they needed both his arm and his bat. He was back in the field in the CWS, so I am sure it is money. If I were Rodney Green at Cal, I would enter the portal. Only 1 player drafted out of Cal this year.

There really is no reason Stanford and alumni can't compete in this NIL environment.  People would pay big bucks for a national championship contending men's bball, baseball, and football team.

While I agree that it would make little logical sense that this transfer was spurred by a few games as DH so that he could pitch if necessary (and not cost Stanford the DH position), I don't think that the conclusion is therefore to be sure it is money.

It could be any of a thousand things, including many that aren't logical. Of course, money is a strong possibility and Bobbk might actually know something behind his comment above.

Sadly it is money. Lots of money. I’m not going to say more however. Other than not a surprise

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - Maple Leaf - 07-12-2023

Gee why do I get the idea that LSU has a shopping list of players they would like to have for their athletic teams.  Can't wait until pro teams start complaining about NIL's out bidding them for players and that NIL's need to have cap.

Or perhaps LSU and its ilk lobbying the NCAA to allow players to play even after they use up their eligibility? I mean we aren't even really talking about having college sports anymore.

I posted on here months ago how the SEC needs to become its own thing apart from the NCAA and I don't know if anyone agreed. Now that we've seen what LSU is doing, I wonder if minds have been changed?

What kind of pro sports thing would the SEC turn into if not having to be bothered by the fact there is a school and education involved somehow with the brands in the league?

Stanford players in the portal (according to D1Baseball)

Gargus
Hinkelman
Montgomery
Pancer
Meier
Mathews (irrelevant)
Fleischli

Pancer would sting.

Pancer? Jesus, I hate the f'ing portal. Assuming one of the two freshmen pitchers is a weekend starter and the other is the midweek starter, who among guys who have any experience for us will be in the bullpen? All I can think of is Uber, O'Rourke (assuming he's 100% healthy), and O'Harran (who has a live arm but hasn't figured out how to use it.)

Even though I have a lot of faith in Esquer, it's hard for me to see this being much more than an average team next year.

P.S. Anyone want to hazard a guess how much Pancer is being offered to play elsewhere?

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - cardfan77 - 07-14-2023

I can’t imagine anyone offering Pancer top dollars  that is worth giving up a Stanford degree. But then again, I value a Stanford degree much more than others.

Mathews has signed for $600K. Congrats

Mathews signed with the team that drafted him. St Louis
Graham and Dixon have also signed pro contracts

Matthews signed for over his pick value, Dixon and Graham a little under.

Matthews    Pick #122   Bonus $600,000   Value $541,700
Dixon         Pick #224   Bonus $218,800   Value $221,300
Graham      Pick #228   Bonus $212,900   Value $215,400

--------------------------
On another matter, of the 7 players from Stanford reported to be in the transfer portal, 5 are seniors who one would not expect to see much playing time at Stanford next year (4 because they never have so far, 1 because he's going to be a pro). Assuming they graduate(d), I wouldn't actually consider them transfers at all - i.e. when I started grad school I didn't consider myself to be transferring out of Stanford, merely starting something new.

The other 2 would sting for fans, one a lot the other a little. It's less than the average effect across the NCAA, where division 1 baseball teams average nearly 10 transfer portal entries. Of course the competitive problem for Stanford is that it is pretty much a one-way flow; Stanford has had a few grad transfers in recent years but none who had a real impact.

I see Stanford is getting a rising Soph pitcher
