Time for him and all other starters to sit to be safe. Glad to see he's ok though.
SC might be a slaughter next week.

SC didn't exactly look great against SJ State. Granted, we are probably not the strongest team, but I expect we can at least keep it close for 3 quarters.

Wow. Lt. full time intelligence officer, full time student and playing football. That’s impressive.
Nice win.

Very solid debut game of the new era, beating the margin by more than the oddsmakers and Bill Connelly predicted. The depth isn't where it was during the Harbaugh or Shaw eras but the coaching looks solid.

Agree.

OK, Checklist, as forecast: Stanford WIN ✓ Covered the 3 point spread on road.
Score prediction at 38-20. Good. [FINAL at 37-24, and not that close]
DETAILS
1. Stanford Defense in good shape. ✓
2. Pressure on Schager, 5 sacks. ✓
Edger Bailey was outstanding.
3. Contain HRW RBs, Tynes. ✓
4. Good mix of Run / Pass ✓
Daniels showed versatility.
5. Plenty of Cowbell (Yurosek) ✓
led all receivers.
What do the Naysayers tell us now?
I thought Schager was going to throw INTs... but HRW gave us 11 penalties
OK, yeah -- #6 USC will be a much tougher test, no question. Their passing attack is monstrous, NFL caliber.

Agree. The depth was much deeper in 2007 for Harbaugh.

On the other hand, Ashton Daniels hasn't (as of yet) induced Jason Forcier flashbacks.
We've heard that Coach Taylor aims to have a passing QB and a running QB and he has only shown us one of them. Are we sure Daniels is the passing QB? He threw for 249 and two TDs but also had 11 rushes.

So what was up with the Stanford RB situation? Is EJ Smith being rested for U$C? Or is Filkins the man going forward? He looked the part with the 47 yd long rush, but Ryan Butler and EJ also got meaningful snaps.

Pleased with what I saw. Players looked like they were engaged, playing hard, and having FUN (think of that! a Stanford team that was having fun!). At the time of his transfer, I thought that Ryan Butler might be an impact player for us. He was our most productive RB tonight. I hope he gets used more and more. Daniels looked good and the whole team played with tempo and purpose. Bailey and Yurosek were the best defensive and offensive players on the field.
I have two main concerns: run blocking and the secondary.

Solid debut. My first impression was that the players showed more energy and intensity than in the waning stretch of the Shaw era. Execution is still not as crisp as it could be, but Hawaii helped us out by making plenty of their own errors and committing a bunch of penalties. No stand-out running back, despite the long run by Filkins. Yurosek and Bailey jointly deserve the game ball. And Karty, as usual, was Mr. Reliable.
Looking forward, I don't think we stand a chance against USC (unless, of course, Taylor has some secret weapon he declined to show this week). As the season progresses, I will be interested to see how injuries take their toll. Obviously, I am hoping that the S&C program has vastly improved and that the roster isn't threadbare by game 7.
Good to see a team that, despite its apparent deficiencies, is playing with fresh energy and shows a lot up upside.

My take-away: I haven't been this optimistic since Bryce Love was 100%. It's nice to see a well coached team. Good athletes. Depth will be an issue for another couple of years but this thing is finally turned around. Thanks, coach. Hope you hang around a while.
