Is there any argument to let him continue coaching Stanford Basketball that can't easily be refuted?

None that I'm aware of. He should have been fired at the end of last season.

Every Stanford MBB thread since 2017 can be distilled to this (correct) comment.

Hopefully we won't still be making it in 2025.

2017??  Oh, that's right, the year after we fired the coach who took us to the Sweet 16 [beating Kansas in the process] and two post-season NIT titles.  Smart move...  In the years since, of course, we've had amazing post-season success.  Oh, wait...

It's all Dawkins' fault.

Dawkins was let go because the players and their parents went to Muir and forced his hand. Mediocre coach at Stanford and a mediocre one at UCF.
That said Haase is a worse coach than Dawkins and while his players have not rebelled they simply transferred. The defections out of the program have been staggering.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - Mick - 11-22-2024

Stanford (5-0) vs. Santa Clara (2-3) tomorrow night at the Leavey Center on the Santa Clara campus.

SCU lost to Arizona State 81-74 and North Dakota State 88-80, crunched by Nevada-Reno, 85-59.

They have a decent 6'7" French guard, Adama-Alpha Bal, transfer from Arizona, All-WCC last year. 7' German center, Christophe Tilly, HM All-WCC last year. 6'10" forward, Johnny O'Neill, had a good game vs. Stanford last year with 17 points and 8 rebounds. I thought he'd take off after that.

Not much beyond those three. Canadian JC transfer F Elijah Mahi, scores well, no D. Carlos Stewart is interesting...first-team All-WCC two years ago, transferred to LSU, played less than half the season, hurt his knee, transferred back. He was a good shooter. Still trying to find his way. Tyree Bryan, feast-or-famine guard.

No line on the game, but I'd be shocked if Stanford doesn't win by at least 15.

Stanford -1.5.

I would be (very pleasantly) shocked if we DO win by at least 15.

That seems absurdly close.

Enjoying the STANFORD vs. Cal game right now. Feel free to come up and say hello during the basketball game. I'll be the one wearing the SC hat... ;)

The line moved. Apparently the big money liked Santa Clara - they are now favored by 1.

Complete disrespect to Stanford. But how many years has it been since Stanford started the season 6-0?

Still, I think Stanford is going to stomp Santa Clara.

Maybe the punters were onto something.  Stanford trails SCU 37-27 at the half.

We're lucky to be down by just 10.  Raynaud was great.  Literally everything else about Stanford has been terrible so far.  Defense.  Spacing.  Shot selection.  You name it.

Officiating sucks something awful too.  Multiple muggings of Raynaud not called, and probably half of our fouls are of the ticky-tackiest sort.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - Canalejas - 11-23-2024

It turned out to be not quite the worst day possible.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - PVTree - 11-23-2024

Hu-ge comeback in the last minutes to win by 2.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - TheFarm07 - 11-23-2024

We rally from 8 down with just 3:30 on the clock to stun Santa Clara 71-69; it did not look like we were going to mount any sort of comeback in the previous few minutes, with errant passes, missed assignments and missed FTs.

Somehow, we got it together and Sellers made some clutch shots to tie the game and we managed to get the decisive, final edge.

76lsjumb - 76lsjumb - 11-23-2024

C’mon. It’s been over a minute and no post?  6-0 baby!!!

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - Mick - 11-23-2024

Santa Clara built a nice halftime lead, Stanford roared back in the second half to win 71–69.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - SkiBum80 - 11-23-2024

The Haasian infection remains stubborn in this team. But at least for today, Coach Smith had just enough antidote to barely overcome it.

76lsjumb - 76lsjumb - 11-23-2024

By the way, Tony Padilla is the worst ref in college basketball, or, if not, pretty close.

Sure, 6-0 with the softest schedule possible. Santa Clara is a solid program with a great coach, but literally the only half-decent team we've played. The others might as well have been community college teams.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan (of course) and I like Kyle Smith. But Muir did his best to destroy the program and we're not at all a good team. I say "Muir" intentionally because it's not Haase's fault that despite his utter incompetence he kept the job for as long as he did. No one expected him to resign (well, Shaw apparently did but at that point he was protecting his "legacy.") Anyway, in terms of minutes we lost 6 of our top 7 guys, and 9 of our top 10 I believe, based on transfers and graduation. Losing Angel and Stojakovic really hurt. It will take Smith a while to rebuild, assuming he can.

Someone remind me: how does Muir still have a job at Stanford?

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - BostonCard - 11-23-2024

Down 8 with 3:25 to go… we end on a 12-2 run to win.

Sellers hits a 3 to get us within 5.  Then with 1:30 to go Blakes gets a steal, passes to Sellers and we are now within 3. Next possession, Sellers hits another 3 to tie it.  Santa Clara hits 1 of 2 free throws, and Reynaud puts us up by 1 with 30 seconds left.  Santa Clara misses on the next possession and Sellers nabs the rebound but misses the front end of a one-and-one.  Reynaud nabs the offensive rebound, but misses the shot.  Sellers then fouls Tilly, and he goes 1/2 on the line to tie it at 69 with 8 seconds left.  Blakes then hits the winning shot with 2 seconds to go, and All Right Now.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - old spanish trail - 11-23-2024

First time I've watched this year. Reynaud is much improved; stronger, more body control, patrols the paint without fouling, and an even wider variety of shots. I think he has a shot at NBA if he wishes. Sellers, junior transfer from USC, is good all around and Blakes, 5th year from Duke, is better than McConnell at the point. Blakes and Sellers hit a couple threes, and Agarwal as well, but I didn't see a reliable sniper like the Joneses, when they were on. Agarwal could become that guy but he floats a bit right now. I read Gealer had a big night shooting threes, but didn't see that tonight.

They are organized on D and play hard. Fast, quick guards will give us trouble as Blakes, Sellers and Gealer lack great quicks on D. The guards of the ACC will be a challenge.
