A disappointing game in which several of our players did not play well. Iriafen and Demetre should get kudos for keeping us in the game.

The one positive is that the meltdown did not go the way of Gonzaga. After we fell behind by 17 points we scratched back to single digits and threatened to make it competitive. That shows some growth since Spokane.

We regard to my earlier remark--in no way do I disagree with MV and others that Brink's undisciplined fouls were bad, especially considering her importance and the amount of coaching that has gone into trying to teach her how to control them. Despite a double-double, criticism is justified. I think my reaction is more a matter of tone and balance.

Let's also give Colorado some credit. We shot 34% today, probably our lowest of the season. At Gonzaga we actually shot well despite the meltdown. Payne has always known exactly how to disrupt our offense. Usually we disrupt their offense just as much and typically win in a low scoring game. But Colorado has the experience and talent they have never had before, and our defense is not what it sometimes has been in past years--and Colorado, playing at home, was the better team today. I think we can learn from this and defeat them in a future tournament.

Three starters had a combined seven points.

Add in eighteen turnovers, and there is no way you win with numbers like that.

I'm happy with a weekend split. Colorado is really good and they were fired up to play this game. We had opportunities. Our perimeter players struggled big time. We're not built to come back from big deficits. I wish we would have changed up our defense more often and had more success getting the ball inside.
Fast break points: 22-3 Colorado
Points of turnovers: 28-11 Colorado
Points in the paint: 30-18 Colorado
Those are three telling stats that we can't lose to that degree if we want to win against great teams.

Well shoot. Nothing went our way today, but that's what a good team will do to you, especially on their court. Thoughts:

1) I thought it was a great environment and kudos to the Buffs. I don't think they played any sort of "dirty basketball" as some have posted re: past games with them. The won it fair and square, and really owned our guards. Give the game ball to Kendyll Wetta and Maddie Nolan. They did everything - defended like mad, steals, boards..Between the two of them - 24 points on 8-12 (4-6 from 3), 11 boards (as guards), 11 assists, 5 steals, sheesh. Throw in Sherrod's 13 points, 4 steals, 4 assists...dominant guard play from Colorado.
2) My least favorite layer in the P12 is now Char Whittaker. My goodness what a flop artist. She even tried to flop when Cam patted her on the back during a dead ball. Again, can any of you refs, please, any one of you, just call a flop warning? It would change everything.
3) Not really fair to diss on Cam after 12 pts, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks (could have sworn I saw 7+, never have understood the block stats sometimes), but it comes with the territory of being a superstar. She wasn't her typical energetic self and didn't have her head in the game given such 3 silly swipe fouls. It was a 4 point game when she hammered Formann. To me, it looked like she succumbed to the pressure of the game. Haven't seen that before from Cam and it really sent the wrong message to the team. That's when the game got away from us. It went to 49-37 in the next minute and a half.
4) Looked to me like the altitude + fatigue from the Utah game really took it's toll. We just looked tired and a step slow. Both Kiki and Cam missed a multiple easy layups and struggled to finish through contact.
5) So happy that Lepolo actually attacked the basket twice in the second half. She made the first shot. The second one was a little wild, but hey - at least she tried! Maybe she can find her confidence to do it more. She has the ability. Also wanted to mention that she had ZERO turnovers and played 39 minutes (after 40 at Utah). Warrior.
6) How about that Jaz? 24 minutes, 9 points, FIVE boards. And she battled. She has emerged as a real threat. At the moment, I have way more confidence with her on the floor than Bosgana. She obviously has to clean up the turnovers, but I'll tolerate a couple if she plays like that.

All in all a pretty valuable road trip. We got a win at Utah, learned a lot, and a bunch of other good stuff happened. Can't say I'm that surprised we lost at Colorado. Hope we meet in the P12 tourney. Maybe by then our guards will have matured enough to handle their pressure a bit better and we can exact some revenge.

Well damn. We got outplayed and I didn't think that the defense this year was dirty with the exception of Whittaker. (See below.) Agree that the game was lost at the guard position. Unfortunately, that is historically Stanford's weakness when faced with fast guards and swarming defenses. I do think that this group has the skill to grow and be much better against similar teams later in the year.

Cam being out of the game for as long as she was also hurt us because she wasn't able to be a major contributor and this team will only go as far as she takes us.

As for Whittaker, I completely agree. In addition to the thunder flops, I thought she should have been called for a flagrant 1 or 2 in the first half when she and Kiki fell in the paint. It looked to me like Whittaker fell after fairly rough but normal jostling. She then lifted her leg and purposely tripped Kiki as Kiki was trying to step over her. It was a classic Draymond kind of move and should have been treated the same. Whittaker had the audacity to act like she had been fouled. What a jerk.

Hopefully the team grows from this and handles other top ten matchups better. Looking forward to Tara breaking the record.

As much trouble as Colorado regularly gives Stanford, this was only their 2nd win over the Cardinal since they joined the conference.

I thought I explained that in the last game. When a foul is called (whistle & raise hand) by the ref is the key, not when contact first happens. If the foul is called before the ball leaves the hand, then no points. If it is called after, then the points count.

At one point, when I looked at Sling's schedule (maybe 12:40), it showed I had 3 shows currently recording on the P12BAHD channel at once (scheduled 11AM-12, 12-12:30, 12:30-1). I don't know how/why some record longer than scheduled. I was watching somewhat behind live, so I stayed off the Cardboard. The recording went wonky at some point. When I checked after 1:30PM, Sling only had two recordings, shown as recording different times. (Btw, these recordings are not made at my house, they are made by Sling, stored in their cloud.)

But on both those streams, with about 5 minutes left in Q4, the video wouldn't proceed. When I fast forwarded past that point and came back, it appears the video was overlaid (or was it in the live broadcast?) with the start of the game as though they restarted the broadcast.

Bleech.... Since Stanford had made progress to catching up, I decided to record the 5:30PM replay and watch it then. Oh well....

Since no one else complained, I figure this wasn't a PAC-12.com problem. I'm guessing that the Sling broadcast was ok, and that it was a recording issue.

Gosh, if they were different points, that would make a 48 point difference (80-32). We must have crushed them otherwise (27 - -9)
Must be double counting.

It isn't quite real, but take away the last 2 seconds of the first 3 quarters, Stanford would have been ahead 59-58 with 30 seconds left. The last 30 seconds would have been very different.

Looking at what was counted as FB points:
4 of the FB points were credited for FT on fouls in the back court by Stanford in the last 19 seconds of Q4. I don't think of those as FB points.
2 of the FB points were for the breakaway when Stanford loaded the back court on the CO throw-in with 26 seconds of Q4.
7 of the FB points were the last second shots at the end of the first 3 quarters.
That leaves 9 other FB points.

The FB points account for some of Colorado's higher FG% and all of their higher 3FG%.

So, if we can cut down on their end-of-quarter heroics and steals, that should make the difference. I'm sure the team will work on those. I'm not a fatalist; I do believe in the coach and the players, even the underclassmen (underclasswomen, who had 33% of the turnovers in 7% of the playing time).

You missed the point. I was calling BS because the foul was clearly after the shot was released, and the shot should have counted. They fixed it on review and got it corrected. I didn’t think they would review it.

You missed the point. I was calling BS because the foul was clearly after the shot was released, and the shot should have counted. They fixed it on review and got it corrected. I didn’t think they would review it.

As I saw it, the contact was clearly before the shot. I turned down the announcers before the end of the quarter, but I turned them back up there. They thought the foul (by which they mean the contact) was before the shot and so the score wouldn't count upon review. I was thinking you were believing the announcers who thought the score would be reversed, and calling such a theoretical reversal BS. (And, by the way, the score was counted initially (giving Stanford 52 points), and later reviewed, and confirmed.)

Anyway, same result. The points counted.

Yep
Cam's +/- stat: +6 [despite the team giving away points at the end due to the intentional fouling strategy]
Team's +/- with Cam on the bench: -18

With a team as competitive as Colorado, I would have like to have seen Tara gamble and play Cam more in the first half despite her 2 fouls. The team kept things competitive for a while (it was 28-28 with 2 minutes left in the 2nd quarter), but then Colorado went on an 8-2 run to finish the half. (Though subbing in Agara for Demetre at the 2 minute mark could have been more of a factor.)
