Stanford's opening game is no gimme. Norfolk State was 3rd in the country in scoring defense (53 points/game) and 6th in TOs forced (21.3/game). The toughest match ups for Stanford are teams that play pressure defense and force Stanford into turnovers or bad shots. That's how they lost to Mississippi last year. 21 TOs, shot less than 33%. Iowa State and Maryland are better match ups in this respect. Iowa State is 254th in scoring defense and Maryland is 324th. By the way, Stanford is one of the worst in the country at forcing TOs, 345th in the country (11.33/game). But Iowa State is even worse at 347th.
I don't know if the seeding is motivation or not. I don't know what motivates this team. I think they want to play hard each game. I think they try to play hard each game. But that means that it is hard to find a higher gear against a quality opponent which is what you need to be successful in the tournament. It might be that the team is just physically beat down at the end of a long, tough season.

Stanford plays Friday. If it’s like last season, they will play at 4:00pm. But in previous seasons, they have played the second game.

Norfolk State has a star point guard in Diamond Johnson (2020 Hoopgurlz #6) formerly at Rutgers and NC State. Will need Lepolo and Clardy to play their best D on her. But Norfolk St also lost by 30 to a pretty bad Minnesota team.

Yeah, when I saw Norfolk St as the #15, then against US, my stomach dropped. Watched their game yesterday against Howard and she was scary good. And the rest of the team was able to score seemingly willy-nilly. Haven't looked at the roster, but I'm guessing we have quite a height advantage if that's worth anything...

I am afraid there are a lot of teams out there who can cause us major problems. Any school with a couple of good, quick guards and play a pressing defense will give us fits, we have shown that enough times that it isn't a secret. Plus we can't have another game where we get out rebounded by 20. Kiki and Brink can only carry us so far against the high level teams we will face.

Stanford has had some really poor shooting quarters and halves lately.
vs. OSU (regular season) - 7 for 24 in the 1Q
vs. Oregon (regular season) - 6 for 17 in the 1Q
vs. Cal (P12 tournament) - 10 for 31 in the 1H
vs. OSU (P12 tournament) - 12 for 34 in the 1H
vs. USC (P12 tournament) - 12 for 26 in the 1H (better, the problem was they could not get stops on the other end)
Bad luck? A team that is offensively challenged? A team with tired legs? I do wish that the team had more speed and length on defense to force turnovers and get fast break points. That can really charge up an offense. But Stanford might get only 1 or 2 fast break buckets per game.

And on the tired legs question the answer is YES. At least for Lepolo, who is playing on a meniscus that needs to be scoped and seems to get worse after extended play.

I hope to see a lot more of Clardy AND Harriel. They both bring quick feet and hands that disrupt the other team and are offensive threats the opposition needs to defend

Agree. They are important to our success. However, neither of them is as good at staying in front of a quick, aggressive guard as Lepolo. She lacks the height to be a great defender but she is a better on ball defender than either Clardy or Harriel. They are better at steals and disruption but at this stage of their careers, not as good a defender as Lepolo. I expect Clardy to be s superb all around defender by her junior year, however.. as good as we have ever had. Well, except for Anna Wilson.
