First concert: Garden State Folk Festival circa '70 or '71. We did the pilgrimage back east with my baby sister, so my dying grandmother could meet her. They lived fairly close to Asbury Park and we went because my grandmother wanted to go. I think Richie Havens and The Byrds headlined. The only act I knew at all was Oscar Brand because we played one of his albums a lot.

First concert of free-will: The Association at Tomorrowland Pavilion in Disneyland. Would have been '81. I chose to sit there and listen rather than wait in the Space Mountain line with my friends to burn another E-ticket.

Best Concert: Allman Brothers at The (Fabulous) Fox Theatre in ATL. Great set, great venue, great date. My third month in the South, done right. So many great shows over the years within easy walking distance of our house.

Best Venue: Red Rocks. We used to hijack vests, hats, and theodolites and hang around just beyond the backstage "surveying" until dark when security wouldn't notice us. We'd hit two or three shows that way both summers I worked in Denver. I was working in Yellowstone NP for that U2 concert in the rain and missed it, but remember Stevie Ray Vaughn as an absolute standout. The acoustics while hiding backstage are not what they are out in the bowl, but still. A lot of firsts happened at Red Rocks and anyone who grew up in the Denver area knows what I'm talking about.

Concert I wish I had attended: Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads. It's cool on vinyl and my iphone and all, but I'd like to have been in LA rather than taking fall finals, which is I'm sure what I was doing at the time.

Worst Concert: tie between Jefferson Space/Starship and Mother's Finest early '80s in ATL. Also saw Sly and he was really Stoned or worse in NOLA, but that might be a club more than a concert.

Band I've seen the most: Probably San Francisco Symphony Orchestra or Elvin Bishop.

Last Concert: who knows? Probably mean most recent concert. Again, who knows? Pre-COVID and nothing definitively comes to mind. Maybe someone at the Mountain Winery. Band of Horses?

Worst concert: Stephen Stills at Mem Aud, Stanford 1979/80? (Stills was so wasted he could barely stand and was ushered off the stage after a half hour or so; I had really hoped there would be a Neil Young surprise visit, but Neil was smart enough to avoid this disaster) Honorable mention: Eric Clapton with Dave Mason where Clapton was way too far gone to make music, 1977ish

Band you've seen the most: Emerson, Lake & Palmer (or SF Symphony or NY Philharmonic)

Blue Man Group hearing My Chemical Romance's "Welcome to the Black Parade" is incredible. Not just because it's an iconic song and the Blue Man Group is unique, but the combo is out of this world, and really, really well done. Obviously, not as much commentary as usual, but the final result was extravagantly awesome.

I saw the Coldplay news. I hope they bring in their own A/V people because I have no faith in the stadium crew.
I can’t recall a concert at Stanford Stadium. I guess if you’re planning to host concerts, start with a massive act.

Time for me to chime in on this thread. My submission is a 1993 song by Rodney O and Joe Cooley from their album F_K New York. This West Coast rap group decided to dump their label and go it alone on their fourth album. They had to sell all of their cars and possession to afford to produce the album, but they were confident in their ability to do it themselves. The lyrics portray the profound East Coast bias against West Coast rappers, and has been specifically described as a diss track towards Tim Dog. The melody features a rhythmic samples from Zapp's More Bounce to the Ounce and Flashlight. The result is a straight-up dance jam that is perfect for popping and breaking.

Here are some interesting lyrics from the song:

"Time for me to kick another fly and funky verse, and if I die put a sound system in my hearst."

"I got a New York critic in a choke hold. He dissed my record 'cause he didn't like my bongos. Now I'm showing him the meaning of loco. I'm not friends with my peers so I'm overlooked. I've got the P-funk, fool, on the funky hook. I'm paying suckers back for all the years of dissing me, and now I'm rollin' and their ain't no stopping me."

Time to contribute my own memories ....

Your first concert: The Police: Ghost in the Machine Tour, Cow Palace 1982
This was probably the apex of the group's popularity with "Everything Little Thing she Does is Magic" peaking on the charts and before Sting broke away to go solo. Also rampant drug use everywhere. I think I got a contact high from the groups on either side of me both of which offered a group of kids to share their lines of cocaine, which we turned down. Yes, it WAS the early 80s.

Your best concert: The Pretenders: Greek Theater, 1984.
Went with my Stanford girlfriend and a KZSU DJ both of whom loved the group and particularly loved Chrissy Hynde. Chrissy and the band were GREAT that night and the concert was electric. I left a Pretenders die-hard which is either a testament to their charisma or to my girlfriend's contagious enthusiasm. Always fun to see a good band in the company of people that love them more than you.

The concert you wish you had attended: The Band, Last Waltz, Winterland, 1978
Love the album, love the guest appearances and love the vibe of the Scorsese presentation. It's maddening that I was so close-by although my 15 year old self probably lacked the context to really get it back then.

Concert that was way more fun that expected: I randomly walked by the New Varsity in the late 80s and heard Jazz music coming from the venue's courtyard. My date (and later wife) dropped in to listen for a bit and ended up replacing our plans with this impromptu concert. Turns out it was Tuck and Patty playing songs that would populate their debut album. They aren't a big group now and certainly weren't a big group back then but they were soulful, Jazzy, and romantic while seeming to thoroughly enjoy playing to an audience that was at most 40 people standing or sitting on folding chairs on late summer night in Palo Alto. (I think the late guitarist Michael Hedges also played that night.)

Worst concert: Elton John, don't remember where/when
One of his many farewell tours, same old songs but from horrid upper deck seats with a bad sound system that reached us just barely enough to hear Sir Elton's shot vocal chords. Luckily I'd seen him in better days (though even then not in his prime). Almost left early, should have left early

Band you've seen the most: Rascal Flatts,
Don't judge, my wife loves them.

Last concert: Rascal Flatts, Shoreline, maybe 2022? Not sure.
See above. Happy wife, happy life. The boys were getting a little thick around the middle but then so were we.

I'm not counting tribute bands I've seen recently that did pretty decent shows. TLR which plays good renditions of Eagles songs in small (ish) outdoor venues comes to mind. They’re the comfort food of live shows, dishing out authentic sounding versions of long-time favorites. Tribute band shows can be lots of fun without the drama and hassle of big arena shows. Sometimes a good, chicken marsala over fettucini is better than the trendy fare of the moment. Of course, they can also suck, so do your research and choose wisely.

Supposedly, that was the story behind Dire Straits' "Sultans of Swing", which depicts a real event. Mark Knoffler really was walking through South London in the rain and did hear a band playing jazzy tunes.

I'll steal your format:

Your first concert: Earth, Wind, and Fire at the Oakland Coliseum while an undergrad at Stanford (probably 1982). They were good.

Your best concert: Michael Jackson (Bad Tour) at the LA Sports Center, November 13, 1988. He was a great entertainer and performer.

Concert that was way more fun that expected: Actually, it's a concert that I never expected to attend. It was late summer afternoon in Paso Robles, CA, in 1991. I was walking among the exhibits at the California Mid-State Fair with a buddy of mine when someone asked us if we wanted to buy their tickets to the concert. We said "what concert?" They said that it was MC Hammer and it was starting in 10 minutes. We bought the tickets for $5 each and made our way to the seats, which were in the 4th row from the stage at the center. As a bonus, there were cute girls sitting in the seats to the left and to the right of our seats. The concert was Too Legit to Quit and at one point I counted 35 performers on the stage. No wonder the guy went bankrupt, paying all of those dancers.

Worst concert: George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic at the Santa Barbara Bowl. This was a rambling mumbling stoned out jam session for George.

Worst concert experience:  D.C. Throwdown With Rick James, July 1982, RFK Stadium, Washington DC. I was working as a summer intern for a Congressman and heard this concert being promoted on the radio. It was a 12 hour event and included, in addition to Rick James, One Way, Zapp, Ray Parker Jr., Cameo, War, Experience Unlimited, and Soul Sonic Force. I went by myself and was, by my visual experience, the only white person in the stadium. I took up a viewing location on the stadium floor (grass) to watch the show and the first bad experience was someone in the middle of the stadium firing a gun or firecrackers causing the people on the grass to stampede away from the sound. I was caught up in a wave of bodies that surged towards the stage. I managed to stay on my feet, but many went down and were trampled. It ended up with a crush of people from the fence in front of the stage and out about 20 yards. When things calmed down, I saw several people hauled away on stretchers and learned later that a pregnant teenager was killed in the crush.

It took about an hour before the concert resumed. Shortly thereafter, a man stepped in front of me and faced me. He told me to not look back, but that there was a man with a knife that was about to attack me. He said he would try to hold the guy off while I got away. I quickly moved away towards the stage and sneaked a glance back to where I had been standing. I saw the man who had warned me standing in front of a guy holding a knife looking at me with pure hate in his eyes. It was still daylight and Rick James was about to go on, so I quickly headed up into the mostly empty seats of the stadium. From there I watched Rick James and another group. While I was up there, there was another round of "booms" from the stadium floor and the crowd stampeded again. From above it was like watching rings of waves moving away from where a pebble is dropped in a pond. First I heard the booms, then I saw the wave of people moving away from a spot, then the sound of screams from the crowd. At that point it was starting to get dark and I decided that I wanted to live more than I wanted to see Zapp and Roger, so I got the hell out of there.

Band you've seen the most:  Ricky and the Redstreaks, just because they were the band that always played at the National Finals Rodeo afterparty at the Frontier in Las Vegas.

Well, I saw Carnifex at the El Corazon theater (referred to by the Maps app as a "dive bar") last night, which brings my total number of concerts up to two. Yeah, I'm boring, I know.

The other one was the U2 Elevation Tour in Anaheim in 2001. I would say that one was better. Carnifex was fronted by four lead-up acts, Heavy//Hitter, Organectomy, Mental Cruelty and Cryptopsy. I was hoping that World War X would be part of the repertoire but Carnifex never played it. Cads. I did get a nice Necromanteum T-shirt out of the deal.

It's funny, about twelve years ago there was a thread on the other site's CEB about how new music all sounded the same and was too loud. Well, the 40 or so songs played by above five aforementioned bands might as well have been the same song (except possibly "Hell Chose Me") and as for loud, well, my ears were paying me back for that show all day today. And yet I'm perfectly comfortable with heavy metal. What was implied but never outright stated back then, I now realize, is that the new music of that day had a whiny quality. And that's what really rubbed us the wrong way.

Sadly, I was right. After multiple attempts to purchase tickets (following their directions exactly), I repeatedly got an error message saying "Unfortunately, we were unable to complete the request on this device. Please make sure you are signed into your Ticketmaster account [I was] and try again [I did] or come back later". Changing devices put me to the back of the queue, and then it simply said "Your Browsing Activity Has Been Paused; We've detected unusual behavior on either your network or your browser.
To resolve this: Sign in to your Ticketmaster account if you haven't already [I did]; Change your Wi-Fi or cellular network [I can't]; Switch devices or move to a different location if possible [This was the new device]"

Screw Ticketmaster/Livenation; I hope the Justice Department dismembers them.

Best concert: Itzhak Perlman. He is heads and shoulders above the rest...though Joshua Bell is terrific.

Saw him at the Green Music Center at Sonoma State. If you ever get a chance to go there, go. Amazing venue.
