Stanford is going to have to wait a little longer for Elise Evans to return from the U-20 world championship. The US defeated Germany last night in the quarterfinals. The US scored in the 98th and 99th minutes of stoppage time to tie things up 2-2 before winning on PKs. Next up is North Korea in the semis. Notably, Florida State (x4), Notre Dame, Virginia, Cal and North Carolina also have players on the US roster.

The write up of the Germany match indicated that Evans returned to the lineup after not playing since the 1st match of the tournament. A minor injury? Illness? Whatever kept her out did not seem to be bothering her last night. She played 89 minutes and was according to the story "rock solid."

It was actually 1-nil (on a penalty) going into stoppage time when Germany scored in the second minute of stoppage time. Then the US scored in the 8th and 9th minutes of stoppage time, with the second goal likely coming on the last play (the refs had given 8 minutes of stoppage time, the US scored at 8:33). Germany had a good chance in extra time; the US dominated penalties.

As much as I was excited for the US to win the match, I was heartbroken for Germany, especially the keeper. The first goal that was allowed I felt was a defender’s fault for letting Dudley get the ball so easily and the second goal was very helter skelter. As a keeper, I definitely felt her pain.

I also think once this tournament is over, Florida State will be the No. 1 team in the country. They have so many players on this team as is. They are are going to be scary.

Notably Evans was subbed out in the 89th minute just before the US gave up that goal. Watched the whole game. Evans was fabulous. And the penalty was on Gisele Thompson. A very careless play by her. Too bad she went pro rather than play at Stanford. Can't help but think she would have been better off training with the program that produced Naomi Girma.

Thankfully Jasmine Aikey has been holding the fort in Evans' absence. Despite being a converted midfielder/forward this season, she just won ACC Defensive Player of the Week! And I'm really excited for how well freshman Ella Emri has been playing at center back too. Really solid. With her playing so well I assume Aikey will be moved back up (likely to center forward) once Evans returns. Aikey is already a 2-time Pac 12 Offensive Player of the Week. It'd be amazing if Aikey can win ACC Defensive Player of the Week and Offensive Player of the Week in the same season!

#1 Stanford defeated by #13 Wake Forest this eve 1-0. Wake is pretty good, I think. They were delighted. When does Evans return?

Evans was very good against Germany and the sub was to get an attacker on while down 1:0 so while I would have pulled the other CB, it was defensible. She started vs. Spain in the game 1 loss, I think she didn’t play the next 2 games and came on late vs. Mexico in knockout rd 1. Not much to say in the Mexico game; they had nothing left in extra time. So no idea if she was out for injury or just coaches choice. There have been some weird player decisions; so I tend to think just coaches choice, but that is just guessing.

Thompson on the other hand played 2 of the most negatively impactful knock out games ever. -3 vs Mexico where she was offsides being lazy tracking back and she got beat tracking back poorly on defense twice. -1 vs Germany on the noted PK. Really not Ok for one of the 8 pro players on the team.

First, the U20s are done. The US finishes third losing to PRK 1:0 and beating the Netherlands 2:1 late in ET on an own goal. If you were watching to see Evans - well that didn’t go well. She got a combined 9 minutes out of 210. The coach clearly preferred Gilchrist for reasons I couldn’t see.

Stanford beat NC St 2:0 this weekend with a mediocre first half and a strong second. New things at the start were Boamah started at LB, either Klinger or Kohler was RF, and it was back to Wolf at CF. The second half had all kinds of stuff going on after the blah first. Notable changes were Aikey to CF with Brandt filling at CB and a bunch of Sammy Smith at RB with Bhuta at DM for Harvey. All of that worked - Aikey scored the first goal and SS put a ton of pressure on NCST going forward while Bhuta covered a ton of ground. We also had a significant Murdock sighting though it was hard to glean much since NCST was mostly pinned back in the second half.

Random stuff
- Thomas isn’t ready at CF vs. better teams. Keep playing her, but she isn’t ready to start.
- Aikey needs to start at CF even if Evans isn’t ready. Play Brandt and Emri at CB if Evans needs rest.
- S Smith was very impressive. She needs more looks.
- Kitahata has been off a bit for a few games now and the offense has mostly died as a result.
- Harrison plays good D but provides little offense while Pagador gives a little offense, but doesn’t hold up vs. top wingers. See the first 10 min of half 2 vs. USCs Colbert for example. So I want to keep seeing Boamah and S Smith get more time.
- do whatever it takes to maximize Kohler and Klinger’s time on the field. I think that means playing them more at L/RF. If it’s one of them vs. Grilione for example, I want Klinger or Kohler.
- Montoya has been off all year so far - 0 goals and 2 assists.

1-nil win over Miami. Based on the stats, it wasn’t that close; 16 shots, 10 on goal for Stanford, but only 1 went in, by Lizzie Boamah in the 17th minute. Miami only mustered 4 shots, 1 on goal.

Wake Forest is currently dominating FSU. 2-0 in the halftime. Wake Forest had other chances to score. Perhaps Stanford losing to WF 1-0 wasn’t so bad.

Well we got outplayed to be honest. Pitt is better than their unranking, but it wasn’t great game for Stanford. It did take a series of mistakes - Brandt and Harvey combined for a bad turnover deep in the Stanford end and then Pitt scored a rocket off the bottom of the crossbar from 22ish yards out. Bhuta slipped slightly on defense to allow the shot, but it was an even better shot then Wake’s goal against us. Bhuta scored on a corner earlier in the game.

The Team is struggling right now. That’s 2 games in a row without a goal from the run of play. Kitahata is fully in slump mode vs. just a bit off, and Aikey up front hasn’t immediately fixed the problems on offense yet.

We are also now 3 or 4 games into a very altered lineup. Mostly

Kitahata. Aikey. Klinger
Kohler. Bhuta. Jung/harvey
Boamah. Evans. Emri. Harrison
Craig

Note that is 4 Frosh starting. Some of this I expect to stick - see some of my earlier comments as to why. But other parts of this feel more experimental. More comments overall after SMU.
