Final 107-43.  KP's team in it's first game does what no TVD team had ever accomplished.  18 made threes.  What a great start to KP's career as HC at Stanford.
Tonight our team shot 55.2 -- 52.9 -- 75.0.  They had 25 assists on 37 made baskets.  Outstanding, especially for the first game of the season.

But really loved the play of Stevenson. I know didn’t finished well but 10 rebounds and 5 assists and she is tough which we need this season

What surprised you about this game?  For me it was 1) how good Agara looked with her drives, footwork and using her strength to power through defenders, 2) Clardy’s 3 point shooting which if it continues just compliments her already established ability to drive and finish, 3) Ijiwoye is just so fast with the ball in her hands

Just got home from the game.  Two of us Cardboarders chatted at halftime.  Can't ask for a much better start to the season, although it gets much harder fast with Washington State and Gonzaga coming up in days. 

Kate at the last presser noted that we would be a very good three point shooting team this year.  It certainly was true tonight. 

So far, and very early, these are my impressions:

1) Most improved player may be Clardy, given that she has developed a reliable three point shot that we almost never saw last year.  Combine that with her excellent ball handling, defense, and her ability to drive to the basket and she has become a good all rounder.

2) Nunu is potentially a superstar in the making.  She lacks the height of a Nneka or a Kiki, but has the athleticism and (at this point in her career) a better outside shot. 

3) All three freshmen had their good moments, and it is easy to see each of them developing.  Shay has unbelievable quickness and drove baseline for a basket that I would never have expected to see a freshman make.  Peterson seems to be a terrific stretch 4 with a deadly three point shot.  Umeh has a lot of touch for a big kid and rebounds well. 

4) Lepolo is still rusty, coming back from injury, and now she has very serious competition.  Harriel has come on very strong, Clardy is so much more versatile than a year ago.  Even Papadaki got into the act tonight, had an amazing block and some nice assists. 

5) Stevenson seems solid and contributes defensively and with rebounds, but thus far her offense has been tepid.  I keep waiting for Ogden to look like she plays offense with confidence, but she hasn't shown us that so far this year.  We've only seen Lepolo briefly this year, but so far there is little sign of change.  Any one of these three could come on strong, but not so far when it comes to scoring at least, even though they each contributed in other ways.  Which can't be dismissed.

6) Demetre and Bosgana continue to be effective, but their play to me looks very similar to what we have seen from them before.  No radical changes there.  Both are very very good at times, and they were last year too.

We will know a lot more after we finish the next two games and have some serious competition, but so far I am encouraged.  The blossoming of Clardy and Agara--while Demetre and Bosgana continue apace--combined with all the options at point, make for a winning team.

The burst of enthusiasm on this thread for this team and coach is refreshing after having witnessed the disappointments of the past two seasons. And, the unbridled enthusiasm that I witnessed on the sidelines from our players tonight on the Tara VanDerveer Court is still filling my mind with electric optimism. 
As my wife and I drove out of the Maples parking lot tonight, this thought came to me:
We may have lost a star in the off-season, but we have gained a team.

There is a very serious question raised here and I hope it is being addressed. I think a new coach can do it more easily than a legend. “What was it about our program that made some great players want to leave it?”  Obviously NIL, or lack thereof was a big part of it. I suspect style of play was part of it…the vibe I get about this years team is that they plan to play looser with great flexibility as to who takes the shot. And with respect to the legend, I think there comes a time when the age difference is just too great to bridge the communications gap.

I have no insights into the players who left or the program that anyone else does not have. I’m not claiming to be right.

I would like to hear what others think, though, as I am convinced that if we don’t understand what the problem was and don’t fix it, we will not be a big time program again .

In regard to Betts, there was a poster on this site who I believe was a relative of Betts.  He constantly posted the main issue of contention was playing time.  Also he vaguely implied Betts and her parents felt Tara didn't appreciate her potential talent and the desire for more game time to improve. 

I agree it would be good to know if there was a systemic problem within the WBB program to cause players to look elsewhere  but would venture to guess every player left for different reasons.


Read an article a few months ago in which Betts was quoted as saying it wasn't so much the lack of playing time but the discomfort with the whole Stanford environment that made her want to leave. She didn't go into detail as what that discomfort was.
As far as age difference being a factor hurting recruiting, it certainly doesn't seem to hurt Geno at Yiukon.

Not picking on Baez here, but this Board was pretty enthused about the spirit of last year's Cam/Kiki/Hannah team throughout the season after what was a truly disappointing end to the 22-23 season with Haley stagnating at the end of her Stanford career and Betts' mercurial presence and subsequent departure from the team. I don't want to forget how joyful the team was at times last year, during Tara's record celebration and Kiki & Cam's many heroics, especially. It's nice to open the season on a high note here against an inferior opponent, but it's too early to say whether this team is any more cohesive or exuberant than previous versions. 

I didn't get to watch last night here on the East Coast, but I watched the highlights & am encouraged by what I see in the box score. Here's what I've learned about this team so far this season, based on Kate's preseason pressers, the exhibition game, and now a real one in the books.

1.) Nunu and Brooke are the starting front court. If Stevenson or Umeh really come on strong, then maybe either could start at the 5 and Nunu could shift down to the 3, but Brooke and Nunu are the only guaranteed starters I see on the squad for the season. 

2.) Harriel is one of our top 3 guards. I wasn't sure how this would look coming into the season, but she's really stood out so far. Plus, she was quietly our best guard in the second half of last year, once Lepolo got hurt and Hannah seemed to wear down over the season. To me, Harriel has proved herself as a defender and a shooter, and that's enough to guarantee her playing time. Hopefully she's the starting 2 guard and they just let her play 30 min a game. 

3.) Clardy is improved. 5 for 8 from 3 over the two games. She couldn't shoot at all last year. I thought her makes against Le Moyne looked less pure than some of the other shooters on the highlights, so I'm not convinced that this is real just yet, but she was 2 for 20 all year last year, so clearly she's improved a lot, even if we don't know what her real level is yet. She also looked stronger to me. 

4.) Lepolo is something to worry about. If she hasn't regained her speed and athleticism yet, I worry about counting on her for much as the season goes along because we know she's a streaky/shaky shooter. This team isn't nearly good enough around her and there are enough other comparable (or better) players at her position that she could really hinder the team if the coaching staff tries to let her play through her rehab. Lepolo playing through injury, unfortunately, was a big problem with the team at the end of last season. I love her as a competitor and a presence in the huddle, but I'm worried about her on the court again to start the season. 

After that, it's tons of question marks for me, but that's to be expected after only 1+ games. We'll learn a lot more during this next week. But like others, I'm excited with the start of KP era!

What a great win to start the year and if nothing else, at least instill some confidence in our players. It seems we are so guard heavy now when in years past, we literally had no one to play point guard hence why Talana got thrown into being a starter as a freshman. I don’t think her ceiling is as high as some other players on our team but she’s a great leader. Next two games will be tougher. Washington State and Gonzaga. Excited to see what we can do.

Seemed like a lot of games last season the opponents sagged off of Lepolo to double team our bigs in the paint.
They had learned not to respect her outside shot much.
So this year I'm more optimistic for the 4 guards you listed to be the more impactful group.

One thing that really stuck out to me last night was the large number of assists, says a lot about the team working as a team since no one in particular dominated the assist numbers. In first half, there were 14 assists on 15 made baskets (12 of them 3s, which everyone must be aware of by now). That's extraordinary.  For game as a whole, 25 assists on 37 made baskets. Interesting that assists/baskets went down in the 2nd half when the ratio of 2s to 3 flipped -- in 1st half, it was 12 3s, 3 2-pointers; in 2nd half, was 6 3s, 16 2s. 

I am concerned about rebounding, as I was in the 1st half of the exhibition game. Last night, it was 19 for the Card, 18 for Le Moyne. But 2nd half, much better -- 26 vs 14, so by game end, the Card outrebounded the Dolphins 45 vs 32. Maybe a reflection of the differences in the shots Stanford was taking, almost no O boards in 1st half with all the 3s, getting them in 2nd half with the greater work in the post, going inside.

O Boards will be a problem with playing mostly 5 out. Of course the coaches are well aware they will adjust.
