Agree, on wish I could have seen the game. It should have been televised somewhere, but I didn't see any possibilities.
TCU vs ND full game now in Youtube.

That all-transfer TCU squad of PRINCE (Oregon), VAN LITH (Louisville/LSU), CONNER (Arizona), BIGBY (Oregon),
EMMA-NNOPU (Stanford) and HUNTER (Oregon State) (plus SCHERR (Oregon/Kentucky) who has yet to play)
will make major noise in the Big 12 and the NCAA Tournament

Haley Jones is playing in Australia this offseason. It's her first time playing overseas and she is doing pretty good.

I'm glad to hear she's doing well in Australia. She certainly was struggling in the WNBA, occasional games when she played well, but not a consistent significant contributor to the Dream. I assume that she was not one of the Dream 6 players protected in the expansion draft given how little she played, and thought was possible that the Valkyries might take her, at least in part because of her Bay Area connections. But they didn't, and frankly, I was pleased they didn't. Her best year for Stanford was her sophomore one, and yes, she was asked to do things out of position her senior season, but she just wasn't the player she'd been earlier, IMHO. I found myself wondering if the Valkyrie team talked to Tara or Kate about her before deciding to take someone else from the Dream, again, assuming that she was not a protected player and thus was available.

I think she's probably at the point if she wants to continue to play in the league and make a roster, she needs to go oversees and work on her game. With the Dream firing their head coach, the whole team makeup might be entirely different and her future could be up in the air. I hope she can find a home. Her perimeter shot has not improved in her short time in the league reaffirming that her abysmal 3 pt shooting her junior and seniors seasons at Stanford were not an anomaly.

I'm afraid her shooting percentage was inversely related to her social media followers.

+1 I also thought that side gig influenced the decline of her shot more than anything else, especially her senior season....

The podcast really did not help.

thanks for posting - fun to watch.  28 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists. plays a combination of guard and wing. no 3 point attempts that i saw. mostly powering to the basket and excellent passing.

Tara doesn't get her third championship without Jones, who was clutch every step of the way to that trophy, as well as being a charismatic face for our team. Whatever has happened since, I will always be grateful she came to the Farm, and I'm hopeful she'll find a way to turn the corner as a pro.

Alanna Smith opened in Shandong with a 26 pt 20 rebound game

the pros are not kind to tweeners like haley and candice. nicole, too.

but also, most of our top players were not stars in the pros -  candice, jayne, nicole, lindsay yamasaki, kristin folkl, kate starbird.  a few were - nneka, chiney (hopefully cam after recovery from surgery) and a few others have started - currently lexie and alanna.

true of stanford football as well: andrew luck, cmc yes; toby and bryce love no.

lots of other college football super stars didn't make it in the pros - tim tebow, robert griffin iii, johnny manziel...

RE: Women's Basketball - Other - magnus - 12-12-2024

ND beat UConn today.

After beating UConn and USC, I'm amazed they've lost twice (haven't really followed them closely, though)

Why do you think Candice Wiggins was never particularly consistent in the pros? I don't view her as a "tweener", she was a 5'11/6'0 explosive shooting guard at Stanford.

I also thought Nicole Powell at Stanford showed every bit of promise to be a Tamika Catchings/Maya Moore like SF in the pros, but she too never asserted herself beyond a steady role player in Sacramento. Jayne never matched the success she had at Stanford, nor did Kayla, Jeanette, etc. It's too bad, the WNBA is a tough league but it's also not a great look for Stanford.

Looks like both of ND's losses were at a Thanksgiving tournament. Those can be weird (see: UConn MBB 2024). I recall Stanford WBB having one weird one in particular (Cancun, maybe?) where much of the team got food poisoning.

The Utah loss was headscratching, but the TCU defeat is not that weird. They are a pretty solid team with Van Lith and Prince; ND should still have beaten them but ultimately not the biggest upset in the world.

I see it as a great look for Tara. The WNBA coaches never could match their plays to the players. Tara did.

i say not a star in the wnba because, if i remember correctly, though candice was drafted 3rd overall. she came off the bench initially, started her 2nd year, then went back to the bench when lindsay whalen arrived, then was traded and stayed a back-up.

i say wnba tweener because, in the games i watched she spent a lot of time spotting up at the 3-point line waiting for a pass. so in the wnba (not at stanford!), she was considered not quick enough for the point and not big enough to play inside.

iirc nicole also spent much of her wnba time out at the 3 point line. again, considered by her wnba coach not quick enough for guard, not big enough for post. i disagreed, but i didn't get a vote.

i agree that haley's skills are closer to nicole than to candice. more powerful than quick - dominant against college defenders but not against wnba defenders. and like nicole, a good point guard but not a dominant point guard.
