Stanford is 9-0 at home and 0-6 otherwise. Part of that is the opponents, but part of that is travel (both on Stanford when away, and opponents when here)

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Florida State 7pm Thursday; preview and game thread - old spanish trail - 01-09-2025

Best game I've ever seen Bosgana play. Strong with the ball, assertive and confident movement, pretty good defense, and, of course, excellent shooting with none of those crazy rushes to the basket only to have her missed layup rebound back to the free throw line.

Also best game by Stevenson. She wasn't playing with mittens on her hands tonight.

RE: WBB: Stanford 89 Florida State 84 - 81alum - 01-09-2025

This win was exactly what the team needed to restore some confidence and optimism.  The smiles on the faces of our players after the win was over were priceless.  I don't think our team smiled that much after the last natty.  The players clearly felt a gigantic weight on their shoulders and they just shed it.

At the chalk talk we learned some interesting things from Heather Oesterle.  She said the coaches were pleased with some of the improvement they saw from the team the last few games, despite the losses.  It is a young team that has a lot to learn.  She indicated that the nature of the league was such that it was rare to play against a team with more than one "big" on the floor at a time--games would usually be against 4 guards or 5 guards, and that was an adjustment.  I asked about Kennedy Umeh.  Kennedy suffered a serious concussion but was just cleared to play again after the Clemson game.  However, her play will depend in part upon match ups.  There will be some teams that will have a big player similar to her who she can guard, but some ACC teams--including FSU--do not.  Oesterle had recently been on a trip and observed our incoming recruit Hailee Swain.  She gushed over her.  Swain sounds like a Candice Wiggins or Kiana Williams type player who will likely lead the team for 4 years.  "We are building something here" she said and certainly made the future seem quite promising.

As for the game, it is not surprising that we had 18 turnovers--6 on Agara alone.  This is part of what FSU does, part of their specialty.  Nor is it surprising that we out rebounded FSU by a large margin.  FSU does not focus on rebounding--they focus on sending people on the break to make a fast tempo game.  That leads to more offense for them and more offense for their opponents.  What IS surprising is that we out shot them 51% to 39%.  In fact, the most shocking stat of all:  we won the game while taking 65 shots while FSU took 83 shots.  I can't remember a stat like that before.  The winning team took 18 fewer shots than the loser.

At the chalk talk we learned that we would essentially be playing 5 defenders on FSU's 3 scorers.  Two of their starters would mostly be left alone.  We would be stationing two players on the blocks to prevent layups, attempting to force the talented FSU scorers to make jump shots rather than layups.  I have to say that the strategy worked quite well.  The two FSU players we sagged off of were 0-4 and 1-2 for the game.  The three starting scorers got 24, 23, and 19 points respectively, but those numbers were a little lower than usual for them and a bit inefficient.  Naismith candidate Latson was 8-22 when she is normally above 50%.  While giving up 84 points is not a great defensive showing, it is in fact 12 points below the FSU average.

The game, however, was won in large measure because we finally seem to have fixed our offense.  89 points against anyone, not least a major conference powerhouse, is good work.  Multiple players drove on the basket and finished.  Agara did so with some regularity, Heal, Bosgana too.  The ability to drive and finish is a critical antidote to the suffocating perimeter defenses we have been facing.  And guess what?  Those drives opened up the three point line, and we got back to 40% three point shooting including Demetre at 5/9.

Lots and lots of problems that still need fixing.  Free throw shooting was pretty bad--Shay has had issues with that all year, and tonight it really counted.  We still struggle with in-bounding the ball.  We will also face teams where we can't sag off of anyone, and how are we going to stop the drivers then?  But those are all problems that will be a lot easier to fix with some confidence and optimism returning to the team.

Based on tonight's performance I think Ijiwoye is doing enough to keep starting and get more minutes.  Clardy did not, in my opinion.  Heal came in for her and scored 14 to her 0, and did so with fewer turnovers even though playing against some excellent stealers.  None of our point guards this year seem to get a lot of assists....I am beginning to think that is a product of the system.  Agara leads the team in assists, and Bosgana and Demetre and Clardy are all tied right behind.

What a difference a game can make.  Sunday will be an even bigger challenge.  Winning that game would truly reverse the direction of the whole season.  But winning tonight's game is a major step forward.

(01-09-2025, 09:30 PM)martyup Wrote:  We are leading in rebounds 43-27.  We are leading in shooting %.
Those two often go together.
FSU hit 32 of 83 FGA, meaning 51 misses.  Stanford got 41 DR.  FSU got 11 OR.  Stanford 78.8%
Stanford hit 33 of 65, meaning 32 misses.  FSU got 24 DR.  Stanford got 11 OR.   Stanford 31.4%
(Discrepancy is from FT misses that become in play).
The sum of those numbers 110.2 indicates Stanford did win the rebound battle, even taking the FG% into account.

So, where did they get 18 more FGA? Both teams got 11 OR, so that's a wash.
Stanford had 12 more TO.  That leaves 6.
FSU had 8 more fouls than Stanford, so free throw opportunities cut down on FGA.

Stanford was 57.5% from 2, 40.0% from 3.
FSU was 46.8% from 2, 27.8% from 3.
We held their top player to 4 points below her average, and the rest of the team to 7 points below their average.
The big deal was that we scored well above our average.  The 3s fell, which opened up our 2s.

As for FT shooting, if you exclude Shay and discount the intentional miss, the rest of the team was 10 of 12 = 83.3% from the FT line, so this game isn't enough to say the other players have a FT problem. But Shay's FT weakness is critical as she's the player most likely to get the ball at the end of the game when the opponents want to foul.

81alum, on the TV post-game interview with Bosgana, she said that the team had stayed positive through the rough patch of away games. (But then, what else would she say.) If you have any direct evidence that the team had lost confidence and optimism that needed to be restored, I guess I haven't seen it.

(And, by the way, the half time show was pulled out of a can again. But at least we had 2 TV announcers that know the game. But I was listening to Kevin Danna)

RE: WBB: Stanford 89 Florida State 84 - JohnR34231 - 01-10-2025

Nice to see that we were capable of holding on to a lead against a good team as the clock ran down and not snatching defeat from the jaws of victory (or whatever banal expression you choose).
Hopefully as the season progresses, we won't look at this as an outlier.

RE: WBB: Stanford 89 Florida State 84 - 81alum - 01-10-2025

One other tidbit from the chalk talk I found interesting.  High school recruits are feeling a bit disappointed that recruiting for them has slacked off so much in the last year or two.  So much focus is now on the portal that many high powered programs focus more of their attention there and don't recruit at the high school level nearly as much as they once did.  It seems to me that this could be a hidden advantage for Stanford going forward.  This might not be true so much for the truly elite high school recruits, but for all those who are not projected to be 4 year starters but who need some development--Stanford could become the premier destination.  Otherwise it is off to the mid-majors where an athlete can hope to do well enough to be recruited via the portal (i.e., Tess Heal, in our own case, but what is becoming the majority of athletes on many teams.)

In other words, the mid-majors are becoming the minor league for the professional power conferences.  High school players who are good enough to go "pro" right away are few in number.  The rest need to work their way up through the minor leagues.  Any player who values a 4 year college experience, however, and an actual education that is not disrupted half way through would be better served coming to us.

RE: WBB: Stanford 89 Florida State 84 - M T - 01-10-2025

I was wondering where schools got their scholarship openings for their transfer students. It would be terrible if they are cutting off student-athletes who had been on scholarship (and NIL). If they did that, then you’d think that their reputation would discourage any new student-athletes from going there unless they were seniors.

So, the schools develop a habit for transfer athletes, leaving development to other schools.  Freshmen need not apply,..

If the NCAA put limits on roster numbers per class (years left to end of eligibility)….

RE: WBB: Stanford 89 Florida State 84 - BobK - 01-10-2025

Actually for most sports scholarship numbers will increase. Some double or more. WBB stays at 15. WVB from 12 to 18
Baseball 11.7 to 35. We know WVB will fill 18 in 2026
Doubt baseball will
It’s a new world.

I was thinking about this comment on the way home. Perhaps we'll return to the days of walking uphill (through snow) to Maples like back in the old days. No professional league, so those players who could get through Admissions were likely to come to Stanford. We rarely lost out on a recruit who could make it through that door.

I wonder why the need to increase volleyball scholarships. As a team we played 115 sets this year, and basically only 9 players played over half the sets.  Unlike other sports, there is not a ton of substitution in volleyball (once you account for the Libero and an occasional defensive or serving specialist), and sure, while you do have injuries (for example, Francis has had nagging injuries that prevented her from playing every game until this season, and Blyashov redshirted in part due to injury), I wouldn't characterize it as an injury-prone sport.  A roster with 12 players is probably fine.

Now, to be fair, a number of sports have a fair number of walk-on players and as the NCAA moves from scholarship limits to roster limits, a sport like baseball, where partial scholarships are the norm, will now allow many more scholarships since the scholarship limit is the roster limit.  In some ways it is good not to have a division between scholarship athletes and walk-ons, but the negative is that I suspect that it will largely be the end of the idea that "regular" students would be able to walk-on to a team just for love of the game, which again serves to further separate the student-athletes from the rest of the student body.

after shay bonked 3 of 4 free throws near the end, i was saying to my son, please please have tess run to shay immediately after the inbounds to receive a pass from her.  or run a screen. or put in chloe, put in jzaniah. just don't run the play to nunu or shay. are you watching the same game, coaches? bueller? bueller?

well, careful what you wish for: shay doesn't run to the ball, but nobody else does, either;  and we get yet another 5-second call.

Stanford's game was beautiful.  Perfectionists may focus on the pimples, but I choose to appreciate the overall beauty.

The press conference:

https://gostanford.com/news/2025/01/9/stanford-womens-basketball-florida-state-postgame-press-conference

The first one in forever.

The players may sometime give more insight than the coaches--they are less filtered.  Elena emphasized that "they have been denying us all year" meaning opposing teams are denying us the three point shots, and so we emphasized the back door cuts that were so successful early on.  Brooke emphasized that to beat FSU we needed to used the shot clock and make a minimum of 5 passes.

Once again, Kate sounded the right notes.

Highlights:

Meanwhile, everyone note that Cal knocked off North Carolina State.  Hopefully they discovered something that we can use too.  NC State ended our season and soured our last game with Tara last year, and payback would be very sweet.

To be fair to Brooke, that was a very quick 5 seconds (end of game). The two male refs were bad.. but Stanford didn’t do themselves any favors with the missed free throws.

I stop-watched the inbounds play - ref only gave Demetre 3.7 seconds.

They were quick, but accurate whistles.  The player making the throw-in has 5 seconds to release the ball.
Q1 1:17   The official is still counting (swinging his arm) when Bosgana releases the ball at 5.32 seconds after letting go of the ball in her arms. He signals a 5 second count at 5.51 seconds.  (Kudos to Bosgana for at least trying to bounce the ball off the opponent.  I think it would have been successful.)
Q4 0:28.2  The official signaled a 5 second call 5.16 seconds after the ball touched Demetre's hand.  The ball left her hand at 5.22 seconds.

I played the video at regular speed from the ESPN site while I had a stop watch app running free on the same display. A video screen capture recorded both simultaneously. I then stepped through that recorded screen capture frame by frame to find the stopwatch reading when the ball was put in the possession of the player, when it left their hands, and when the official signaled the violation.

P.S. Once again, if you want to see the end of basketball games, don't use replays in Sling's ACCNx.  They cut everyone of them short of the end of the game.  Go to ESPN, find the ACCNx replays and watch them there.

The officials in this game were Jospeh Vaszily, Rod Creech, Esther Hsu.
The refs in the Cal game were worse than this set, in my opinion.  They were Lisa Jones, Chuck Gonzalez, Tiara Cruse.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Florida State 7pm Thursday; preview and game thread - petersalas - 01-11-2025

Thank you for that! The first 5 second call seemed correctly called but the Brooke one did seem too quick! I just have PTSD with end of games where calls unfairly go against Stanford leading to losses. Thankfully the outcome was different this time, but again Stanford didn’t help themselves either… missed free throws drive me nuts when it can change the outcome of a game!
