The 40 year decision is not a main pitch, it never has been. But it's unique and important enough that, even though it is not of primary importance, it's
still important enough to pitch. Stanford has that much of a lead over other schools. And if you're going to do it at all, do it right.

I don't know guys, as a teenager the last thing I wanted to be confronted with is a decision that will last
forty years. That's two lifetimes. Now that it is only 2/3 of a lifetime, it is still too long. And I say that as someone who is about to pay off a mortgage (the fourth? refinance) after 35 years with the same APN. That's as close as I've ever come to to a forty year decision (besides Mrs. Jacketree), and I could get out from under that. (The APN, not you Mrs. J.) Emphasize what my next two to four years are going to be like on the field and off. To be fair, I don't know what the pitch is; hopefully not: 'yeah the next couple of years are no fun, but trust me, the mid-career payoff when sports don't pan out! I mean trust me on that.'
Alternatively: The pitch, however core to recruitment, clearly isn't working lately; try something else. (Read that as 'pay the scale.') That stud ILB isn't making some monumental mistake going to UCLA or Ohio State. The monumental mistake would be to go to UCLA or Ohio State and think you don't have to work hard outside your sport.

Take this as mostly correct. I have also seen for example OSU as #1 with a bit over $21 million.
I'm surprised not to see USC on this list. I have trouble believing that Oregon and Washington spend more on NIL than they do.
When I do a Google search for "USC football NIL spending" it estimates that USC football spends $10-12 million on NIL, which would put them 15th to 20th on this list.
USC being private may have kept them off this list. Every school on there is public, though there are not many or any other private school possibilities. Like I said, take it as mostly correct.

if you click through to the underlying data they say
Quote:Based on Booster support, the following is our estimate of NIL collective funding per school. Public universities only – private schools are not reported here due to lack of data.

their list has 56 schools on it, the list is for 2023-24

The guy running the NIL program for Texas Tech sold his oil and gas company for $4Billion last year. Since then, his primary focus has been TT athletics (he is also on the school’s Board of Regents). Match his assets with an athletic dept that carefully developed a strategic plan to become the best transfer program in college football and you have the reasons for why they have accomplished their goal*.
* At this point of the off-season, 247Sports has them listed as the #1 ranked team in the transfer portal.

and his wife was a softball player at TT which probably at least partially explains the deal for Canady

yes it does, and they were specifically focus on the softball team starting with the hiring of a new coach who was very successful at their previous institution of higher education.

I think you are right about that. They brought in a new Softball coach and eight or ten players via transfer.
All that suggests a new reality that is painful to accept but we may as well deal with it. Texas has become the economic center of the US particularly in the creation of new wealth… and its new money that typically gets excited about big change . Combine that with the much greater love of competitive athletics in
Texas than in California and I’m not sure we can compete.
But sports have never been very important to Stanford . Big money goes to environmental issues rather than college sports. Not arguing whether that’s good or bad just suggesting that we cannot compete with Texas Tech, much less UT or A&M or even SMU. The world of college sports will change a lot in ten years, maybe even five but for now we are going to have to compete with less talent than many other schools.
Five years ago the college world was fearful that Stanford would do what Texas Tech and SMU have done and dominate college sports with Silicon Valley money . It didn’t happen. And i don’t see any sign that it will. To beat a dead horse, I just saw that SMU has hired
Adia Barnes to be head women’s basketball coach. It would have take a lot of money to get her away from her beloved Arizona.
