RE: BYU Game Thread - fullmetal - 09-06-2025

That's what I heard.  Bear looks better than BG, but the Stanford defense is putting on the pressure here and there against him.  Bear has overthrown some receivers on deep routes as well.

RE: BYU Game Thread - JeffInCorvallis - 09-06-2025

First half: 30 yards of offense, 3 first downs, time of possession 10:05. Defense is respectable. This is bad.

RE: BYU Game Thread - newguy - 09-06-2025

we have three other quarterbacks on scholarship.
surely one of them can do better than this guy?

RE: BYU Game Thread - fullmetal - 09-06-2025

At the half, BYU has had 30 yds of penalties.  Stanford offense has gained a total of 29 yds.

RE: BYU Game Thread - needle - 09-06-2025

Stanford finishes the half with three first downs.

If there isn't a change at QB in the second half, I have zero doubt the team will finish with fewer than nine first downs, which was the team total against Utah in that awful drubbing from 2022 (Stanford lost 7-42). Looking back, I couldn't find a Stanford team with a lower first down total, though I could only go back six or seven years.

I believe the low last week for all of FBS was 7 first downs, gained by Miami of Ohio against Wisconsin (Miami lost 0-17, a surprisingly competitive game) and by Marshall against Georgia (lost 7-45).

I'd rate the odds as pretty poor that Stanford can get to 7 first downs with Gulbranson in at QB.

Oh, I'm not saying he's perfect. At least one of his sacks is on him as well. Just saying that I like the bones of his game as a runner and passer and decision maker. And he's a true freshman!

-m.

If no QB change after halftime, I'm going to bed.

Fair.  And I'd switch him in for BG right now, of course.

Here's a truly stunning halftime stat. The leading receiver in the game so far? Bryce Farrell, with 35 yards.

The Stanford defense is truly playing out of its mind. This just solidifies my thinking that Bobby April has a bright future.

RE: BYU Game Thread - fullmetal - 09-06-2025

The only dim spot for the defense has really been that whiffed INT on the first snap.  And allowing so many QB run yards.

Patterson with a nifty contain.  Too many penalties against Stanford though.

Run defense is okay, but tackling receivers looks terrible right now.  BYU receiver just ran through the arms of two converging Stanford defenders who were right there.

BG kind of on the run with a WIDE OPEN Roush...throws a keller chryst dirtball special.  Yikes.

Special teams allows an enormous return.  And on a QB keeper, the defense allows nine yards.

On 1st and goal, BYU runner breaks two tackles for the touchdown.  I guess the defense can only do so much.

RE: BYU Game Thread - needle - 09-06-2025

I'm feeling like a Gulbranson INT is inevitable at this point.

Enormous return by Tiger B.

RE: BYU Game Thread - fullmetal - 09-06-2025

OC makes some good calls.  BG with an excellent throw to lead Williams on a crossing route, uncharacteristically excellent.  Ford with a never-quit run effort.  Maybe we'll score!

Amazing playaction pass from BG, reminiscent of Luck, followed by 9 yd run from Ford...followed by two unproductive runs from Altahir.  Sorry, unacceptable.  You don't waste a 1st and goal with a 4th string RB who loses you yards like that.

BG fails to identify an unblocked rusher and is forced to throw it away on third and goal (nine yards?).  FG gets Stanford on the board.

RE: BYU Game Thread - needle - 09-06-2025

After the FG, Stanford's win probability at 0.1%.

So...there's a chance!

RE: BYU Game Thread - fullmetal - 09-06-2025

Touchback from Kenney.  On BYU's last kick-off to Stanford, Stanford caught the ball inside their 10 yd line somewhere, maybe inside the 5 yd line, instead of letting it bounce out for a touchback.  Rough.

BYU with a 41-yd pass completion inside the Stanford 40 yd line.  Oof.

The two runs by Altahir were existentially ineffective.  We needed Ford in there.

BYU catches a false start on 3rd and goal (1 yd).  whew.  Maybe the defense holds BYU to another FG.

Unblocked Stanford defender hurries Bear into a throw that the BYU receiver barely didn't catch (crossing route), short of the goal line...another FG forced!  BYU cashes in for three.

RE: BYU Game Thread - needle - 09-06-2025

Despite my pessimism, Stanford sitting at nine first downs. Really, really want to get at least one more (yes, my expectations are that low).

RE: BYU Game Thread - fullmetal - 09-06-2025

BG with 26 yd completion and 7 yd completion, both to Bryce Farrell...followed by dirtball special at the feet of Micah Ford running a swing route from the left hash to the boundary side...i.e. a SHORT pass...into the dirt.  Come ON.

RE: BYU Game Thread - needle - 09-06-2025

Got that 10th first down. While horrible offense, I suppose I've seen worse.

RE: BYU Game Thread - fullmetal - 09-06-2025

BG with a dirtball to Roush, a flushed rolling right dime to Williams on the far sideline, followed by a dirtball to Williams on an intermediate route.  But a completion brings it to third and 1 now.  Maybe BYU put in some second stringers. With less than 4:30 left, the benches can be emptied.

RE: BYU Game Thread - JeffInCorvallis - 09-06-2025

I conclude that Luck and Reich (who admittedly know more about football than I do) have thrown their lot in with Gulbranson for the '25 season. I am less optimistic that we will see a designed insertion of one of the other QBs save for injury.
