Today is April 13. I'm not worried about where Lyons is on the depth chart today. Let's revisit the depth chart on September 1 and see what it really looks like.

This is sports. Taking small pieces of data, blowing it up way out of proportion, and using it to project certain results far into the future is what we do. EMOTICON.
Two-year plan -
97fan - 04-13-2012
There hasn't been much discussion of it here, but a review of the depth chart shows that Stanford should be absolutely loaded in 2013. Yes, Stepfan Taylor, Chase Thomas and Terrence Stephens will be gone, while Shayne Skov, Levine Toilolo and Zach Ertz all seem like potential candidates for early entry into the draft. But Stanford should have a returning starter at QB and lots of returning talent almost everywhere; perhaps as many as nine starters coming back on both sides of the ball. If Stanford wins nine regular-season games in 2012, it's easy to envision the team starting the 2013 season in the preseason top five.
So does it make sense to approach this season with a two-year plan? I think it does. What I mean is that anywhere there's a close competition for playing time between a senior and an underclassman, the underclassman should be on the field.
Here are the positions where I see this as a potential issue:
- Tyler Gaffney vs. Anthony Wilkerson, Ricky Seale, Remound Wright and Barry Sanders at backup RB
- Drew Terrell and Jamal-Rashad Patterson vs. Jordan Pratt, Keanu Nelson, Kelsey Young, Devon Cajuste and the incoming freshmen at WR
- Alex Debniak vs. Kevin Anderson and Noor Davis at backup OLB
I'm not saying that all of these competitions will be close. If, say, Drew Terrell really pulls away from the pack at WR, then he should be the starter. But if it's close, you've got to go with the younger guy, right?

I agree with garvin.  When it comes to starting and the
bulk of playing time, your best guy goes at each position in each game unless and until he's getting beaten like a redhaired stepchild. If a position coach doesn't know who should be playing,
he needs to be rotated out.

Agree on the best guy. My understanding is that Harbaugh instituted a culture of mad competition for playing time, and that Shaw is continuing it.Â
The theory of playing the younger guys very much appeals to me as well from a planning standpoint, but I think it undercuts the overall theme of competition and earned playing time which is more important.
Part of this might be held over from bad old days - Redrum - 04-14-2012
When we were forced to invest more hope in the new guys coming in because the guys who were playing and starting were often demonstrably overmatched. So we figured the faster the new guys came in, the better. That, sadly, was not often the case. Stanford drew a few really talented guys, mainly in the skill positions. The rest were-- to use a convenient shorthand-- two stars who played like two stars.

Some interesting Nunes-Nottingham comments from yesterday:

Some interesting tweets from the spring game today--a bit of quarterbacking
Rashomon.
Kyle Bonagura: "Read into this however you want: Josh Nunes has been the only QB playing with the first team" (

Jon Wilner: "Brett Nottingham has thrown several first rate passes in Stanford scrimmage. Would be stunned if he's not the starter." (
