Wish I'd remembered that first, but I didn't.
Here's a hint:Â Fawn Liebowitz
It would be easier to have sympathy for the
family in general if after four years of national adulation for his son Manti's dad hadn't morphed from humble Hawaiian dad into some reality-TV bully. Just last week we had the story of dad punishing the Honolulu Advertiser newspaper for daring to publish a picture of his son--on his back doing the dead-bug-- as the illustration accompanying the story of N.D's mugging at the hands of Alabama. A parent being proud of a high achieving offspring is understandable, but something went to somebody's head.
 The
most generous spin of dad's inadvertent promotion of the whole story is:Â he was also a victim in the hoax but made up
white lies to support and embellish it. Which cleans him up a bit, but still leaves him with mud on his shoes and shins.
That...and the fact that ND knew about it in December, but apparently decided to try to ride it out and hope it (pardon me) died quietly out of the public eye.

OK new theory: Te'o heard the urban legend about getting all A's if your roommate dies. Decided to make up this girlfriend and her death to preserve his eligibility.

That's almost funny. And almost makes more sense than other theories.
Te'o claims to have talked with his "love" for hours every day. Who pulls off a hoax like that? How boring. Every single day yapping to this clueless guy. If the goal is to get something later, why talk for hours each day? Wouldn't a couple of minutes do the trick? And then why kill yourself before the investment will pay big dividends AFTER the NFL draft?
Also how is it possible that Skype, Google video chat or any number of technologies were not discussed? Te'o is a college student. His "girlfriend" was going to Stanford. How would it be possible that his teammates would not tell him to get a Skype account or download Google Video Chat or whatever? I have coworkers that need to Skype to their families every night on business trips. And they are in their 40s & 50s!! How could a young guy at an elite university (cough, cough, hack, hack) not get his girlfriend at the epicenter of so many internet technologies to get a webcam? His internet relationship was stuck in the 80s, and he did not find that odd while dating a girl that should be living around the internet technologies of the 2020s?
Te'o asking the Stanford team about the girl seems like a horribly inefficient way to learn more about her. Jump onto Facebook. Ask someone to search a campus directory, or a yearbook or something. Google her. Look for her youtube account. Almost anything would have been viable.
In the end, those pieces just don't fit. The full story is likely just so pathetic that it will just drift away. Either he is hiding something and it got out of control, or he is a very naive guy. I guess he can be a naive technologically clueless guy, but I would not think that would be possible in 2012 at an elite USA university.Â
I do see fantastically funny future ads for Skype, or Google Video Chat, or Facetime out of this.Â

Te'o talked about his imaginary girlfriend in interviews during national championship week, with Kelly and Swarbrick in attendance, after the date they have admitted to knowing the truth. Added to the previous scandals that Kelly, Swarbrick and ND administration all engaged in suspicious behavior that looked a lot like fabricating to protect the school, this might be the straw that breaks the dome's back.

The road of time is littered with the skeletons of those who figured N.D. would finally be forced to come to earth and grub along like the rest of us. But it hasn't happened yet.

Another odd detail from the story: Te'o mentions in some story skyping with his parents, so it's not as if he is unfamiliar with the technology. Just with this specific girl, if you believe the for-public-consumption side of the story.
(It seems that Te'o had an interview scheduled, then subsequently canceled. Maybe a sign the for-public-consumption story isn't quite airtight yet.)

That's partly why I found this take on the story so amusing:

From the comments section of stupac2's linked article:

"The biggest hoax of all was that Notre Dame was considered a good team this season."
I can't help but think it must really suck to be a N
otre Dame woman. It's hard to compete with a Stanford woman even if she is a fake dead Stanford woman (or is that dead fake Stanford woman?)

Another theory: Lance Armstrong paid T'eo (hopefully, more than he'll lose by plummeting in the draft) to do all of this, and let it all unfold now -- the timing is uncanny! :D

And it has a picture of Palm Drive as the background, so she really did go to Stanford! (or at least it has that picture now - who knows what will happen going forward.)

That is one tough year for a young man. First his grandmother dies; then his fake girlfriend; then they get demolished by Alabama; then he learns that his doctor, the one from Nigeria, doesn't even have a medical degree and those pills are bogus.
