wbbfan2 - thanks for reminding us about Kayla. Yes - she was an amazing player - could do just about anything and was willing to do anything to help the team. Not many people recall or talk about Kayla, as a freshman, guarding Candace Parker in the National Championship game. I thought she did a pretty good job even when they isolated Candace on Kayla to go one on one. Candace made only 5 shots.

I found this article from 2010 that compares all the players on the final four teams with their Hoopgurlz rankings. Since Stanford was in the final four that year, it gives a complete run down on the rankings on the entire team.
http://espn.go.com/high-school/girls-basketball/story/_/id/5050890/now
The rankings were:
Jayne Appel, No. 3 in 2006;
Sarah Boothe, No. 37 in 2008;
Ashley Cimino, No. 74 in 2007;
Hannah Donaghe, No. 45 in 2007;
Michelle Harrison, No. 40 in 2006;
JJ Hones, No. 32 in 2006;
Melanie Murphy, No. 49 in 2006;
Nneka Ogwumike, No. 6 in 2008;
Kayla Pedersen, No. 4 in 2007;
Jeanette Pohlen, No. 22 in 2007;
Mikaela Ruef, No. 16 in 2009;
Joslyn Tinkle, No. 10 in 2009
On the Way: Chiney Ogwumike, No. 1; Sara James, No. 18; Toni Kokenis, No. 60
Those are interesting numbers. Anyone ranked 1-9 turned out to be a superstar. Anyone 10-32 wound up starting for us, though often not right away. Of the six over 32 only Toni really started a significant number of games. Toni proves that players can dramatically exceed expectations. Ruef, Tinkle, and James show that moderately high expectations can still take a few years to come to fruition.Â
The interesting question for us is whether Beebe, McCall, or Johnson are going to be more like Pederson and start fast, or whether they will be more like Ruef and Tinkle and take a couple of years to develop and adjust to the college game.
It also seems to me that the quality of our posts is so consistently high that the guards that come here may actually have more opportunities to exceed expectations.

Is this a problem at the strength and conditioning level, or simple bad luck? (Or, of course: both?)

The injuries seem to be knees and feet, mostly, and I'm not sure conditioning really helps. In fact, too much running can contribute to foot problems--stress fractures, etc. Tara indicated this year she would cut back on the running.Â
Lately, the nagging foot injuries have really hurt us, even if it was knees and concussions a decade ago. After suffering all last year with foot problems, they came back on Ruef at the worst possible moment. Who knows how effective Ruef would have been if her foot issues had not returned for the last few games this year? And let's not forget Jayne. We lost a national championship because of Jayne's similar foot problems as we got to the end of the season and Jayne could not jump against Tina Charles in 2010. She was a completely uncharacteristic 0-12 in that game, which we lost 53-47. And wasn't one of Beebe's injuries a foot problem? And didn't Toni have a foot problem her first year?

Beebe tore her ACL in May of her HS Jr year. Training for the HJ. One step away from the state meet with a best of 5-6/5-7. Then tore it again May of her Sr year. This time operation was at Stanford.Â

Toni sprained her ankle in the NCAA 2nd round her freshman year, against St. John's. (IMO another factor in our eventual loss to TA&M.) Does that count as a foot problem? I don't remember hearing of any other.

Maybe we need Turley and the med team to start working with the WBK team as well :\
