1. If Hogan has two good years and is on track to graduate, there's a possibility that he leaves in his true, not redshirt senior year.
2. Even if he were to stay his redshirt senior year, both he and Crower graduate following that season, so we'll be left with only three quarterbacks if we don't sign one in 2015.

Crower and Hogan would graduate in 2015 so 2016 is the year we would sign one.

I think without a doubt we should extend the offer, and have Rosen make the decision, regardless of the depth issues. This would be the case with any 5-star recruit who has the academic profile to fit Stanford. Football is a violent sport, injuries happen, so today's depth chart might be tomorrow's "retired" due to damage inflicted by the sport (see Geoff Meinken for an example of an athlete who's injuries occurred mostly on the practice field). Also, people transfer (no guarantee that all the QBs on the list will be here in a year or two), or simply don't pan out as expected.
While I think we should always extend offers to any recruit who is A) probably the best at his position in the nation and B) can get through the admissions process, this is particularly true at the QB position, the most important single position on the football field. If Rosen and Chryst both end up on the roster and competing for the position, and the loser of the competition chooses to move on, then so be it. Both young men understand the nature of the beast that is big-time college football. The football team, and all of us fans, will be the beneficiary of the whole process.

Matt Cassel has proven that you can play QB in the NFL without starting in college, and that's at a college notorious for QB flameouts.
If you are the only QB signed in a given year, you will have a good shot at starting at least 1 year unless of course there's a wonderkid from a class behind. And that's too many hypotheticals that would be true of any elite program.

I think many would argue that Matt Cassel is the exception that proves the rule. The rule should probably be something like "you can't play QB in the NFL without starting in college unless you played at the #1 college program and get your NFL tutelage under Tom Brady and a coaching genius like Bellichek." Cassel's circumstances are pretty darned unique.
If I had a son who was a top QB prospect with hopes and potential to play in the NFL, I would probably advise him to transfer if it became apparent that he was likely to be sidelined until his last year of eligibility (unless the tradeoff is losing out on a Stanford degree, of course, and even then, it would be a touch call.)
But I agree that from a Stanford perspective, we should absolutely offer a kid like Rosen even if it means have Burns, Chryst and Rosen all on the same team. Competition is a great thing for any team and you absolutely don't know what may happen between now and 2016

Sorry Redrum if I left your favorite off the list. My general point was that picking up a top QB every year isn't a bad thing. Do you disagree with the substance of my comment, or just care that I didn't list every single potential starter for Stanford QB in the year 2016? Personally, I don't care who ends up starting. I was never pulling for Nottingham to win the competition over Nunes. I trust the coaches to make the right decision and they've shown consistently that they know best.

And, I concede, Lloyd disappeared all on his own when he took the time to do the LDS mission.
But mainly it's an off-season entertainment. As I noted in the other thread, there is SO much faith put in guys who still have a year of HS football to play and in a guy (Rosen) we haven't even offered. We really have Evan Crower and Dallas Lloyd to back up Hogan (unless they are crummier than anyone outside the team knows).Â

Even if someone transfers out for football, or goes pro early, once enrolled at LSJU they can come back and finish the degree even years later, e.g. Bob Whitfield.

Fair enough, Redrum. I have a hard time keeping up with the current two-deep, let alone remembering the 3rd and 4th string. (with notable exception for players with the same first and last name as NFL hall of famers.) If I've learned anything about recruiting over the past 5 years (I didn't really follow it closely before then) it's that there are no guarantees, but the more stars the better, and refilling depth on the OLine and Dline is critical. I view the rumor that Spain is leaning towards Stanford to be more important than Chryst committing, except in that Chryst may pull some other guys. Chryst may never play a meaningful down, as we saw with Nottingham, but top OLine recruits, especially with our jumbo package, are almost certainly going to play a role in the two-deep.

I agree with FarmBoy. My reaction to Chryst's announcement was more relief than excitement. Stanford is Quarterback U. We will always get great quarterbacks unless a total buffoon or idiot is at the helm. If we didn't get Chryst, we would have gotten Rosen. If we don't get Rosen, we'll get the Messiah, etc. :P It's a team sport. Sure QB is the most important position, but you still need quality players at all positions to accomplish what has not been accomplished in the modern era by Stanford.
Hopefully Chryst will pull other guys. QB is the leadership position. I recall Ryan Burns admitting that he wasn't getting involved in recruiting other members of his class. In this social media age, the players that are would be leaders are doing it at other programs. And did for us in that 2012 class. This class seems rich in academically qualified football players.
Right now, the fortunes of Stanford's football recruiting seem to depend most on the number of academically qualified players available at given positions than anything else.

I half agree with this sentiment. Ever since watching the Dallas Cowboys dominate the NFL in the 1990s with pro-bowlers across the OL, I've believed that the OL is the single most important area of a football team. It can make RBs and QBs look better by opening holes and providing protection, and can even help the Defense by giving it time to rest with a grind-it-out offense. But, the single most important player on the field is still the QB, and without one who is above average it will be difficult to have sustained success. With an excellent QB, along with the great OL, the sky is the limit.
I don't agree that all top OL recruits will play a role in the two deep. Like all other positions, sometimes injuries will take a toll (Dillon Bonnell was ranked about where Spain is ranked, though as an OG, but has not been able to contribute much), or sometimes they just don't develop as much as others (there is still time for Brendan Austin to come along, or injuries may give him a chance, but right now he seems to have lost out to more recent recruits). I'll still tend to get a bit more excited by a top notch QB, but if Bentley Spain and Casey Tucker want to join Chryst in the 2014 class, it will certainly add to the excitement.

I like it. I think I mentioned this before. My little cousin said Stanford is popular on the NCAA Football video game franchise because it has the largest play book. Now I realize this might be helping with recruiting as kids form a bond with Stanford. This is helpful when we are up against home, religious, or frontrunning allegiances.

Ude is on our radar screen. a 3.6 gpa out of Westminster in Atlanta. he performed very well in a recent national camp. here's the Rivals blurb on Ude from the camp (and ranked as the #1 underclass DL at the camp:

Ude earned the defensive line MVP award on Sunday in DeSoto because of his advanced hand technique and great explosiveness off the line. If he wasn't able to just blow by the offensive lineman, he had an aggressive rip or swim move ready to go to break free. Ude is pretty muscled, but there is still room in his big frame.
