Me too.
Looking at the ESPN preview, it reminded me of how loaded (and young) UConn and South Carolina as the two programs welcome in the top 5 recruits this year. Bueckers is only a sophomore and the transfer Kamilla Cardoso Dawn Staley got from Syracuse is only a sophomore, so both teams will be formidable for the next few years even as their upperclassmen (Westbrook, Nelson-Ododa and Williams for UConn, Boston, Cooke, Henderson for South Carolina) move on after the next couple seasons.
It's a reminder that these elite programs reload and not rebuilt, so hopefully we can keep up and get Rice to join us next year (and others in the years ahead).

I think getting Class of 2022 #2 overall 5'2 PG Kiki RICE is a BIG MUST for Stanford, at this point, in order for Stanford to have a formidable wing/guard ensemble to complement a very strong frontline group starting next season.
Without RICE, Stanford can still be a Final Four team next season primarily because of the all-around skillset of Haley JONES and a dominant frontline. But after next season, Stanford will still have a superior frontline (center 6'7 Lauren BETTS, PFs 6'4 Cameron BRINK and 6'3 Kiki IRIAFEN and SF/PF 6'3 Brooke DEMETRE, all of whom are HS McD AAs) but without any go-to wing/guard player (looking at SGs 5'11 Agnes EMMA-NNOPU , 6'2 Elena BOSGANA and 6'0 Nunu AGARA, plus PGs Jana VAN GYTENBEEK, Jzaniya HARRIEL and Talana LEPOLO)

I apologize if I am counting out the future backcourt group this early.
Just going by what I've seen from Jana VAN GYTENBEEK and Agnes EMMA-NNOPU from last season, and the ESPN HS ranking of HARRIEL (#78 overall - Class of 2021), LEPOLO (#70 overall - Class of 2022) and AGARA (#39 overall - Class of 2023). Outside of maybe Karlie SAMUELSON (who was a member of Final Four 2017, if one can consider her as a premier go-to backcourt player) I don't recall a non-Top 30/Top 35 overall recruit become a premier go-to backcourt (SG/PG) player for a Stanford Final Four team, in the tradition of STARBIRD and WIDEMAN (Final Four 1995-1997), WIGGINS (Final Four 2008), POHLEN (Final Four 2008-2011), Amber ORANGE (Final Four 2012 and 2014), McPHEE (Final Four 2017), and Kiana WILLIAMS (Final Four/National Champion 2021), who can (1) create off the dribble and (2) shoot the lights out from outside.

Add Toni Kokenis to your list of superb non-top 30 PGs. Sadly, we never got to see the full extent of how she would develop.

I generally agree that the truly elite basketball players are almost always recognized prior to college and are highly ranked. However, many players make big contributions and develop late. I guess the question is whether we can repeat as national champions without a truly elite point guard if we have elite players at several other positions.
Some would argue we already have. Williams was an excellent guard, but did not come in billed as a point guard.
Anna Wilson, however--if she can stay healthy--might be just what we need during a transition year. Very highly regarded (46th) and with 6 years in the program I am hopeful that she has the experience and maturity to guide the ship. She had a lot of assists in high school--I presume she was a point guard then. Then keep in mind that Van Gytenbeek was actually ranked higher than Anna, but obviously has a lot less experience.
My perusal of old ESPN ranking charts might be off somewhere, but here is what I think I found:
McPhee was a 25 (Kelsey Plum was a 26) They were within the top 30, but were not considered truly elite players when recruited.
Anna Wilson was ranked 46.
Karlie Samuelson was 77
Lili Thompson was not in the ESPN 100
Bri Roberson was not in the ESPN 100
Lindy LaRocque was not in the ESPN 100.
Paopao at Oregon was 11, the same as Amber Orange.
Van Gytenbeek was 39, a lot higher than Karlie
Sara James, on the other hand, was 18--but whether due to injuries or whatever certainly did not have the same impact as many ranked higher.

I think the stand-out example here is Lili Thompson. Not ranked in top 100, probably would not have been in top 200. But she was very, very good, started as a freshman. I think we sometimes forget how good she was as a way to get past all the problems at the end.

as i remember jj hones came in ranked #33. if not for golf carts, jeanette could have stayed at 2 guard and jj could well have led that team to a national championship.

How can I forget JJ HONES. I followed her HS career closely, along with those of Jillian HARMON and Lindsey YAMASAKI, because I lived in Portland OR from 1992-2007.
I was so impressed with Lindsey YAMASAKI in HS - she was a national Top 5 recruit from the Class of 1998 along with Sue BIRD, Swin CASH, etc - that I predicted that she would be a 4-time AA. Did not happen, but she did lead Stanford's WBB team in scoring during her freshman and senior year, although the best her Stanford freshman batch of 1998 could do was a Round of 16 finish in the NCAAs during her senior season. Her stay in Stanford from 1998-2002 was the leanest 4-year period in Stanford's WBB NCAA performance during Tara's coaching reign, despite having national Top 5 players in Center Carolyn MOOS (1997), SF Lindsey YAMASAKI (1998), PG Jamie CAREY (1999) and SF/PF/C/SG/PG Nicole POWELL (2000), although CAREY only played one season due to concussion. I really think that Stanford would have had at least one Final Four result from 2001-2003 had Jamie CAREY been able to play during what would have been her sophomore, junior and senior years at Stanford. I do remember her transferring to Texas and immediately leading them to a Final Four, am I right?

i was a big yamasaki fan as well. i remember sitting in an airplane reading a sports illustrated "faces in the crowd" article about her senior year in hs. si was really big on her and predicted stardom at stanford. she sure was fast and athletic.
on jamie carey: she was pac-10 freshman of the year in 1998-1999, but then sat out the next 2 + years with post-concussion symptoms. she transferred to u texas in 2002, and they did go to a final 4. i think i remember that stanford docs would not clear her to play but texas did.
carolyn moos did not live up to her ranking, and we were so short-handed at point that nicole powell had to bring the ball up court.
