RE: Class of 2023+ - CompSci87 - 11-03-2022

On the Rivals site, Ben Parker frequently said Delaney Thomas was still a priority target. We haven't heard that real recently, though.
I have been wondering if she still is, given the recent official visits by both Hannah Hidalgo and Juju Watkins, with only two scholarships still available. Could one of those three have been essentially waitlisted, waiting to see if either of the other two said no? We will probably never know, but it will be interesting to see where Thomas commits!

RE: Class of 2023+ - BobK - 11-04-2022

My guess given I read Ben’s great summary on recruiting is Thomas to Duke. 1PM announcement our time. Ben did say last he heard

RE: Class of 2023+ - Hoops9092 - 11-04-2022

Per her IG story, Thomas is deciding between UCLA and Duke.

Cori Close has done a nice job in the DMV, of course landing Rice last year and was the runner-up for Thomas' high school teammate and top recruit two years ago in Azzi Fudd.

My guess is it's UCLA as Thomas no longer is followed by any of the Duke coaches and still remains followed/following UCLA's. You'll recall how swiftly Kara Lawson unfollowed Rice last year the night before she announced. We'll see if that's the same situation here.

RE: Class of 2023+ - Lorcan - 11-04-2022

Thomas to Duke.

Guess Duke faked out us tea leaf readers.

Not surprised on Thomas. Onto the next!
What does Ben say about Watkins and Hidalgo? I hope we land one or both. Would cap off an excellent recruiting class.

RE: Class of 2023+ - BobK - 11-04-2022

All he knows now is down to those two

Landing either #1 WATKINS or #5 HIDALGO should give current #4 Stanford the 2023 top recruiting class,
surpassing current #1 LSU, #2 Arizona and #3 UConn.

However, if current #2 Arizona lands #1 WATKINS, they will have the undisputed 2023 top recruiting class.

RE: Class of 2023+ - Hoops9092 - 11-07-2022

Well here we are. Signing week starts in 48 hours (9th-16th).

I imagine we will hear an "announcement of a looming announcement date/time" in the next few days for Hidalgo and Watkins, the last uncommitted top 10 recruits. Perhaps a joint announcement for Bronny James and Ju Ju Watkins? I suspect it's going to be quite the media frenzy at Sierra Canyon.

RE: Class of 2023+ - BobK - 11-07-2022

Yep espn will be at Sierra Canyon I’ll bet

RE: Class of 2023+ - 2006alum - 11-07-2022

Would be great parallelism to four years back in 2018 when Jones announced she was attending Stanford, from her high school gym, live on ESPN. Here's hoping for a repeat performance 4 years later.

There is a chance! I haven't heard anything official when she'll announce but I concur with the others that Watkins will have a prime time ESPN announcement. I do feel better that she recently visited Stanford and we might have a decent chance. She was also back at USC for their exhibition game after her trip north. She's been on the USC campus more times than I can count. Granted, it is her hometown. USC hasn't made the NCAA tourney since 2014...could we really lose a top (the top recruit) to them. We will soon find out.

USC coach GOTTLIEB is most likely selling to Juju WATKINS that she will be the centerpiece of USC's resurrection
to prominence, the same way that UCLA coach Cory CLOSE convinced Kiki RICE last year.  The big difference is
GOTTLIEB has already coached a previous PAC 12 team Cal to its first and only Final Four appearance 10 seasons ago.

But choosing Stanford will pretty much assure WATKINS of annual trips to the Final Four and most likely
a few national championships, and she will be the centerpiece of that potential jaggernaut.

RE: Class of 2023+ - Jskass - 11-08-2022

Guess we see soon enough. Have to imagine that USC move to Big Ten not super appealing to an athlete who now will be on the far road every other weekend after her freshman year.

All speculative. But we sure don't know a whole lot about her recruitment. I wonder if she's feeling there isn't a perfect fit.
South Carolina seems like a long shot given it's location and her rumored desire to stay close to home, but what young kid wouldn't like Dawn Staley and this is the one school she posted on her own making it clear she was on an official visit in Columbia.
Sounds like she's a USC (So. Cal) supporter and that's become her home school, but I too would question the state of that program and the long history of top recruits going there (and sadly, not staying healthy/not panning out).
Arizona seems like perhaps the best fit with the top, well-balanced recruiting classes lately (and with a bunch of LA kids she's familiar with), with a young, relateable coach in Adia and the opportunity to be "part of something new". But we haven't seen anything that confirms she's visited.
Stanford makes a whole lot of sense, but I of course fear she see's the depth and very systematic style of play/program Tara runs - may not be the Juju show for awhile.
Makes me wonder why UCLA isn't in the mix (or are they). Seems like that would be an ideal fit to continue to grow her brand in that market, for her to run alongside Kiki Rice, stay in LA, get a great education, etc.

All speculation, as you say. But re UCLA, i can see the fit, but UCLA has the same problem that USC has, going to the Big 10 and all that additional travel -- could be a negative. I'm guessing that Ariz may wind up being the choice. Barnes is a big draw, as well as the great attendance. But if Ariz, RATS!

Watkins again. Gosh she gets a lot of attention. She plans to announce early next week her decision. Down to 3 schools: South Carolina, USC, Stanford (AZ eliminated).

I thought she might be leaning toward AZ as the favorite so that’s maybe a plus for us.

Will Hidalgo wait to announce until after Watkins does? If we get both, that’s a lot of guards for one class. Signing period starts today.

RE: Class of 2023+ - BobK - 11-09-2022

Thanks for posting.
Also we await Hidago

Very interesting article. Who knows where we stand. Kinda wish there was some content about her appreciation of academics in there, for our sake! Surprised South Carolina and USC over Arizona.

If she's from Watts, CA which is a community right next to Compton, maybe USC provides her with the narrative of staying at home.

The last uncommitted recruits in the top 40 per ESPN.

#1 Ju Ju Watkins, 6'1 G (CA) — Announcing "early next week" per ESPN article.
Finalists: South Carolina, USC and Stanford per ESPN article today.

ESPN #1, PN #2

#5 Hannah Hidalgo, 5'7 PG (NJ) — No updates. (!)
Finalists: Duke, Notre Dame, Stanford appear to be only official visits. Michigan and Ohio State in top 5 too.

ESPN #5, PN #9

#13 Milaysia Fulwiley, 5'9 PG (SC) — Announcing Thursday, 11/10 @ 11am PST
Finalists: South Carolina, Louisville, Ole Miss, Florida

ESPN #13, PN #3

#16 Cassandre Prosper, 6'2 F (CAN) — Announcing Saturday, 11/12 @ 5pm PST
Finalists: Arizona, Duke, Notre Dame, South Carolina, North Carolina
ESPN #16, ASGR #1 (!), PN #21
Link: https://www.instagram.com/cassprosper/

#19 Laila Reynolds, 6'0 G (MD) — Announcing Friday, 11/11 @ 3pm PST
Finalists: UCLA, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State
Link: https://www.instagram.com/iamlairey/?hl=en

#27 Oluchi Okananwa, 5'9 G (MA) — Announcing Thursday, 11/10 @ 3:30pm PST
Finalists: Rutgers, TCU, Duke, Michigan, Harvard, Mississippi State
Link: https://twitter.com/oluchi_okananwa

Kara Lawson could be on the verge of a big class, with Duke being finalists for #5 Hidalgo, #16 Prosper, #27 Okananwa. Of course, they already have commits from #3 Donovan and #29 Thomas.

Niele Ivey has only 1 commit right now at Notre Dame in #20 Emma Risch, so #5 Hidalgo and/or #16 Prosper could make or break this class for the Irish.

I view Duke and Notre Dame as our two biggest competitors when it comes to strong academic programs with young, aggressive recruiters in Lawson and Ivey.

Thanks Hoops for all the detailed work - hoping for the best!
