Every spring, the media puts together their grades based upon what they think of the drafts of the NFL's teams. Most of the reviews I read about the 49ers' 2022 draft were "B-", more or less, although Bleacher Report had a highly complimentary paragraph on Brock Purdy after OTAs.

Two left.  Playing out the string in football is always tough.  All about being as healthy as possible for playoffs.  Everything else is relatively insignificant.

Plenty of motivation during the last two games. If the 49ers (11-4) win one more than the Vikings, they would have at least two home playoff games, assuming they win the first. If the top seeds win, the Niners and Vikings would face each other in the penultimate game before the NFC championship.

Niners opponents are Raiders (6-9) in Las Vegas, where the Raiders are 4-2 at home and the Cardinals (4-11) at home. Interestingly, the Cardinals are 1-8 at home and 3-3 on the road. Nevertheless, I think the Niners should win out.

The Vikings are probably the weakest 12-3 team in the history of the NFL. Their point differential this season is just +5. They have two road games, at the Packers (7-8) and at the Bears (3-12). They only beat the Bears by a TD at home, 29-22. They beat the Packers convincingly in their first game of the season, 23-7, also at home. Packers are on the outer side of the bubble looking in, they need to win their next two to go to the playoffs, which means they'll be motivated to be the Vikings.

Best case scenario for the 49ers: they win their next two, Vikings lose to Packers on the road and beat the Bears. 49ers end up with #2 seed. Philly would have to lose both of their games for the 49ers to have a shot at the #1 overall seed. Very unlikely. Philly plays at home against the Saints (6-9) who are 2-5 on the road this season and a home game against the 8-6-1 Giants.

Minor notes:

Raiders imploding. Carr not starting.

Cards: Buddy Baker, maybe their best player, on IR. Always plays well vs SF.

Raft of Niner stories in Chron this week. Silver won’t use the name “Las Vegas.” He’s an Oaktown/Cal Guy and a very good guy. Go Bears!

f****** spell check. BUDDA Baker.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Mick - 12-29-2022

Packers favored by 3.5 over the Vikings at Lambeau Field. If the Vikings lose and go 1-1, and the Niners beat the Raiders (starting a third string QB) and the 4-11 Cardinals, Niners get the #2 overall seed and (likely) two straight home playoff games. Last time they had two straight home playoff games, they won the Super Bowl.

LV is starting their #2.  Their #3 is Chase Garbers, a QB who has not seen the field in his brief career.

Excuse me, their #2 QB with 13 pass attempts this season and a 39.8 QBR. As opposed to the Niners third string quarterback with 115 passes and a 67 QBR.  And a 103.2 rating.

Raiders are one of the most poorly run franchises in NFL.  Been largely irrelevant for decades. Carr will have plenty of options. There are a lot of teams with mediocre to poor QBs. NE, NYJ, Pitt, Tenn, Indy, Hou,Wash, Car, NO, AtL. Rams. (If Stafford retires).

Also, Tua back in protocol. I hope in the offseason he sees a neurologist and gets a thorough exam etc.  This is, I believe, his third time this year. That is concerning.

And yet, none of those teams took a flyer on Garappolo after last season.  Heck, even with his injury history, I would take Jimmy G. over Carr.

Yup. Jets or Panthers would be crazy not to bring Jimmy on board next year. ATL and NO should as well. Houston could also consider him, though don’t think he would do great with Lovie smith. Jimmy is the perfect “get decent QB play now while you draft your future QB” kind of guy.

Denver and Cleveland are married to their bad  QBs for the foreseeable future and their only hope is to try to make it work.

That was just flat out weird that a quarterback as successful as Garoppolo didn't get more interest in the off-season, surgery or no.

What makes this interesting is that nobody knows.

All I do know is that Jimmy is very popular in the organization. Hope he makes a ton of money wherever.

Phogge - totally off topic. Barbara Walter’s died today. 93.  Did you ever work with her?

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 12-30-2022

Nope. One of the few I didn’t work with. She was a bear about lighting and had a “good side” according to guys I knew who did work with her. Probably on a par with Stahl who just wanted front light and lots of it. And baby you really didn’t want to touch her hair or have your tripod too low (in her estimation).

They didn't make it easy, but the Niners won (in OT), and the Packers beat the Vikings.  The Eagles also lost, and I'm not sure what happens if as many as four teams wind up at 13-4 (Niners if they win, Eagles if the lose, Cowboys if they win, and Vikings if they win).  But I think the Niners have the inside track at the #2 seed.

According to Papa post game, if the Niners win, they have the tiebreaker vs Minnesota and vs Philly if they lose. So, the #1 seed is still a possibility.

Yep.  Better conference record. I think most likely scenario is 2 seed. And a first round matchup with GB.  Not thrilled about that.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 01-02-2023

"That's why they play the games" - has never been more appropriate to describe the Raiders racking up 500 yards and 34 points on the supposedly #1 Defense in the NFL.

I'm now more than a little concerned about the pas defense. Great to be #1 against the run, and Jacobs - the NFL's leading rusher - held to a long carry of just 9 yards and 69 total and an average 4.1 YPC, but you win in modern football by Pass Efficiency Defense more than Run Defense. The Niners pass defense is really leaving a lot to be desired. They miss Emanuel Moseley something terrible.

They continue to blow coverages and allow way too many deep ball completions, though the 45 yard gain by Adams that set up the tying TD, was absolutely not a catch. Just a terrible job by the replay review.

It was good for Purdy to lead the team to a second half comeback. That was the one really important box he had not yet checked, and he absolutely did check it in Vegas.

The Vikings are the worst 12 win team in NFL history.

Niners are at or near top in passing defense.  You don’t have the top NFL defense and not defend the pass well.  They anticipated run heavy Raider offense.  Got hurt by play action.  Lenoir had a terrible game.  Adams  is the best receiver in NFL (along with Jefferson) and played like it.  The pass rush was not as good as usual.  That’s due in part, I suspect to keying on Jacobs.  Also in part to being a little flat.

Can’t have the gaping holes for QB runs. He had three big scrambles.

Purdy had nice second half.  Showed he could lead team back and executed a nice 2 minute drill.  We did see his limited arm strength on a couple throws. But thats a relatively minor issue.  Just don’t hang an out. (Niners don’t run out routes much anyway)

Hopefully Greenlaw and Banks are ok.  Get through Arizona. Hopefully get a lead and get guys out.

Philly-NYG could be interesting.  Especially if Hurts doesn’t play.

Number 2 seed should get to pick opponent from the 3 WC’s. Then 3 seed picks.  I sure don’t like thought of playing a surging Packer team.
