Like him alot, but truly a walking eggshell.

Yeah, it’s too bad. He is a big piece of the puzzle.

Probably good for Piscotty, though...another right handed batting outfielder, who's having a superb spring (.333/.391/.476/.867 with no errors). That's T4th best OBP on the Giants for batters with 20 or more ABs.

And FWLIW, Blake Sabol has been the star of the camp. Leads team in runs, RBIs, doubles, slugging percentage and OPS.  Slash line of .407/.528/.852/1.360. Tough to keep him off the big league club. Casey Schmitt, right behind him (.433/.433/.800/1.233).

BTW, Giants have stolen 25 bases, been caught three times.

Team-wise, Giants are 22nd in MLB in runs scored and 29th in ERA. I can't find the fielding stats, but the Giants are tied for the 17th most unearned runs given up. Ouch.

Piscotty has an oblique issue…..I think Johnson has inside track.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - lex24 - 03-20-2023

Roster prediction 3-20.  Assuming Slater, Haniger on IL

Pitchers (12)

Webb Cobb Manaea Stripling Wood DeSclafani
Junis Taylor Tyler Alexander Brebbia Doval

Regulars (14)

Wade Flores Davis Estrada Crawford Villar Wisely

Yaz Conforto Pederson Johnson

Bart Perez Sabol

Giants OF situation is bleak. At least until Haniger and Slater are  ready. Until then, I suspect Pederson or Sabol will be in LF vs RH pitching. Johnson (switch hitter) should play vs lefties in CF.  He can be a defensive replacement as well. And PR.  Piscotty may help at some point. But he is hurt presently.

Getting 120-130 games from Haniger is key.  Ditto Conforto.  Yaz is a big question.  As a platoon player can he slash .225/325/400/725 with 12-15 HRs?  That and good defense is about what we can hope for, I think.  His playing days vs lefties are, I think, generally over.

Lotta talk about “piggy-backing” Manaea with another starter - either Stripling or DeSclafani. I dislike the idea.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 03-20-2023

I think you have the correct 26.

The starting pitchers seem set...I know Kapler has talked about combining Manaea with others...maybe not such a bad idea, but I think there will be plenty of innings to go around once they settle on a starting five, with Junes and the 6th starter acting as long relief. Hoping Luke Jackson will be fully healed by June.

And speaking of fully healed, that OF situation is a Greek tragedy right now. I hope Bryce Johnson gets a shot...leads MLB in stolen bases, 11 of 11. Conforto had a fast start, has cooled off, but leads the team in HRs. But having to use Sabol or Pederson in the OF concerns me. Obliques and hamstrings take a long time to heal, I don't think Haniger will be available until mid-April or May 1 at least. And Yaz has 1 hit in 16 ABs. That ain't good. Hope Kapler gets creative.

I'm not worried about Joey Bart.  Four strikeouts in 18 at bats, .278/350/.556/.906. Perez is strong, defensively.

One change for me…. Hjelle in, DeSclafani on IL to begin season.
Until Haniger returns, we can only hope that no opponent hits the ball to left field.

I said 80 earlier this month.  Drop me down to 76.  Things are looking more grim by the day…..

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 03-20-2023

I still think they'll win at least 86.

And the Cardinal football team will win at least 8 games this year.

What could have been: I was just thinking about Bruce Bochy's son, Brett. Saw him pitch a few times. He didn't pitch much in the bigs, just 6 1/3rd innings over parts of two MLB seasons. But he had a career MLB 2.84 ERA with a 0.789 WHIP. He had a 3.02 ERA in the minors with a 20-9 record. Had a 4.22 ERA and an 11-6 record in three seasons in the hitter friendly PCL. He went 6-1 with a 2.95 ERA in Sacramento.

I realize he most likely wasn't going to set the world on fire. At the same time, his career MLB ERA would have been fifth best out of 21 pitchers on the 2015 Giants.

So why retire?

Hjelle for DeSclafani a possibility.  But the Giants will have to create the injury. DeScalafani has looked pretty healthy.  Course, wouldn’t be the first time.

Hjelle will get a lot of work in SF this year.  But my guess is he will be on the shuttle.  Can ride that 5 times…..

He retired because he was never going to be an MLB pitcher. Didn’t have major league stuff.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 03-21-2023

12-1 win over the Dodgers today. Sixteen hits, Wade and Estrada had thre each, Davis & Johnson had two each. Everyone else had at least one, except Yaz who went 0 for 5 with 3 strikeouts and is hitting .048 and Villar, who was 0 for 4, now hitting .100.

Wood, Hjelle, Doval gave up one run. Four hits, 11 strikeouts, no walks.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Giants - 03-22-2023

From Andrew Baggerly…

Slater (hamstring) and Haniger (oblique) to open season on the IL.

Sabol is on track to extend the string of non-consecutive LFers on opening day for SF.  If he is penciled in the starting lineup at that position, it will extend the string to 17 different guys since Bonds.

Meanwhile, Crawford will likely extend his streak to 12 consecutive starts at SS.

Three players (Szapucki, Gonzalez and Jackson) will probably be placed on the 60 day IL, opening slots for Perez and Johnson.

DeSclafina will open on the active roster.

In two starts, DeSclafani has pitched 5 2/3 and given up two hits and one walk. His WHIP is 0.53.  I hope he starts on the active roster...

And the pokey-slow Giants, as a team, lead MLB in steals with 38 in spring training. Their OF, Bryce Johnson, leads the majors with 12 steals, hasn't been caught yet. In his cup of coffee with the Giants last year, he went 2 for 18 with 7 strikeouts. He has 8 strikeouts in 34 ABs in the spring, with a .353/.410/.471/.881 split.

Basically how I thought things would shake out.  Only question is 13 or 12 pitchers. I think 12. Opening another spot for either Wisely or Piscotty.

Baggs or Brisbee surmised he might start on IL cause they won’t need a 5th starter until game 9 - 11 days in.

The business of baseball…

https://www.forbes.com/mlb-valuations/list/

SF #2 in Operating Income (not sure how the figure was obtained since the franchise is privately held).

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - OutsiderFan - 03-23-2023

Can we now dispense with the "Giants aren't making any money because they aren't drawing due to losing, so they will be ready to spend big in free agency" nonsense? The A's are Top 5 in operating income and NOBODY goes to their games.

The Giants sure are looking like a team that is happy to lose in exchange for maximizing their profits. They are being run to make money, not win. No Top 10 most valuable franchise should be worried about making money, because the real value is in the equity.  PLEASE, Giants owners, sell to Joe Lacob and take your profits!!!

Kinda hard to spend your money when no one wants to take it (see Judge) or unforeseen issues occur (see Correa).

I can understand unhappiness in years past but this off-season, the Giants made a full effort.  I expect them to do the same next off-season re: Ohtani.  Whether he signs is another story.

In other words, you can’t make guys sign contracts.  You only offer them and the Giants are doing that (now).

The A’s are the best example of the fallacy of revenue sharing. Instead of spending the monies they receive from other clubs, they simply pocket it. That is the definition of a franchise that doesn’t give a damn what their fans think….

I will grant the Correa thing was a really weird situation. Aside from that, isn't it up to the Giants to make their money worth taking?

It smelled really fishy when someone planted the "San Francisco is too liberal" story last year, almost excusing the Giants for failing to attract top free agent talent because of where they play.

It's up to the Giants to figure out what the market wants and adapt accordingly. If you aren't producing what that talent wants, change the people who are responsible for offering it.  Maybe you way overpay vs. everyone else on a big name, to demonstrate to other big names you can land peer players.  Maybe you have a farm system producing talent that lends credence to the idea you can compete in a division with he Dodgers and Padres. Maybe you need to get a better S&C program. whatever it is, the Giants have to figure it out or they will continue having their money refused by the best free agents. Again, Correa was an anomaly, so maybe the Giants in fact were on the precipice of breaking through, but you know what we say about close, horseshoes and grenades.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Giants - 03-23-2023

Judge turned down far more money than the Yankees offered.  He was interested in being legacy player for the most storied franchise in the game.  There is no way you can beat that.

The Correa situation demonstrated the Giants can and will sign premier talent.  It is a matter of right guy, right time, right place….

To be fair, the Giants spent the 6th most of the 30 MLB teams on free agents as measured by total spending. So apart from not landing a broken shortstop and an outfielder who literally turned down an offer that was $40 million more than what the Giants offered, the Giants did actually spend big.
