Maybe he would also get better pitches to hit if they were throwing things that were hard to bunt.

I mean, it makes sense if you have a situation like: up by 2 runs in the bottom of the ninth with 2 outs. A walk moves the tying run from second to third, but a base hit means that the tying run is likely plated. At that point, you are merely trying to maximize the probability of getting the last out of the game, and letting Bonds hit the ball in play is not how you do that.

Which is why Buck Showalter intentionally walked Bonds in bottom of 9th, bases loaded, Ariz up 2. Brent Mayne, a darn good hitting left handed catcher, was on deck. He hit a bullet to right. Unfortunately the right fielder didn’t have to move.

He is the only man to ever put up an on-base percentage above .600, which is pretty significant even if it's not as famous.
Bonds was intentionally walked with the bases loaded. I don't recall ever seeing that happen, though I'm sure it has on occasion in MLB history. That season he was incredible.
As for Belt and bunts, hell, he did it with 2 strikes (for a single) not too long ago. He's done it (or attempted it) a handful of times, at least, this season.
Bonds was other worldly for about 4-5 seasons. He walked over 200 times one year. He’d get (maybe) one pitch a game to hit. During those 4-5 years, he damn near never missed that one pitch. Amazing.

Of course, he was also using PEDs during those 4-5 years. One can argue that lots of people were using PEDs during that period and not having other worldly seasons (true) and that even without PEDs Bonds was likely to have been pretty damned good, if not outstanding, but unfortunately, because he did use PEDs, it is impossible to gauge how much of that outher-worldlyness was him and how much was the PED.

Him. Yes it added to HRs etc. But not to squaring up pitch. Plus I’ll bet you more pitchers juiced than hitters.

The problem is it’s impossible to know. At least some of the balls he hit that stayed in the park were hit harder as a result of PEDs, and that affects everything from the grounder that makes it past the diving shortstop and is a single instead of a groundout, to the ball hit into the gap just past the center fielder’s grasp and is a double instead of a flyout, and even the ability to just make some contact and turn a swinging strike three into a foul.
Bonds was around a .300 hitter before 1997. From 2000 to 2004, he hit .306, .328, .370, .341, .362, when he was 36-40 years old. Hard to believe that steroids didn’t add 25 to 50 points to his batting average.

It wasn't just Bonds and it definitely wasn't just PEDs, though. From 1988 through 1992 runs per game across all of MLB ranged from 4.1 up to 4.3. In 1993 the number jumped to 4.6 and then from 1994 through 2009 it ranged up to 5.1 (never below 4.6). It's not a coincidence that in 1993 MLB expanded by adding the Rockies and Marlins, and in 1998 further expanded with the Diamondbacks and Rays. So in a short period of time pitching was significantly diluted and two parks opened that were so favorable to offense that humidors were needed to suppress hitting. Furthermore, almost all the new parks that opened in this period were smaller and more offense-oriented.
So you had a perfect storm of pitchers throwing much harder due to PEDs (increasing exit velocity), hitters hitting harder due to PEDs (same), ballparks much more conducive to runs scoring (and home runs), weakened pitching staffs due to expansion and possibly a juiced up baseball. Everyone's offensive statistics were inflated, although PEDs were only one of the factors. What is noteworthy is how much better Bonds was compared to his peers. His numbers were inflated in absolute terms, but his relative dominance is still startling, playing half his games in a park that wasn't one of the hitter-biased ones.
I always found it appropriate that when Bonds hit home run #755 the pitcher was Clay Hensley, who had been suspended the year before for testing positive for steroids. That was the era and numbers were distorted as a result, but nobody came close to the combination of insane on-base percentage and power that Bonds produced.

Three bats are on their way over the next several weeks. - Belt, Longoria and LaStella.
IMO, pitching is the biggest need - both starting and relieving.

Wade is beginning to leak a little. So is Duggar. And against lefties Ruf can play left with Slater in Center.
Casali is a good catcher and has begun to hit a bit. So use him and let Buster get a bit more time for the thumb. While still getting his bat in the lineup.
This group is very process driven. Great. It’s worked. But sometimes you need to adjust. And go with gut. Case in point. Ruf hits a mammoth HR. Next time around he’s up with runners on first and third. Sixth inning. No outs. Kapler puts in Wade to hit for him. Cause they brought in a right hander. I get the platoon. Numbers etc. But Ruf isn’t helpless vs Righthanders. And he’s had a lot of good ABs lately. Plus I’d rather keep his bat in if they have a lefty next time round. And save Wade for another time.

The complete (or pretty complete) inability of the Giants to score in "small ball" ways has bitten them in the a$$ the last two games and I've got a sinking feeling about this. Are the Giants going to continue to get 2-out 2 (or 3) run dongs? I don't think so.
Also, I fundamentally don't "get" why Analytics' "launch angle" and "only swing at pitches you can drive" can't be put on back burner when you FREAKING NEED TO SCORE THE RUNNER FROM THIRD WITH LESS THAN 2 OUTS and the D is "giving" you the run if you put it in play. How does Farhan and Gabe's approach look when freaking Wilmer Flores looks at 3 and only 3 pitches in his AB for a K with runners on first and third and NO FREAKING outs. Of course, the Giants fail to score.
It's so infuriating. And WTF is up with Dickerson not tagging and going to third on Slater's deep drive to RF. Didn't see it, but some post-game commenters said it was poor base-running (as was having Dickerson PH before the faster Duggar - both of whom walked).
On the bright side, Cueto pitched well for his 5 innings. Hate to waste those outings from Johnny.

I think he's actually a decent player. Tommy La Stella was an all-star two years ago for the LA Angels of A, fewest strikeouts of any starter in the majors (169 over 1,384 career ABs), .347 on base average. Played for Oakland last year, .367 OBP. OPS of .819 or better three of last four years (not including this one). Mainly plays 2B, can play 3B and 1B at the major league level. Not great range at 2B, .978 fielding percentage (shade under .982 NL average for 2B over his career). Last season, he was 1st in the AL in most ABs per strikeout (16.3) ...and most errors at 2B with 4.
