RE: Class of 2023+ - Card10Fan - 11-09-2022

Hidalgo is planning to announce her choice on the last day of the signing period (presumably next Wednesday November 16). We will know Watkins choice before then.

RE: Class of 2023+ - BobK - 11-09-2022

Thanks. Another week to go

I'm wondering that (in the end), how much will academics likely play in their decisions?

Spike - Spike - 11-09-2022

Hidalgo and Watkins are unusually quiet about their choices. Not even Cardboard detectives can dig up any clues.
And no “crystal balls” from the media.

I really don't think anyone has any inside at least that's been reported. Men's college basketball recruiting is a lot better at crystal ball predictions.

I don't think Watkins goes to SC (she is on record saying playing close to home is important to her) so USC or Stanford seem to make more sense. IMO, we make the most sense if she really wants to win a national championship.  USC has only one 2023 commit. They only signed one recruit in last years 2022 recruiting cycle. Here's a tweet from an LA times reporter today.

It's almost like Hidalgo is waiting to see if Watkins picks Stanford before she announces herself. It could also just be a coincidence with regard to timing. It seems unlikely we'd got both recruits. I hope we get at least get one though!

I agree that I think it's down to USC and Stanford, and think her being from Watts/Compton is a storyline for staying in Southern California, IE that tweet that the buzz is building, I can see that.

I think Duke is the biggest threat for Hidalgo, especially with the class they have coming in.

And you know, with the depth we have and what we saw from Lepolo and Nivar, I'm not too worried if we don't get these two recruits, we have a ton of talent returning next year and in the future.

more rumors from ND board - hidalgo Duke, prosper AZ

Unfortunately, I think that makes a lot of sense for Hidalgo and would be a great duo for Lawson to snag with top SG Donovan.

Prosper to Arizona would be a big get for Barnes to cap off this class.

RE: Class of 2023+ - joemontes - 11-09-2022

Returning players and incoming committed 2023 recruits for Stanford
for next season:

SF:  OGDEN  6'1  (freshman)
SF:  DEMETRE  6'3
PF:  AGARA  6'2  (freshman)
PF:  IRIAFEN  6'3
PF:  BRINK  6'4
C:  BETTS  6'7

SG:  EMMA-NNOPU  5'11
SG:  BOSGANA  6'2
SG:  PAPADAKI  5'11
SG:  FIELDS  5'9
SG:  CLARDY  5'9  (freshman)
SG/PG:  NIVAR  5'10
SG/PG:  HARRIEL  5'10
PG:  LEPOLO  5'7

2023 #1 WATKINS (SG/SF) and #5 HIDALGO (PG) are looking
at this 14-man Stanford roster for next season and are most
probably thinking, "Man, that's more than a complete team already!"

For WATKINS - NINE (9) potential teammates (that's a LOT!)
playing the same position at SG or SF

For HIDALGO - LEPOLO is the only pure upperclassman PG
that she will compete for PG playing time

Looking at South Carolina's returning upperclassmen
and committed incoming 2023 recruits for next season:

SF:  JAH  6'1  (freshman)
PF:  FEAGIN  6'3
PF:  WATKINS  6'3
PF:  KITTS  6'2  (freshman)
C:  CARDOSO  6'7

SG:  HALL  6'0
SG:  JOHNSON Tessa  5'10  (freshman)
PG:  COOPER  6'0
PG:  JOHNSON Raven  5'8

With only 6 returning upperclassmen and 3 committed 2023 recruits,
and only 2 SGs and one SF in this roster, might be a more desirable
situation for #1 WATKINS

imo roster numbers aren't critical for a top recruit. haley and cam didn't have to worry about playing time. lauren doesn't have to worry about playing time. juju won't have to worry about playing time at stanford.

if juju chooses stanford, it's indya &/or nunu, courtney, agnes, elena, etc., who will potentially lose playing time (as fran and ashten are this year).  hopefully, we'll be so far ahead in most games that tara will still fit them in.

imo stanford will showcase juju best as she will have the post players to complement her game and to limit double-teams.

another wrinkle, Watkins NIL "agent" is Li English, S.Carolina alum

Yup. And Juju's coach prior to this year: Vanessa Nygaard

RE: Class of 2023+ - BostonCard - 11-10-2022

Having headed down this road way too many times, I am just mentally prepared for us to go 0/2.  Kiki Rice, Azzi Fudd, the point guard who went to Notre Dame.  I hope I am wrong, and I have no particular insight, but I just have a bad feeling.

To be fair though, only Rice was admitted to Stanford. Both Miles and Fudd committed too early to even have a chance at the application process at Stanford.

A better analogy would have been Katie Lou Samuelson. Wasn’t Deja Kelly if UNC also admitted but went to North Carolina instead?

RE: Class of 2023+ - BobK - 11-10-2022

Diggins was admitted and a blast from the past as was Monquie Billings

RE: Class of 2023+ - martyup - 11-10-2022

Nunu, Juju, it's so confusing my mind is going Kookoo.

RE: Class of 2023+ - Jskass - 11-10-2022

I for one am taking a deep breath as it is completely out of our and Stanford's control. If she wants a run at national championships, basketball skills growth and great academics while being a mere 1 hour flight from home this is it. If not, then she has decided that other priorities matter more and the above are not as high criteria.

triangle2 - triangle2 - 11-10-2022

Am I the only one thinking that the best ‘late’ recruiting pitch for recruits like Watkins and Hidalgo was Haley Jones’ media exposure via Jeopardy and her Nike deal? To the extent that 5-star recruits are also thinking about brand development (honestly not my favorite thing but a reality), Jones is a magnificent example - “Made the 40 year decision and I won a natty with Tara; hey, decided to play point this year;  wearing my Nike gear and off to shoot my Jeopardy segment…”
