No wonder Zaidi did not receive a single vote in a poll of top baseball execs (selecting the top baseball team leaders) in The Athletic this morning. In addition to the many fans who believe he is not top decision-maker material, his peers think the same.
I think Montgomery worked at least two in the minors.

No wonder Zaidi did not receive a single vote in a poll of top baseball execs (selecting the top baseball team leaders) in The Athletic this morning. In addition to the many fans who believe he is not top decision-maker material, his peers think the same.
I did see that, and it made total sense to me. The Giants have ranked in the 20s, typically, for fielding, hitting and defense. They were ranked dead last in the draft. In that poll, 40 execs across MLB were asked to provide the top five front offices. No surprise that LA was ranked first of the 16 teams that received at least one vote. And no surprise that the Giants received 0 votes.
But Snell's injury is on pitching coach Bryan Price and manager Bob Melvin. They're the ones who used him. All Zaidi did was buy a year or two's worth of his time. Farhan didn't schedule him to pitch or go deep into a game, particularly after his typical usage is 120 innings or fewer in a season.

He didn’t. Snell’s injury is on Snell. He could’ve gone to the minor leagues like Montgomery and got himself ready under less stressful conditions. He chose not to do so.

I was thinking in terms of number of pitches. He threw 85 in his last start.

How old are they, how much training have they had, what is their experience etc. The odd kid may be ready to pitch in the majors at 18, others maybe not until 25 or older. We are all different and training for each has probably also been different. It is up to the club management to decide when the player is ready. If he is consistently wrong, you need some new management.

Montgomery pitched in a couple games in the minors before joining the D-Backs this year.
His minor league stats were: 0-0, 7.2 innings pitched, nine strikeouts and a 10.57 ERA.
Since his return to the majors, he is: 1-1, 13 innings pitched, seven strikeouts and a 2.08 ERA.
Prior to signing with AZ, Montgomery agreed to start the season in the minors. That was a joint decision made by Boras, AZ executive leadership and Montgomery. The Giants should have pursued a similar arrangement re: Snell. Instead, Zaidi dropped the ball and dumped the problem into Melvin’s lap. FZ made a significant mistake.

Wasn't his first, by a long shot, and wasn't his last. But listening to Boras talk about how he keeps his athletes "in MLB shape at (his) training complex" induces a massive eyeroll. Everyone should have known better, particularly with a pitcher who gets as injured as often as Snell does.

Do we know that the Giants did not pursue that avenue? If they did and Snell said no – what were they to do - pass on the signing? I haven’t seen anything definitive on this. I have seen Snell comment that he did not feel he needed to go to the minor leagues.
I’m hopeful Snell gets back by the end of May. And that he has a strong season moving forward. But I wanted Montgomery all along. Part of that is watching pitchers like Snell kind of drives me crazy. In any event, not good so far. No question about that.

Agree on the “eye roll”. I think we all knew that signing pitchers as late as happened here could lead to problems. Montgomery fired Boras. Good for him.
Also, Bellinger lost a fight with the centerfield wall in Wrigley. Two broken ribs. He’s out a while.

Train of thought, but I wanted Dansby Swanson, supposedly the least attractive of the four free agent shortstops two years ago. And all he did was (a) sign for the lowest amount of the four and (b) go to the All Star game for a second year in a row and © win his second gold glove in a row. On the other hand, Nick Ahmed is having a significantly better year than Swanson so far in the field. He's accepted about 25 more chances, has 2x as many DPs (10 vs. 20), and has a better Rtot (2 vs. 0). At the plate, bit of a wash. Ahmed has a better batting average, Swanson has a better OPS. And Swanson is making $26 mms. vs. Ahmed's $850k.

I agree 100% with both the “eye roll” and Montgomery over Snell comments.
In another era, Boras would have led the nation in snake oil sales.
Prior to either player signing, I posted that Montgomery was the better option. What I don’t know is whether he would have considered signing with SF. Maybe the Giants had no choice. Regardless, they are stuck with Snell. We can only hope he comes back and makes a contribution.
Lastly, Swanson had zero interest in signing with SF. He was never a consideration.

I suspect Monty might have considered the Giants. He pitches really well at Oracle. Has his best career ERA and WHIP at Oracle of any ballpark at which he's pitched more than one game.
The Giants contacted Swanson's agent, and the agent dutifully listed the Giants as one of six teams that were interested. But I think the Giants were behind four other teams...

I can’t see why Montgomery would not have come to SF. He wanted to stay on East Coast, particularly Boston, as his wife is a resident in a Boston hospital. But that ship sailed fairly quickly.
He also wanted the long term deal that obviously didn’t materialize. I think once Snell was signed he saw the writing on the wall.

I had to chuckle when I read a couple of headlines trumpeting that Bailey had set an MLB record. I knew it couldn't be 6 HRs in one game b/c the score was 3-0, LOL. Turns out he was the first catcher to a) hit a walkoff HR, b) catch a shutout and c) participate in a double play.
Records are records, and what he did was impressive, but jeez, kind of a stretch for the stats guys....

Baseball loves these kind of stats. The games been played for 150 plus years. Anytime you’re the first to do something in baseball it’s worthy of a note. I don’t think they’re going to enshrine the event in Cooperstown. But it’s a fun little factoid.
I think the “record” involved not just any DP, but a Lawrence Welk DP. A 1 and a 2 and a 3…..
Both the double play and the HR came in the 9th. Reminded me just a little bit of a Barry Bonds game - tie game, he threw out a guy at the plate in the ninth inning and then hit a home run in the bottom of the inning to win it.

Don't look now, but the Giants are 2nd in the NL West at 14-15. They're still two games behind the Reds for the final wild card playoff spot, and back of the Mets and Nationals.
Nice to see Yaz heating up a little bit before he visits Fenway tonight. He went 2 for 3 with a game-winning HR. He's now hitting .236, better than any of the three previous years. Perhaps he'll return to greatness.
Fitzgerald was a revelation, going 3 for 3, now hitting .313/.353/.563/.916.
Logan Webb (3-1, 2.33, 26K) tonight vs. Criswell (1-1, 2.38, 7K)
Giants are 17th in OPS and 21st in runs scored; 25th in ERA and 15th in WHIP. Hopefully, things will improve.
