Good.  He should be at First Base for awhile. But apparently they refuse to do that.  Catching is going to be harder on the thumb than hitting.  Why not wait another week and put him at first till then.

Wade is beginning to leak a little. So is Duggar.  And against lefties Ruf can play left with Slater in Center.

Casali is a good catcher and has begun to hit a bit.  So use him and let Buster get a bit more time for the thumb. While still getting his bat in the lineup.

This group is very process driven.  Great. It’s worked. But sometimes you need to adjust. And go with gut.  Case in point. Ruf hits a mammoth HR.  Next time around he’s up with runners on first and third. Sixth inning. No outs.  Kapler puts in Wade to hit for him.  Cause they brought in a right hander. I get the platoon.  Numbers etc.  But Ruf isn’t helpless vs Righthanders.  And he’s had a lot of good ABs lately. Plus I’d rather keep his bat in if they have a lefty next time round. And save Wade for another time.

The complete (or pretty complete) inability of the Giants to score in "small ball" ways has bitten them in the a$$ the last two games and I've got a sinking feeling about this.  Are the Giants going to continue to get 2-out 2 (or 3) run dongs?  I don't think so.

Also, I fundamentally don't "get" why Analytics' "launch angle" and "only swing at pitches you can drive" can't be put on back burner when you FREAKING NEED TO SCORE THE RUNNER FROM THIRD WITH LESS THAN 2 OUTS and the D is "giving" you the run if you put it in play.  How does Farhan and Gabe's approach look when freaking Wilmer Flores looks at 3 and only 3 pitches in his AB for a K with runners on first and third and NO FREAKING outs.  Of course, the Giants fail to score.

It's so infuriating.  And WTF is up with Dickerson not tagging and going to third on Slater's deep drive to RF.  Didn't see it, but some post-game commenters said it was poor base-running (as was having Dickerson PH before the faster Duggar - both of whom walked).

On the bright side, Cueto pitched well for his 5 innings.  Hate to waste those outings from Johnny.

Try to convince an analytics junkie that small ball ever matters.  Agree with you. But “two strike adjustments “ are a thing of the past. St.L won this game cause they had a guy that actually hit behind the runner with a man on second nobody out.  Giants had 3 ABs with runner on 3d less than two out.  Failed each time.  I believe they scored 9 runs in the series. 8 by HRs.

It doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive.  You can grind pitchers, use your launch angle and go for the downs.  And still, at times realize that shortening up and making contact is the key….

Three bats are on their way over the next several weeks. - Belt, Longoria and LaStella.

IMO, pitching is the biggest need - both starting and relieving.

Posey.  Longo not back till Aug.  I’ll believe Belt will be back when I see it. Who is LaStella.  Is he related to DeRosa…..

I think he's actually a decent player.  Tommy La Stella was an all-star two years ago for the LA Angels of A, fewest strikeouts of any starter in the majors (169 over 1,384 career ABs), .347 on base average.  Played for Oakland last year, .367 OBP.  OPS of .819 or better three of last four years (not including this one).  Mainly plays 2B, can play 3B and 1B at the major league level.  Not great range at 2B, .978 fielding percentage (shade under .982 NL average for 2B over his career).  Last season, he was 1st in the AL in most ABs per strikeout (16.3) ...and most errors at 2B with 4.

Well, great.  But he has to get on the field.  Hence my DeRosa reference. I know who he is.

Agree with Lex. Hate stats. Only one that matters is W's. MLB is getting like the NBA where individuals tower over teams. Baseball is pushing the boomers to impress American youth. Team play is fading.

LaStella looks good on Baseball Reference. So far he has made no impact.

Their first 16 games post break 3 at ST.L. 4 at LA. Then 9 at home - Pirates, Dodgers, Houston. 1-2 start. If they can win 3 or 4 of the seven vs Dodgers and go 8-8 or 9-7 in this stretch they will be fine. Watch out for 3-13.

Dodgers won’t have Kershaw for either series. Bauer out through at least July 27. But I expect that to be extended.

If they go 7 games without pushing Muncy off the plate …..

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 07-19-2021

If nobody on base just hold up four fingers for Muncy. They did it for Bonds. F*** the Dodgers.

Wow.  Tough crowd here….

To date, SF has won 63% of their games (best in majors).  They had to be doing something right to achieve that record.  Good pitching, good defense and the three run homer (RIP, Earl Weaver….).  That is the modern day formula for success (Weaver was just ahead of his time).

Obtain more pitching and get Posey, Longo, Belt and LaStella back on the field - that is all that is needed…

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - BobK - 07-19-2021

Dickerson hoped to score when Slater's ball fell, but it didn't.
Flores took one inside at the kness, last one outside at the knees. Both could have been balls. Agree that that close with two strikes swing.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 07-19-2021

Disagree Giants. Right now Dickerson and especially Tauchman underperforming (Tauchman not at all). Home runs are great but when you are in a close game situational hitting can win a game. The Giants get a D-. I guess they don't teach contact in an age of swing for the fences with an uppercut. I get that Kepler is a pure lefty/righty guy but Ruf has been hot and should have stayed in the game.

This is like Lefevbre's (sp?) French Revolution theory that it was a movement of rising expectations. So now fans have rising expectations and thus the demand for pragmatism at the plate from some of us.

Can’t do that.  Turner is as good a hitter as he is.  How bout knocking him off the plate? Make him a little less comfortable.  Heck, the Wade was pitched tight 4 times. Twice at his feet.

How about this. Great win last night.
Estrada with a big hit.
Almost 4 hour game but then lots of pitching changes

It’s not mutually exclusive.  Or it shouldn’t be.  There are times when making contact is more important than readying to launch.

Good to see Slater drive two balls to RF.  He’s at his best when he’s going the other way.

I think the real problem is that most of the players in major league baseball these days just aren't very good. Teams are looking for a winning formula that they can apply using "average" players. Most of the players don't have the skill set to enable situational hitting. They have been trained to do one thing, and that is it. Large organizations seem to prefer predictability over ability. Everybody becomes interchangeable. That way, identifying prospects and making player selections is much easier. The up side is limited, but so is the down side. Baseball has become totally corporate.

The problem with this model is that eventually it turns off the fans base. Baseball becomes "boring" and nobody watches it on TV, let alone going to the park. Right now, the leagues are trying to create some "star power", but it isn't going so well. It is hard to sell a bland product as entertainment. Hopefully this will eventually lead to some team having success by actually having good players who can hit both for power and average, and a manager who will hit and run.  Not going to happen soon I'm afraid.

While the majors flounder in power hitting they need to get to the bottom of the soft tissue issue. Armchair experts blame Covid and its ramifications. Maybe so but the teams have been hit hard and shouldn't happen again.

And it all started with . . . a sacrifice fly with bases juiced and one out!  How about that . . . a SF??

Agree that Estrada's double down the line was the big hit, and Slater's double after that the icing on the cake.

Great W.  Need to get another one in this series.

What is the "soft tissue issue"?  I can think of things, but they are not suitable for a family board.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - BostonCard - 07-20-2021

Giants had 7 hits tonight, of which four were home runs, responsible for all six of their runs, so I guess it’s fitting that they would lose on a three run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

Ooooofta. Should have kept Sherfy instead of Brebia. Tauchman with another 3 strikeouts. Just a bad night for Rogers. Too bad.

When you don't have a closer - certainly not a lights out one - as is true with the Giants, then you go with the hot pitcher (if there is one).  Garcia has been great lately and did very well again last night.  If you're worried about extending him . . . I guess I get that (and he was PH for, which is a separate decision/reason to remove).  BUT, McKee pitched the 8th - 1, 2, 3 on 6 freaking pitches.  Why not let him go back out for the ninth?  [He wasn't PH for in T9].  And then I heard on post-game that Casali relayed that Rogers was off a bit in the bully warming up . . . and yet they still trot Rogers out there?  It's those kind of dumbass decisions - ones where you go knee-jerk formula instead of watching the game and letting what your eyes tell you to help make decisions - that drive me crazy as a fan (same thing with pulling Ruf the other night after a BB and a dinger because of the formulaic need for righty-lefty matchup).

One other thing:  Dodgers get runner on second with 0 outs and (a) advance him to third on deep fly, and then (b) get him home with grounder up the middle (that only went for a hit because Giants had infield in).  Giants get runner on 2nd with 0 outs and don't even advance him.  (Or not until there are two outs).

Up 6-1 in fifth; lose 8-6 on a zero-out, 3-run dinger in the ninth.  Ouch!  That one stings.

P.S. Anyone else think Tauchman could have/should have caught Taylor's first double? It hit at base of CF wall . . .

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 07-21-2021

Susan Slusser today: “As soon as somebody comes off the IL Tauchman is gone.”

I thought he should have at least tried for it.  He'll be cut soon, the Tauchman era, his 15 minutes of fame are at the 14:55 mark.

Good game last night, Yaz has 4 HRs since the all star break, Flores another nice HR, and Webb is looking really strong.

Giants are first to 60 wins, best record in MLB, 2 game lead over the Dodgers with whom they have already won two of four games on the road with the last game tonight at 7:10. SFG is 4th in MLB in OPS, 2nd in ERA.

Feels pretty darned good.
