Both Baltimore and Miami are also starting rookie QBs, so at least he won't be alone!

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 01-13-2023

"A rookie QB has never taken a team to a Super Bowl" is a fact. It is not a rule of nature that a rookie NFL QB can't do so.

Brock Purdy is not the type to be overwhelmed by whatever people call "pressure." He couldn't have possibly done what he has as a rookie NFL QB if he was. The playoffs may be more intense, but it's not like the defenses he has faced to date weren't throwing everything they had at him, and he's all of a sudden not going to be able to deal with what he sees in the playoffs. In fact, this is what he has demonstrated that most rookies struggle with - he sees things very well, trusts his eyes (based on a lot of experience), and makes sound, decisive decisions. Add to this his ability to maneuver to avoid pressure, find throwing lanes and open receivers, then deliver balls with accuracy, and you have, well, a very good QB, regardless of how much NFL experience he has. Nothing demonstrates his mental acuity more than the fact George Kittle had 7 TD catches in 6 games with Purdy and 4 in 10 games with Garoppolo.

Purdy won on the road at Seattle to clinch the division. He led the Niners from 10 points down to beat the Raiders in the second half on the road. He has otherwise been so efficient, the other games he has played in haven't been close. His team is averaging 33.5 PPG with him at QB.

Purdy has the aforementioned highest passer rating in the NFL since he replaced Garoppolo, but that doesn't happen in a vacuum. Name a rookie NFL QB who has had a better situation to be in than Brock Purdy. He has arguably the most talented roster in the NFL around him, and almost certainly the most talent any starting rookie QB has ever had around him. He has one of the great offensive minds and play callers guiding him. And then, he himself has been forged with experience, work ethic, level of focus and maturity uncommon for NFL rookies, let alone QBs.

So ya, Purdy is a rookie NFL QB. He also isn't.

“One of the great offensive minds and play callers guiding him.”  Did McDaniel come back?  I thought he was the true brains behind Shanahan.

Playoffs are a different animal.  I suspect Purdy will do fine. Although it’s going to be a mess Saturday.  We will soon see…..

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Mick - 01-13-2023

I suspect Brock Purdy, after 46 gams at Iowa State, has played a fair number of games in inclement weather. Shanahan said Wednesday's practice was rainy and Brock did very well. His oblique was hurting AND he had a rib injury when they beat Seattle AT Seattle. When they played Seattle in Santa Clara, it was a very nice 27-7 win.

I guess that gives him a leg up. . . .

112-0.  Non-rookie QB’s v. rookie QB’s starting in the Super Bowl.

No one here is saying Purdy won’t lead SF to the Super Bowl.  However, the odds are against it happening this year.  He does appear to be a different kinda guy but the playoffs are a very difficult environment.  Even dominant regular season “champions” are vulnerable to a single misplay under the unrelenting pressure of the playoffs.  I am hopeful SF can beat Seattle; however, until Purdy leads the 49ers to a playoff win, he hasn’t.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Nan3cy - 01-13-2023

Thinking about what it will probably be like at the game tomorrow, I just remembered Big Game in 1966 in Berkeley when it poured the entire game (well, the entire day) and at the end of the game the players (I think both teams, but for sure our guys) were using the lake in mid-field as an enormous slip-n-slide. The good guys won, so it was worth the discomfort. I think.

If you really look at it, the odds are against any team making it to and winning the Super Bowl, given that there are 14 teams (previously 12) and only one can win, so you can probably find major odds against any stat.  Hell, non-rookie QBs also have crap odds given that only one can win a year which means around 10 or 11 or so won't; not 0% odds, mind you, but low enough that you could present it as bad odds.

I’m guessing that’s the record in playoffs?  There have not been 112 super bowls.

No.

56 SB’s x 2 teams.

The stat is: no Super Bowl participant has ever started a rookie QB in the game.

Ok, sorry, I interpreted it as the head-to-head record between non-rookie and rookie QB’s.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Mick - 01-13-2023

quarterbacks, by and large, tend towards the older side in the Super Bowl. In only 11 Super Bowls have both QBs been in their 20s.  A few years ago, it was Garoppolo (28) and Mahomes (24), which was, collectively, the third youngest duo.

The youngest? Marino (23) vs. Montana (28) in Super Bowl XIX. Marino was a second year quarterback, this was Montana's second Super Bowl.

Quite frankly, BC, upon a rereading of my post, you did a better job of interpretation than I did of detailing the data.

20- 17 Seattle.  Just a hunch.

Lol at this McCaffrey interview.

Of course, his mom will remind everyone that McCaffrey is a dropout.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - lex24 - 01-14-2023

Purdy ran a 4.84 40 at combine/pro day.  Slow.

BUT he also ran a very quick 10 yards.  Which makes sense.  He has terrific feet and has shown quickness.  Ability to  extend.  Which is more important than how fast a QB can run 40….

My biggest concern, especially on a day like today is hanging a throw.  Particularly outside the numbers.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Giants - 01-14-2023

Page 1 of this thread is a fun read, particularly the comments about Purdy.  More than anything the posts summarize why sports are so much fun to follow. You never know……

Meanwhile, how do I delete my remarks about Purdy (and later, in another post, about McCaffrey)?   :)

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Mick - 01-14-2023

I'll go with 27-14 Niners.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - lex24 - 01-14-2023

Remember the play vs Arizona in the RZ when both Mitchell and CMac were both in?  Gun.  Michell lone. Setback. CMac in slot left, comes in motion left to right, giving impression of possible jet sweep. Counter instead to Mitchell who hits hole inside left tackle.  Scores.

I raise this cause I think we may see Mitchell and CMac in game together for several snaps.  Shanahan is brilliant at creating in the run game. Seattle has a poor run defense.  Niners need to run on a sloppy field in the rain to win.

I hope you are right. They should win.  But I have Carroll fear…..l

Levi's has adequate drainage. Not known for mud like Candlestick. Geno Smith can throw long but it's problematic in the rain. Carroll has to solve the McCaffrey quandary to win. Tough chance. Niners by 10.
