As for next year, I like our chances of hitting the ball well. Pitching? A massive question mark IMHO.

Well, that's the end of the year for Stanford sports. The fifth-place finish won't get us any closer to a Directors' Cup as we know. Any chance we're still in the running for the men's Capital One Cup?

Stanford has suffered some soul-crushing defeats in Omaha. But that one is hard to top for sheer heart pulled out of your body and stomped on kind of experience.
Two outs, nobody on base, 1-2 count in bottom of 9th with your ACE on the mound protecting a 1-run lead having retired every batter he had faced to that point. Then..
- Walk
- Seeing eye grounder in hole at short and errant throw to put runners on 1st and 3rd
- Base hit to tie game and get winning run to 3rd
- Wild pitch 5 feet over head of Catcher to score winning run from 3rd
Don't know if it gets worse than that.

Interesting. The reaction to this game reveals a lot about the age of many CardBoarders. It’s certainly a crushing outcome, but I think a good case can be made that 2000 was worse…

Honestly, I'll take this ending over the one we were treated to in 2003 against Rice (my first year as a fan of Stanford sports). I was in the Treehouse with some other Cardinal fans and a good lunch, all ready to be presented with a great game. Nope. We walk in the first 4 runs, and I still haven't forgotten the sight of the girl across the room shaking her head while looking up at the TV.
When it got to 8-0 I stomped out of the room in a huff (no pun intended). There's no glory in being out of the game from the beginning. Much better to go toe to toe with a great opponent even if it means sharper pain.
That said, if we're ranking Omaha endings, I'd rather have the way we lost to Georgia in 2008. Can't speak firsthand about the titles, I was in elementary school in southern California.

Such a brutal finish to a great season. I had my doubts about whether Esquer could lead us back to Omaha. Not any more.
