Not to be.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-06-2023

Got it.

We graduate five, including two "starters", Ekstrom and Kriz.
(I think Kriz has a COVID year available, doesn't seem to be taking it.  She was coached in club by Ashley Ivy Swift.)

Incoming class of six, including four who are six-feet or taller.

ETA:  Two corrections:
First, I hear Maddie Kriz is in the transfer portal.   So I guess she is going to use her covid year, just not at Stanford.

Second, I was confusing some of  the incoming classes for the next two years.
We do have five enrolling in 2023, including three who are six-feet or taller.

We have four more listed for 2024, including 6'3" and 6'4" SAs.

Bob - I was specifically thinking of NCAA championship competitions where men's and women's soccer both lost to lower seeded teams in the 2nd round on PKs, WBB lost in the 2nd round to a lower seeded team, women's volleyball lost to a lower seeded team in the regional final, men's cross country underperformed at the NCAAs. All disappointing results.

USC beat TCU 3-2; UCLA beat FSU 3-0.  So another UCLA vs. USC championship match.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-09-2023

Stanford finishes the season ranked #8 in the AVCA poll.

Mark Rigney is a professional photographer who covers volleyball.

He just posted a group of photos of Stanford players at Gulf Shores.

Beach recruit Ruby Sorra represented Canada at a NORCECA event in Cuba.  Teamed with Lea Monkhouse, they were seeded 7th and took 4th.
American teams took gold and bronze for the women (and silver for the men).

Sorra and Monkhouse are also entered in a NORCECA next week in the Cayman Islands.

UCLA head coach Stein Metzger was hired by Texas.  Rumor has it money was the reason.  Maybe Metzger didn't want to wait around until UCLA got into the B1G conference to get a raise.

This has been rumored, but I can't find an official announcement.

It seems Texas is going all out ($$$$) for the Director's Cup - few sports, but pay to get very high results.

Not as big a move, but Brad Keenan is stepping down as head coach at ASU.

The hiring of Metzger by Texas was posted on several vb blogs.  The rumors were about his motivation to uproot his family from SoCal.  He lives in Redondo Beach with his wife and two kids.  If you're a beach person that's about as nice a place as it gets.  He played for UCLA indoors back in the day so a UCLA guy.  He continues to get the very best beach players.  It sure seems like the Longhorns flashed some big bucks at him.

If UCLA beach stays in the PAC-12 or goes independent does the beach program share in future B1G TV revenue with the other UCLA sports?  Right now UCLA athletics is in hard times financially.

The Volleyball Magazine article says he told the UCLA team last week, so I guess it's no surprise this was not a secret.

Apparently he was making around $140,000 at UCLA, and supposedly Texas said they could go as high as tripling the salary for a top-notch coach.

Interesting question about the UCLA finances.  Would seem pretty strange if the beach program didn't get a cut of the B1G money.  I guess the other side is that beach doesn't generate any revenue for the B1G.

Per Transparent California, Metzger's 2021 pay was $137k. https://transparentcalifornia.com/salaries/2021/university-of-california/stein-metzger/

Compared to the amount of money spent on football and basketball coaches, tripling that salary would be a drop in the bucket.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-18-2023

Hodel and Ekstrom each played (separately) in the AVP Huntington Beach qualifier today.
Ekstrom won her first match (with defender Madison Shields from Pepperdine), but lost her second.

Hodel made it through two rounds, but lost in the third (final) round.  She played with Allie Wheeler (out of USC), an AVP regular who won one event last year (a second tier event).

Ruby Sorra (with Lea Monkhouse) begins pol play tomorrow in the Cayman Islands on the NORCECA BVB tour.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-20-2023

Sorra & Monkhouse went 2-0 in their pool yesterday.
They play again at 8:15am PDT (vs. a team from Nicaragua), and should be on this live stream:

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-20-2023

Sorra & Monkhouse finished pool play 4-0, in what looked like a pretty weak pool.
The later rounds should be more competitive.
They play a quarterfinal at 1:30pm PDT today.
