I like that we’re trying to “prime the pump” for inbound transfers, but objectively it is difficult to project Bank as a starter. Last year, there were two All-Ivy 1st team DLs from Harvard. One went to Notre Dame and the other went to UCLA. Both ended up starting. In this case, Bank may be a solid player and a great student, but the jump from the middle of the pack in the Ivy League is substantial. Maybe he has upside.
In any case, let’s put some points on the inbound transfer board. I hope he commits and suspect he will. We are the last Pac-12 team not to have an inbound transfer commitment for 2023.

Four dimensional analysis on Staples:
Services: 247 composite #1075 (#100 Edge), On3 consensus #1012 (#82 Edge), 247 #81 Edge, On3 #131 Edge, Rivals NR (if he ends up getting assigned a 5.4 by default for signing with a Power Five team that would be the same grade as Matt Rose, Patrick Skov, Chike Amajoyi), ESPN NR
Offers: Stanford, Arizona State, Oregon State, San Jose State, Utah, Washington State
Production: To my chagrin, there are absolutely zero Maxpreps stats reported for Oakland Tech football. News articles indicate he played both ways as there are reports of touchdown catches in addition to sacks (supposedly five against Castlemont, though they weren't all on his game highlight) and at least one interception. The Maxpreps schedule rating is as low as it gets, bottom one percent of recruits in prior Shaw classes, so I put no stock in local honors, but for what it's worth the official site reports Staples was Oakland Athletic League co-MVP in 2019, Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2021, and first team all-conference in 2022 (2020 a pandemic year). Staples is also an accomplished basketball player, having played five years for the famous Oakland Rebels AAU team. For Oakland Tech as a junior, he had 12.8 points per game (second on the team), 8.9 rebounds per game (more than double the next closest!), 1.6 assists per game (fourth), 1.3 steals per game (fourth), and 0.3 blocks per game (fourth). He had seven of the team's eight double doubles (a double double every third game) and made 59 percent of his shots (best on the team), 31 percent of his three pointers (fourth but shot less than one per game, the eighth most attempts on the team), and 58 percent of his free throws (eighth). All this for the #63 basketball team in California. As a senior, stats are reported for him for only one game so far, which at first I thought was because the basketball season started four days after the football season ended so he skipped the first week, but when I dig in the stats for his teammates include games since the one where Staples has stats reported. Not sure whether the story is injury, incomplete stats, or a one game only cameo as he prepares to enroll early (?) at Stanford. In any case, his one game reported was nice - 13 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals. An online profile (difficult to verify/know where the data comes from) claims a 4.6 second 40, 4.467 second 5-10-5 shuttle, 245 pound bench press, 365 pound squat, 23.6 inch vertical, 7.7 second 3 cone, and 100.25 broad jump. Others may read those numbers differently but they strike me as moderately quick and not explosive.
Highlights: The sophomore stats show him on offense, defense, and punting (two long punts, albeit with not much hang time). On offense it's a mix of receiving and running (fair amount of sweeps but they also got the ball in his hand on pass routes. On defense he's playing edge and there's more of him setting the edge than rushing the passer, though there is a sack in addition to a few tackles for loss. The junior highlights showed a bit more defense than offense and the offense highlights selected for that year focused heavily on his blocking. On defense there was a forced fumble, sack, and several tackles for loss, again showing more of him moving laterally along the line of scrimmage/chasing down run plays than rushing the passer. He threw in two kickoffs for good measure, one of which he kicked off and also tackled the returner. He only had two opportunities to play even modestly notable prospects and there's not much to report from either game. In the Fremont game, the one head-to-head highlight against New Mexico safety Kalen Woods was a play from the five yard line on which Woods took the snap as a wildcat, ran toward Staples' side, Staples got blocked by the right tackle for a second or so and by the time Staples could shed the blocker it was too late to prevent Woods from beating him to the end zone. In the McClymonds games, I couldn't find anything notable head-to-head against Cal RB signee Jaivian Thomas. Full season senior stats aren't yet posted. Against Tennyson as a senior, I didn't notice anything notable head-to-head of Staples against 4-star Washington athlete commit Taeshaun Lyons other than that the runs on Lyons' highlights tended to go to the other side from which Staples was lined up, which could be meaningful or not.
Another end of cycle Plan C filler. We have the space and a dire roster that needs credible bodies so why not? On the other hand, the one place where Stanford's roster is far from dire is edge. We've got one of the better edge pipelines in the nation with Bailey, Cooper, Keneley, Tafiti, and Geweniger (including him because we announced him as an edge, though DL seems equally likely to me as he's plausible as either a 5 technique or a 3 technique), not to mention Armitage and Aybar as former 4-stars we shouldn't give up on yet. It's a crowded situation for Staples to distinguish himself, and there isn't a lot to go on to think he'd be able to beat out any of those guys. What gives some hope as a sleeper are the respectable offers for somebody not in the top 1000. On the other hand, Staples isn't a late bloomer: his sophomore and junior highlights and production are just as notable as his senior year. If he's a sleeper it's because services and colleges never quite cottoned on to him. I do wonder about his projection as an edge and whether he might have utility as a linebacker. Our linebacker situation is as dire as it gets and pretty much anybody with a pulse should make our two deep. I'd wonder if Staples could help inside at all. Especially with Tre Williams' high school usage and preferences being even more edge/pass rush focused than Staples (and thus the possibility that the lone ILB recruit in our class may actually be more of a SAM prospect for us), I'd hope the coaches see a possible fit inside for Staples.

Thanks for the deep dive. I agree that while not plan A, he is a Power 5 level guy from his offers and in the current environment of transfers we need bodies and to fill our classes.
Edge is a good spot to have an abundance as they are usually big and athletic with skills that translate. With a bit more weight they can bump inside, or a bit less to move to LB or TE.

Saw some analysis of Williams-Thomas as he signed with Tennessee last December. The guy definitely has the quick twitch ability so rarely found in Stanford skill players. Can't imagine how great Troy Taylor must feel landing a physical talent like this as Stanford's Football's first undergrad mid-year transfer ever.
I'm going out on a limb and saying he will be Stanford's starting RB against Hawaii on Sept 1, 2023. Yes, E.J. Smith is a talent, but I question if he will be fully recovered and ready to start by that time, and believe JWT will supplant Filkins, in part because he is a guy Taylor brought to Stanford as kind of a watershed transfer, based on the Stanford press release.
Now, diving deep in this transfer, did he have the grades and test scores to be admitted as a Frosh? Or does the fact he made the Dean's List at Tennessee supplant him not having the grades and scores out of high school? Or maybe the SAT/ACT waiver due to Covid made transferring easier?

Smith and Filkins will still be RB1 and RB2. I'm excited to see what they can do in an offensive system that doesn't actively suck.
Arlen Harris, in the same class as Williams-Thomas, was our first commit of the entire class and we stopped looking at RBs because we had our guy. Williams-Thomas had a 4.3 GPA in high school but was a very late bloomer.

Smith and Filkins will have to stay healthy, and that is something that may or may not have a lot to do with the offensive system we run. To a first approximation, running 10-15 more plays per game will give them about 20% more opportunities to get injured during the game, but beyond that, lots of factors, a big one of which is “luck” that goes into injuries.

I hope the new staff ends the “we had our guy” approach to recruiting. With the transfer portal and other changes to the landscape, it’s more important than ever to recruit the best talent available. There’s enough room to do that and still reasonably address every position group.
